Despite the development of safety measures and improvements in preventive systems technologies, maritime traffic accidents that involve ships carrying hazardous and noxious substances (HNS) continuously occur owing to increased amount of HNS goods transported and the growing number of HNS fleet. To prevent maritime traffic accidents involving ships carrying HNS, this study proposes an intuitive route risk assessment technique using risk contours that can be visually and quantitatively analyzed. The proposed technique offers continuous information based on quantified values. It determines and structures route risk factors classified as absolute danger, absolute factors, and influential factors within the assessment area. The route risk is assessed in accordance with the proposed algorithmic procedures by means of contour maps overlaid on electronic charts for visualization. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed route risk assessment technique, experimental case studies under various conditions were conducted to compare results obtained by the proposed technique to actual route plans used by five representative companies operating the model ship carrying HNS. This technique is beneficial not only for assessing the route risk of ships carrying HNS, but also for identifying better route options such as recommended routes and enhancing navigation safety. Furthermore, this technique can be used to develop optimized route plans for current maritime conditions in addition to future autonomous navigation application.

Information representing the thickness of the original lines from the thinning results can be used efficiently in order to implement the automated vectorizing system. This paper proposes a preprocessing scheme of thinning which can show the information of the original lines' thickness from the thinning result. In the proposed scheme, the depth of each pixel constructing the lines was calculated, which was represented by the number of layers composed of neighboring pixels surrounding the original pixel. And then the original lines' thickness could be recognized through the depth information of the skeleton from the thinning results. We implemented the proposed scheme and experimented on a contour map. Using the depth information of the skeleton, we could easily distinguish each line of the contour either an intermediate or an index contour.

Cokriging was applied for the estimation of the water levels of the basal leachate and the surrounding groundwater at the Nanjido waste landfill area. When the groundwater level is estimated at the high relief area, it makes a good result to use the data of groundwater level and elevation simultaneously because groundwater level is correlated with topography. This study determined the best semivariogram model of 87 groundwater levels and 144 elevations through cross validation test, and produced the contour maps of groundwater levels using ordinary kriging and universal kiging. Two contour maps don't make big difference at the waste site because this area has a large number of groundwater level data. However, they show big difference at the upper left part of the study area because this area has high relief and a small number of sample data. Their difference is also found at the south area near the Han river. When the topography is considered for the both areas, the contour map of cokriging is thought to be closer to the real groundwater distribution than that of kriging.

Rapid advances in technology and changes in human and cultural activities bring about changes to the earth surface in terms of spatial extension as well as time frame of the changes. Such advances introduce shorter updating frequency of maps and geospatial database. To satisfy these requirements, recent research efforts in the geoinformatics field have been focused on the automation and speeding up of the mapping processes which resulted in products such as the digital photogrammetric workstation, GPSIINS, applications of satellite imagery, automatic feature extraction and the LiDAR system. The possibility of automatically extracting buildings and generating contours from airborne LiDAR data has received much attention because LiDAR data produce promising results. However, compared with the manually derived building footprints using traditional photogrammetric process, more investigation and analysis need to be carried out in terms of accuracy and efficiency. On the other hand, generation of the contours with LiDAR data is more efficient and economical in terms of the quality and accuracy. In this study, the effects of various conditions of the pre-processing phase and the subsequent building extraction and contour generation phases for digital mapping have on the accuracy were investigated.

This research is on the methodology of flood risk assessment using flooding characteristic values. Necessity of design magnitude for flood control considering floods was judged by plotting peak flow with respect to frequency and duration, and flooding magnitude was defined with 6 flooding characteristic values which were proposed to be significant factors when assessing flooding magnitude. Precipitation data used in the assessment modeling were applied by combining all the possible precipitation events. After overlapping the simulated results with precipitation matrix by flooding characteristic values, contour map was drawn, and Flooding characteristic contour graph for possible rainfall events were suggested in respect of all possible precipitation. Flooding characteristic contour graph for possible rainfall events was confirmed that reducing of damage magnitude of each flood characteristic value was figured out easily. The flood risk assessment methods suggested in this study would be a good reference for urban drainage system design, which only focuses on pipe conduit.

