  • The semantic understanding of numbers requires association with context. However, powerful neural networks overfit spurious correlations between context and numbers in training corpus can lead to the occurrence of contextual bias, which may affect the network's accurate estimation of number magnitude when making inferences in real-world data. To investigate the resilience of current methodologies against contextual bias, we introduce a novel out-of-distribution (OOD) numerical question-answering (QA) dataset that features specific correlations between context and numbers in the training data, which are not present in the OOD test data. We evaluate the robustness of different numerical encoding and decoding methods when confronted with contextual bias on this dataset. Our findings indicate that encoding methods incorporating more detailed digit information exhibit greater resilience against contextual bias. Inspired by this finding, we propose a digit-aware position embedding strategy, and the experimental results demonstrate that this strategy is highly effective in improving the robustness of neural networks against contextual bias.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify factors (biological, psychological, interpersonal, and contextual factors) associated with the weight bias internalization of the Korean girls in early adolescence. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design. Data was collected from 233 girls aged 12~14 years with a self-reported questionnaire. With multiple regression analysis, the factors associated with the weight bias internalization of the girls in early adolescence were analyzed. Results: Of psychosocial factors, fear to fat (anti-fat attitude) (β=.43, p<.001) was associated with the weight bias internalization of the girls in early adolescence. In addition, attachment with teachers (β=-.11, p=.029) of an interpersonal factor and perceived socio-cultural pressure regarding weight control (β=.34, p<.001) of a contextual factor were associated with the weight bias internalization of the girls in early adolescence. Conclusion: For releasing the weight bias internalization of the girls in early adolescence, decreasing anti-fat attitude and socio-cultural pressure regarding weight control should be primarily required through social efforts including community and school based interventions.

  • This paper provides a non-Bayesian method based on the expanded EM algorithm for segmenting the magnetic resonance images degraded by bias field. For the images with the intensity as a pixel value, many segmentation methods often fail to segment it because of the bias field(with low frequency) as well as noise(with high frequency). Our contextual approach is appropriately designed by using normal mixture model incorporated with Markov random field for noise-corrective segmentation and by using the penalized likelihood to estimate bias field for efficient bias filed-correction.

  • Objectives: Clinical improvements can be observed following placebo administrations in clinical trials. Randomized controlled trials have been conducted to disentangle the specific effects of therapeutic interventions over the past decade. In acupuncture trials, non-penetrating placebo needles offer the opportunity to determine the specific effects of needling. Methods: The present review provides an overview of the concept of the placebo effect and the characteristics of the placebo needles. Results: Placebo control can contribute to minimize for bias and the contextual and psychological components of therapeutic interventions. Placebo control should meet two criteria: blinding efficacy (indistinguishable from active treatment) and physiological inertness. In the case of acupuncture, however, it is difficult to meet both criteria simultaneously. The dilemma of placebo needles suggests that placebo needles do not constitute proper control in acupuncture research. Considering the characteristics of placebo needles, patients are more likely to perceive placebo needles as active treatment in acupuncture trials compared to placebo pills in pharmaceutical trials. Placebo response might be observed more frequently to placebo needles than to placebo pills. When acupuncture treatments are utilized in clinical use, placebo effects can be enhanced by exploiting patients' expectations in the contextual or environmental cues that surround medical intervention. Conclusions: We have to consider these unique characteristics of placebo needles in order to avoid drawing premature conclusions that acupuncture itself is just a placebo.

  • The present research inverstigates the nature of contextual effects on pronoun reference resolution during text comprehesion.Through three experiments, this research examines how various contextuall informations influence on reference resolution and interact with syntactic variables. In experiment 1,the local context was controlled by biasing the pronoun-sentence context towards a certain preceding referent. The lexical decision time and the forced choice time for the correct referent were measured. The results showed that the local contexts have clear effect on reference resolution. The effects of syntactic ambiguity were also observed though the local context was biased towards a certain referent noun.In experiment 2,the global context effect was examined by introducing the text-thematic context in a preceding sentence while keeping the following pronoun-sentence context neutral. The results showed that the global thematic context bias towards a subject or object in a preceding sentence entails a faster response time than the thematically neutral context. In experiment 3,another aspects of context effects were inverstigated by manipulating the consistency of the preceding thematic context with the following pronoun-sentence context. The results showed that the lexical decision responses and forced referent choice responses were faster when the prethematic context and the post-anaphoric context match than when they mismatch. In sum,the overall results of three experiments of this research indicates that context has a clear effect on pronoun reference resolution during text comprehension.

  • One of the limitations of BOW method is that each term is recognized only by its form, failing to represent the term's meaning or thematic background. To overcome the limitation, different profiles for each term were defined by thematic categories depending on contextual characteristics. In this study, a specific term was used as a classification feature based on its meaning or thematic background through the process of comparing the context in those profiles with the occurrences in an actual document. The experiment was conducted in three phases; term weighting, ensemble classifier implementation, and feature selection. The classification performance was enhanced in all the phases with the ensemble classifier showing the highest performance score. Also, the outcome showed that the proposed method was effective in reducing the performance bias caused by the total number of learning documents.
