  • Recently, with continuous developments in the field of materials science, graphene oxide (GO) has emerged as a promising material with excellent electrical, thermal, mechanical, and optical properties, which play important roles in most fields. Researchers have achieved considerable progress with graphene. Chitosan (CS) is a natural polymer that has been studied intensively owing to its specific formation, high chemical resistance, and excellent physical properties. These outstanding properties have led to its universal use in applications such as textile fabrics, tissue engineering, medicine and health, coatings, and paints. By combining the advantages of GO and CS, different types of promising materials can be obtained. This review discusses the preparation of GO-CS fibers, hydrogel and aerogel, and the applications of GO-CS nanocomposites. In addition, directions for future research on graphene material composites are discussed.

  • Efficient Si(100) etching by thermal H atoms at low substrate temperatures has been achieved. Gas-phase etching product $SiH_4$(g) upon H atom bombardment resulting from direct abstraction of $SiH_3$(a) by impinging H atoms was detected with a quadrupole mass spectrometer over the substrate temperature range of 105-408 K Facile depletion of all surface silyl ($SiH_3$) groups the dissociative adsorption product of disilane ($Si_2H_6$) at 105K from Si(100)2$\times$1 by D atoms and continuous regeneration and removal of $SiD_3$(a) were all consumed. These results provide direct evidence for efficient silicon surface etching by thermal hydrogen bombardment at cryogenic temperatures as low as 105K We attribute the high etching efficiency to the formation and stability of $SiH_3$(a) on Si(100) at lowered surface temperatures allowing the $SiH_3$(a) abstraction reaction by additional H atom to produce $SiH_4$((g).

  • Poly(hydroxamic acid) resin beads were prepared and complexed with various metal ions. We used IR spectroscopy to investigate the structure of metal complex. It proved that the products formed by introduction of metal ions gave stable and colored complex. It was found that the resin bead as synthesized would be a good column packing material for continuous extraction. Energy dispersive spectroscopy was use to study the distribution of metal ions in the resin matrix. It could be tentatively concluded that adsorption and diffusion of metal ions in the chelating resins mainly depended on the loading of the resin matrix which indicated interacting sites with metal ions.

  • Interfacil charge approximations and structures at doped semiconductor interfaces were proposed. Rectifying phenomena at the III-V compound semiconductor (p-GaP, p-InP, n-GaAs)/$CsNO_3$ aqueous electrolyte interfaces were qualitatively analyzed in terms of their cyclic current-voltage characteristics. The current-voltage characteristic curves, the ion adsorption and potential barrier processes at the semiconductor interfaces were verified using continuous cyclic voltammetric methods. The pn or np junction structures and the related rectifying types at the doped semi-condudtor-electrolyte inferfaces are determined by the space charges.

  • There are growing needs to produce relatively high purity (99.0% or higher) oxygen at low cost. For small scale production, both pressure swing adsorption (PSA) and membrane process are competitve and less expensive or more convient than well known crygenic fractionation technology. A continuous membrane colume (CMC) combined with a PSA oxygen generator can be employed to produce high purity oxygen continuosly. The oxygen-enriched gas generated by a PSA unit, with a concentration of 93-94%, is fed to the CMC that consists of three modules of poly(imide) hollow fibers. Several experiments were conducted by varying parameters, such feed flow rate, transmenbrane pressure drop, stage cut, and feed location in order to obtain a high oxygen concentration above 99.0%. A two-series unit mode was also employed with CMC operation to optimize the given membrane area.

  • The CO molecules adsorbed on Ni(111) surface is studied in the cluster approximation employing EH method with self-consistent charge iteration. The effect of CO coverage is simulated by allowing the variation of valence state ionization potentials of each Ni atom in model cluster according to the self-consistent charge iteration method. The CO coverage dependent C-O stretching frequency shift, adsorption site conversion, and metal work function change are attributed to the charge transfer between metal surface and adsorbate. For CO/Ni(111) system, net charge transfer from Ni surface to chemisorbed CO molecules makes surface Ni atoms be more positive with increasing coverage, and lowers Ni surface valence band. This leads to a weaker interaction between metal surface valence band and Co $2{\pi}^{\ast}$ MO, less charge transfer to a single CO molecule, and the bule shift of C-O stretching frequency. Further increase of coverage induces the conversion of 3-fold site CO to lower coordination site CO as well as the blue shift of C-O stretching frequency. This whole process is accompanied by the continuous increase of metal work function.