The digital working environment and its related technology have been rapidly expanding. In the surveying field, we have changed from using optical film cameras and plotters to digital cameras, multi sensors like GPS/INS etc,. The old analog work flow is replaced by a new digital work flow. Accurate data of the land is used in various fields, efficient utilization and management of land, urban planning, disaster and environment management. It is important because it is an essential infrastructure. For this study, LiDAR surveying was used to get points clouds in the study area. It has a high vegetation penetrating advantage and we used a digital process from planning to the final products. Contour lines were made from LiDAR data and compared with national digital base maps (scale 1/1,000 and 1/5,000). As a result, the accuracy and the economical efficiency were evaluated. The accuracy of LiDAR contour data was average $0.089m{\pm}0.062\;m$ and showed high ground detail in complex areas. Compared with 1/1,000 scale contour line production when surveying an area over $100\;km^2$, approximately 48% of the cost was reduced. Therefore we prepose LiDAR surveying as an alternative to modify and update national base maps.

The purpose of map generalization is a method of map making to transmit the concise cartographic representation and geographic meaning. New generalization algorithm has been developed to be applied in the digital environments by the development of computer cartography. This study aims to look into possibilities of the multiscale mapping by generalization in application with the coordinate transformation and LoD(level of detail) in the web cartography. A method of the coordinate transformation is to improve a transmission of spatial data. Lod is a method which is making web map with selection spatial data by zoom level of users. Layers for test constructed contour line, stream network, the name of a place, a summit of mountain, and administrative office. The generalization was applied to zoom levels by scale for the linear and polygonal features using XML-Based scalable vector graphics(SVG). Resultantly, storage capacity of data was minimized 41% from 9.76mb to 4.08mb in SVG. Generalization of LoD was applied to map elements by stages of the zoom level. In the first stages of zoom level, the main name of places and administrative office, higher order of stream channels, main summit of mountain was represented, and become increase numbers of map elements in the higher levels. Results of this study can help to improve esthetic map and data minimization in web cartography, and also need to make an efforts to research an algorithm on the map generalization over the web.

The rapid growth of aerial survey and remote sensing technology has enabled the rapid acquisition of very large amounts of geographic data, which should be analyzed using real-time visualization technology. The level of detail(LOD) algorithm is one of the most important elements for realizing real-time visualization. We chose the triangulated irregular network (TIN) method to generate normalized digital elevation model(DEM) data. First, we generated TIN data using contour lines obtained from a two-dimensional(2D) digital map and created a 2D grid array fitting the size of the area. Then, we generated normalized DEM data by calculating the intersection points between the TIN data and the points on the 2D grid array. We used constrained Delaunay triangulation(CDT) and ray-triangle intersection algorithms to calculate the intersection points between the TIN data and the points on the 2D grid array in each step. In addition, we simulated a three-dimensional(3D) terrain model based on normalized DEM data with real-time visualization using a Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 program in the DirectX API library and a quad-tree LOD algorithm.

Recently, people are getting more interested in green energy resource and environment friendly energy resource due to the lack of energy and global warming. This study produced a solar energy resource map using LiDAR(Light Detection And Ranging) data to check if it is utilized for spatial information technology and solar energy sectors that people pay more attentions to as new recycling energy. This study assigned Ulleungdo(Island) located in Gyeongsangbuk-do as a target area. This study created the contour line with 1 meter by newly photographing LiDAR and data processing. And using this contour line, this study built DEM(Digital Elevation Model) data with 1 meter. The incidence range depending on the altitude and azimuth of sun using DEM data is used to evaluate solar energy resource. This is expected to suggest an accurate method to evaluate more reliable and more precise information of new recycling energy resource by producing solar energy resource map based on accurate and precise spatial resolution data with 1 meter level.

Historical maps are precious materials, which show spatial distribution of land use, streets and so on at the time when the maps were produced. In analysis of historical maps, the most practical method is to compare them with the present ones, for instance by overlaying them. However, the low precision, in the geometrical sense, of the historical maps makes the task of comparison very difficult. This drawback brings us the idea to incorporate the historical maps into GIS after rubber-sheet transformation, i.e. geometric correction, of them. It makes comparing and overlaying multiple maps from different time periods. Furthermore, it gives map-scales to the historical maps, which are not in general represented on the old maps, and if we allow ourselves to ignore the changes in terrain from past to present, it will make overlaying of present contour lines on the historical maps. As a result, we can bring the points of view of quantitative consideration and three-dimensional visualization into analyses of historical map. We have addressed incorporating historical maps produced in Edo period (1603-1867) in Japan into our GIS for Tokyo. This article shows the outline of our procedures and some applications, e.g., overlaying different maps from Edo period to present, quantitative analyses of land use in Edo, and visualization of landscape of Edo.
