Objective : Yayaoyuanfang(御藥院方) is a prescription book, compiled by Xu Guozhen(許國楨) in 1267. Yayaoyuanfang was published in Chosun dynasty as named as Singan Hyemin Eoyakwonbang. Therefore, we have interests in what are the differences in those two books. Method : We try to analyze two texts' differences by physical bibliography and comparing contents only in DamEum. Result : Those differences are the name, order, matria medica, effects, medicine dose, how to use and medicine processing of prescriptions. Conclusion : There are several differences between Yayaoyuanfang and Singan Hyemin Eoyakwonbang. However, Singan Hyemin Eoyakwonbang is not a full text so far, we need continuous studies on Yayaoyuanfang and Singan Hyemin Eoyakwonbang.
"The Golden Mirror of Medicine(醫宗金鑑)" was compiled by the medical officers of the Cheong(淸) government headed by Ogyeom(吳謙: 1736-1795) in 1742, and was adopted as a textbook by the Institute of Imperial Physicians(太醫院) in 1749. This book provides a good summary of academic contents and clinical experiences from before the Cheong(淸) dynasty, and serves as a convenient and practical guide book. "The Notes of Treatise on Cold-Induced Diseases(傷寒論注)" is one part of "The Golden Mirror of Medicine(醫宗金鑑)", and this is placed at the beginning of the book, indicating its importance. The chapter on taeeum-disease[太陰病篇], which is the third part of "The Notes of the Treatise on Cold-Induced Diseases(傷寒論注)", has not yet been translated into Korean. Therefore, in this study, the characteristics of Ogyeom's(吳謙) notes are inspected through a comparative study of the chapter of taeeum-disease[太陰病篇] based on translation and the notes of famous scholars. The texts first provide an outline of taeeum-disease[太陰病], which is followed by diarrhea, vomiting and therapeutic methods of syndrome involving both the exterior and interior[表裏兼證], as well as abdominal distension and pain. The prognoses are then explained in succession. The eight texts that have been shown in the chapter of taeeum-disease[太陰病篇] of original text were relocated and the seven texts that existed in the chapters of taeyang(太陽), yangmyeong(陽明) and gwol-eum(厥陰) were moved to this chapter. Furthermore, Ogyeom(吳謙) moved the cold-dysphagia[寒格] text from a chapter of gwol-eum-disease[厥陰病] to a chapter of taeeum-disease[太陰病] and explained vomiting due to pathogenic cold. The origins of taeeum-disease[太陰病] are purported to occur through the yang-channel[陽經] to the eum-channel[陰經], and taeeum-disease[太陰病] was reported to include both interior-deficiency-cold-syndrome[裏虛寒證] and interior-excess-heat-syndrome[裏實熱證]. In the case of diarrhea-more-severe-symptoms[自利益甚], he thought it induced by faultpurgation[誤下], and in indication for decoction of cinnamon with peony[桂枝加芍藥湯] and decoction of cinnamon with rhubarb[桂枝加大黃湯], he thought it included the exterior syndrome of taeyang-disease[太陽表證], and rhubarb was used in purgation of taeeum-excess[太陰實].
Objectives : A quantitative analysis on the vocabulary in the English translation version of Donguibogam. Methods : This study quantitatively analyzed the English-translated texts of Donguibogam with the Corpus-based analysis, and compared the quantitative results analyzing the texts of original Donguibogam. Results : As the results from conducting the corpus analysis on the English-translation version of Donguibogam, it was found that the number of total words (Token) was about 1,207,376, and the all types of used words were about 20.495 and the TTR (Type/Token Rate) was 1.69. The accumulation rate reaching to the high-ranking 1000 words was 83.54%, and the accumulation rate reaching to the high-ranking 2000 words was 90.82%. As the words having the high-ranking frequency, the function words like 'the, and of, is' mainly appeared, and for the content words, the words like 'randix, qi, rhizoma and water' were appeared in multi frequencies. As the results from comparing them with the corpus analysis results of original version of Donguibogam, it was found that the TTR was higher in the English translation version than that of original version. The compositions of function words and contents words having high-ranking frequencies were similar between the English translation version and the original version of Donguibogam. The both versions were also similar in that their statements in the parts of 'Remedies' and 'Acupuncture' showed higher composition rate of contents words than the rate of function words. Conclusions : The vocabulary in the English translation version of Donguibogam showed that this book was a book keeping the complete form of sentence and an Korean medical book at the same time. Meanwhile, the English translation version of Donguibogam had some problems like the unification of vocabulary due to several translators, and the incomplete delivery of word's meanings from the Chinese character-culture area to the English-culture area, and these problems are considered as the matters to be considered in a work translating Korean old medical books in English.
Objectives : This study aims to examine the efficacy and application of Cannabis according to its parts. Methods : Contents on efficacy, treatment, and application of Cannabis in Material Medica and other texts of East Asian Medicine were collected and interpreted to deduce each characteristic. Results : Cannabis was found to be applicable to various wind symptoms and wind stroke, various pain and injuries, skin diseases, blockage or leaking of urine or feces, disease related to genitalia and anus, chronic ague, women's disease related to menstruation, birth, pregnancy, and to have the effects of heightening perceptive and sensory organs, detoxification and anesthesia, stimulating hair growth, and eradicating parasites. It drives out wind-heat pathogenic qi, circulates qi and blood, which allowed it to be applied not only to blockages but to symptoms of leakage. In other words, Cannabis was used when both excess and deficiency diseases were present, the former caused by acute blockage and the latter accompanied by stagnation. Conclusions : Based on the findings of this study, future researches on the efficacy and application of Cannabis could be done more systematically. In line with recent trend of wide application of medical Cannabis, we hope for it to be more actively used in the field of East Asian Medicine based on objective evidence.