  • In the geochemical field, the chemical speciation of hexavalent uranium (U(VI)) has been widely investigated by performing measurements to determine its luminescence properties, namely the excitation, emission, and lifetime. Of these properties, the excitation has been relatively overlooked in most time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS) studies. In this study, TRLFS and continuous-wave excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy are adopted to characterize the excitation properties of U(VI) surface species that interact with amorphous silica. The luminescence spectra of U(VI) measured from a silica suspension and silica sediment showed very similar spectral shapes with similar lifetime values. In contrast, the excitation spectra of U(VI) measured from these samples were significantly different. The results show that distinctive excitation maxima appeared at approximately 220 and 280 nm for the silica suspension and silica sediment, respectively.

  • The ongoing global pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has not only influenced over 1.26 billion people but also caused 2.77 million deaths worldwide (as of March 28, 2021). The vaccination could be the most efficient strategy to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection. However, the continuous emergence of novel variants such as VUI-202012/01 (United Kingdom) and 501.V2 (South Africa) raises huge concerns about the effectiveness of the vaccine designed to target the original virus strain. Since ancient times regardless of the East and West, the plants which refered in this presentation have been consumed not only as food but also as a natural medicine to treat diverse diseases including infectious diseases. Importantly, these plants contain secondary metabolites that display antiviral activity involved in the inhibition of viral adsorption, penetration, and replication. Also, plant-derived natural medicines are expected to have a wider range of efficacy and fewer side effects than synthetic medicine, discovering novel plant-based viral agents would be a promising strategy to fight against SARS-CoV-2.

  • Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) is a promising water management strategy for securing stable water resources to overcome water shortage and water quality deterioration caused by global environmental changes. A MAR demonstration site was selected at Imgok-ri, Sangju-si, Korea, based on screening for the frequency of drought events and local water supply situations. The abundant groundwater discharging from a nearby abandoned coal mine is one of the potential recharge water sources for the MAR implementation. However, it has elevated levels of arsenic (~12 ㎍/L). In this study, the potential of the natural attenuation of arsenic by the field geological media was investigated using batch and column experiments. The adsorption and desorption parameters were obtained for two drill core samples (GM1; 21.8~22.8 m and GM2; 26.0~27.8 m depth) recovered from the potentially water-conducting fracture-zones in the injection well. The effluent arsenic concentrations were monitored during the continuous flow of the mine drainage water through the columns packed with the core samples. GM2 removed about 60% of arsenic in the influent (0.1 mg-As/L) while GM1 removed about 20%. The results suggest that natural attenuation is an acitive process occurring during the MAR operation, potentially lowering the arsenic level in the mine drainage water below the regulatory standard for drinking water. This study hence demonstrates that using the mine drainage water as the recharge water source is a viable option at the MAR demonstration site.

  • Capacitive deionization(CDI) has many advantages over other desalination technologies due to its low energy consumption, less environmental pollution and relative low fouling potential. The objectives of this study are evaluate the performance of CDI which can be used for dissolved salts removal from sewage. To identify ion selectivity of nitrate and phosphate in multiionic solutions and adsorption/desorption performance related to applied potential, a series of laboratory scale experiments were conducted using a CDI unit cell with activated carbon electrodes. The CDI process was able to achieve more than 75 % TDS and $NO_3{^-}$, $NH_4{^+}$ removals, while phosphate removal was 60.8 % and is inversely related in initial TDS and $HCO_3{^-}$ concentration. In continuous operation, increasing the inner cell pressure and reduction of TDS removal ability were investigated which are caused by inorganic scaling and biofouling. However a relative mild cleaning solution(5 % of citric acid for calcium scaling and 500 mg/L of NaOCl for organic fouling) restored the electrochemical adsorption capacity of the CDI unit to its initial level.
