  • Terrain surfaces have to be modeled in very detail and wheel-surface contacting geometry must be well defined in order to obtain proper ground-reaction and friction forces fur realistic simulation of off-road vehicles. Delaunay triangulation is one of the most widely used methods in modeling 3-dimensional terrain surfaces, and the T-search is a relevant algorithm for searching resulting triangular polygons. The T-search method searches polygons in a successive order and may not allow real-time computation of off-road vehicle dynamics if the terrain is modeled with many polygons, depending on the computer performance used in the simulation. The dynamic T-search, which is proposed in this paper, combines conventional T-search and the concept of the dynmaic-window search which uses reduced searching windows or sets of triangular surface polygons at each frame by taking advantage of the information regarding dynamic charactereistics of a simulated vehicle. Numerical tests show improvement of searching speeds by about 5% for randomly distributed triangles. For continuous search following a vehicle path, which occurs in actual vehicle simulation, the searching speed becomes 4 times faster.

  • Skyline queries are an important new search capability for multi-dimensional databases. Most of the previous works have focused on processing skyline queries over static data set. However, most of the real applications deal with the dynamic data set. Since dynamic data set constantly changes as time passes, the continuous skyline computation over dynamic data set becomes ever more complicated. In this paper, we propose a multiple layer grids method for continuous skyline computation (MLGCS) that maintains multiple layer grids to manage the dynamic data set. The proposed method divides the work space into multiple layer grids and creates the skyline influence region in the grid of each layer. In the continuous environment, the continuous skyline queries are only handled when the updating data points are in the skyline influence region of each layer grid. Experiments based on various data distributions show that our proposed method outperforms the existing methods.

  • Many gradient-based mathematical methods have been developed and are in use for structural size optimization problems, in which the cross-sectional areas or sizing variables are usually assumed to be continuous. In most practical structural engineering design problems, however, the design variables are discrete. The main objective of this paper is to propose an efficient optimization method for structures with discrete-sized variables based on the harmony search (HS) meta-heuristic algorithm that is derived using penalty function. The recently developed HS algorithm was conceptualized using the musical process of searching for a perfect state of harmony. It uses a stochastic random search instead of a gradient search so that derivative information is unnecessary. In this paper, a discrete search strategy using the HS algorithm with a static penalty function is presented in detail and its applicability using several standard truss examples is discussed. The numerical results reveal that the HS algorithm with the static penalty function proposed in this study is a powerful search and design optimization technique for structures with discrete-sized members.

Abstract End-user operations on continuous media (say video data) consist of arbitrary-rate search, pause, and others as well as normal-rate play. FF(fast-forward) / FB(fast-backward) among those operations are desirable to find out the scene of interest but they require non-sequential access of disks. When accesses are clustered to several disks without considering load balance, high quality services in playback may not be available. In this paper, we propose a new disk placement scheme, called PRRgp(Prime Round Robin with Grouped Parities), with enhanced reliability by using the wasted disk storage space in an old one(PRR: Prime Round Robin), in which continuous media are placed on a disk array based storage systems to distribute disk accesses uniformly. The PRRgp can not only achieve load balance of disks consisting of a disk array under arbitrary-rate search like PRR, but also improve reliability by storing parity information on the wasted disk space appropriately. We use combinatorial and Markov models to evaluate the reliability for a disk array and to analyze the results. When continuous media like PRR are placed and parity information on the wasted disk space is stored, we cannot tolerate more than two simultaneous faults. But they can be recovered by using stored parity information for about 30 percent as a whole in case of PRRgp presented in this paper. In addition, more than two faults can be tolerated in case there are more than two parity groups.

  • When user wants to find objects which have the nearest position from him, we use the nearest neighbor (NN) query. The GIS applications, such as navigation system and traffic control system, require processing of NN query for moving objects (MOs). MOs have trajectory with changing their position over time. Therefore, we should be able to find NN object continuously changing over the whole query time when process NN query for MOs, as well as moving nearby on trajectory of query. However, none of previous works consider trajectory information between objects. Therefore, we propose a method of continuous NN query for trajectory of MOs. We call this CTNN (continuous trajectory NN) technique. It ran find constantly valid NN object on the whole query time by considering of trajectory information.

  • This paper describes on the Korean continuous speech recognition system for flight reservation. It adopts a frame-synchronous One-Pass DP search algorithm driven by syntactic constraints of context free grammar(CFG). For recognition, 48 phoneme-like units(PLU) were defined and used as basic units for acoustic modeling of Korean. This modeling was conducted using a HMM technique, where each model has 4-states 3-continuous output probability distributions and 3-discrete-duration distributions. Language modeling by CFG was also applied to the task domain of flight reservation, which consisted of 346 words and 422 rewriting rules. In the tests, the sentence recognition rate of 62.6% was obtained after speaker adaptation.

  • Information on movement of objects in videos can be used as an important part in categorizing and separating the contents of a scene. This paper is proposing a shape-based movement-matching algorithm to effectively find the movement of an object in video streams. Information on object movement is extracted from the object boundaries from the input video frames becoming expressed in continuous 2D shape information while individual 2D shape information is converted into a lD shape feature using the shape descriptor. Object movement in video can be found as simply as searching for a word in a text without a separate movement segmentation process using the sequence of the shape descriptor listed according to order. The performance comparison results with the MPEG-7 shape variation descriptor showed that the proposed method can effectively express the movement information of the object and can be applied to movement search and analysis applications.

  • Recently, continuous k-nearest neighbor query(CkNN) which is defined as a query to find the nearest points of interest to all the points on a given path is widely used in the LBS(Location Based Service) and ITS(Intelligent Transportation System) applications. It is necessary to acquire results quickly in the above applications and be applicable to spatial network databases. This paper proposes a new method to search nearest POIs(Point Of Interest) for moving query objects on the spatial networks. The method produces a set of split points and their corresponding k-POIs as results. There is no order between the POIs. The analysis show that the proposed method outperforms the existing methods.

  • We present a novel multi-resolution block matching algorithm (BMA) for fast motion estimation. At the coarsest level, a full search BMA (FSBMA) is performed for searching complex or random motion. Concurrently, spatial correlation of motion vector (MV) field is used for searching continuous motion. Here we present an efficient method for searching full resolution MVs without MV decimation even at the coarsest leve. After the coarsest level search, two or three initial MV candidates are chosen for the next level. At the further levels, the MV candidates are refined within much smaller search areas. Simulation results show that in comparison with FSBMA, the proposed BMA achieves a speed-up factor over 710 with minor PSNR degradation of 0.2dB at most, under a normal MPEG2 coding environment. Furthermore, our scheme is also suitable for hardware implementation due to regular data-flow.