Objectives : The purpose and application method of the five kinds of Gagamjeong-gisan in the Onbyeongjobyeon were analyzed and their significance was examined. Methods : First, contents within medical texts on the Gwakhyangjeong-gisan, the original formula for the Gagamjeong-gisan were analyzed. Next, application, symptoms and pathogenic mechanism, treatment principle, composition of the Gagamjeong-gisan as written in the Onbyeongjobyeon were analyzed. Characteristics of each formula as deduced from this process were compared and examined. Results : The Gwakhyangjeong-gisan covers both external contraction and internal damage, applied regardless of external or internal symptoms. It restores the Yang qi of the Spleen and Stomach, balancing the Zheng qi to respond to the external qi. The Gagamjeong-gisan takes after the Gwakhyangjeong-gisan, reflecting such properties. However, the latter differs in that it excludes ingredients unfit for treating dampness-warmth, and uses different application methods according to the level of discharge of dampness pathogen. Conclusions : The Gagamjeong-gisan is modified from the Gwakhyangjeong-gisan, which is applied to cold damage and internal damage to better treat warm disease. It can be said to have acted as a bridge for warm disease scholars in composing formulas that deal with dampness-heat disease.
As Lee Heon-gil's books have been handed down in oral tradition and written form, there are several different versions including the one edited by the author. Books known to be his writings include Eulmisinbang, Majinbang contained in Susangsingam, and Majinbang, Majingibang and Majinbibang mentioned in Joseoneukhaksageupjilbyeongsa. Among Lee Heon-gil's books, Eulmisinbang was mentioned first in literature. Its original version is missing, but a large part of it is quoted in Magwahoitong, through which we can see the contents of Eulmisinbang. The meanings of Eulmisinbang are as follows. First, it is the most reliable woodblock-printed version as it was the base of Magwahoitong. Second, quotations in Magwahoitong are so accurate that they demonstrate the original texts of Eulmisinbang and can be used in comparison with other versions. Third, Eulmisinbang has the largest volume of contents among Lee Heon-gil's books. Susangsingam was printed again in the early 1900s by combing Majinbang and Sanbangsurok. Majinbang included in the book had been known to come from China but, through comparison with the original, it was found to be the same as Eulmisinbang. Majinbang is considered to be Eulmisinbang handed down in different name, and shows the original structure of Eulmisinbang. Considering its table of contents and the contents, Majinbang mentioned in Joseoneukhaksageupjilbyeongsa looks the same as Majinbang included in Susangsingam. Majingibang was edited by extracting the quotations of Eulmisinbang in Magwahoitong, and was reprinted in the name of Majinbibang. Through analyzing Lee Heon-gil's books, we found two courses through which his books have been handed down. First, Eulmisinbang was quoted separately according to the new structure of Magwahoitong, and the structure of Magwahoitong had been maintained and reprinted under the titles of Majingibang and Majinbibang. Second, Eulmisinbang had maintained its original structure, handed down in the name of Majinbang, and reprinted under the title of Susangsingam. Based on the findings, we selected the quotations of Eulmisinbang in Magwahoitong and Majinbang included in Susangsingam as texts for studying Lee Heon-gil's medicine for measles. Accordingly, it looks likely to rebuild a new research text based on the two woodblock-printed versions, and it will be a crucial material for studying Lee Heon-gil's medicine for measles.
Objectives : This study focused on how the modem blood vessel is defined in Oriental medicine through literary investigation. Methods : Contents from 35 classical texts representing each era were analyzed for the expression of Hyeolmaek and affiliate information, as well as terms used for the current concept of blood vessel. Results : Following results were obtained through investigating literary information on Hyeolmaek. 1. In the Yellow Emperor's Classic, Hyeolmaek is associated with heart and widely used for physiological, pathological, diagnosis, and treatment purposes. 2. During the Song Dynasty, a term Cheonggeun (靑節). is used to describe the vein in the abdomen. 3. During the Ming Dynasty, terms such as Cheonggeun(靑節) and Cheongmaek(靑脈) were used. 4. The term Hyeolmaek was used inclusively for blood, blood vessels, arteries, veins, and as well as meridians.
Objectives : This paper examined the Buddhist contents within the text, Bencaoshengyabanji(本草乘雅半偈). Methods : Medicinals that were searched through Buddhist vocabulary were examined. Results & Conclusions : Medicinals that quoted the Lengyanjing were related to the Water-Fire interaction, food and medicine, and karma, while those that quoted the Shidian were related to 無上道, 去惡殺蟲, 樞機滑利, and 生生之氣. Those related to the Great Earth of the Four Elements corrected the body's form based on Metal Qi, while those related to the Great Water were connected to the circulation of water dampness. Those related to the Great Fire were deeply related to Yang Qi, and those related to the Great Wind were connected to Wind control. Of the Four Origins, medicinals that were viviparous lowered Qi, while those that were oviparous were related to communicating Shen, treating diseases of the Conception Vessel, and the closing and opening of day and night. Medicinals originating from dampness were related to urination and fluid management, while those of metamorphosis were related to the process of Qi. Those related to emptiness were related to the communication of the Qi system, while those related to 六根六塵 were connected to calming the Shen and strengthening the will, and smoothing the nine orifices. Medicinals related to 圓通 were used for improving eyesight and hearing and controlling the closing and opening. Lu Zhi-yi's analysis of medicinals through the Lengyanjing is original in that it suggested a new perspective other than previous theories on pharmacology which were based on the Yin-Yang and Five Phases and Rising/Lowering/Floating/Sinking theories, but also pedantic and exaggerated. The Bencaoshengyabanji is a unique text on medicinals which analyzed each medicinal under Buddhist influence. However, it also followed the contexts of other previous texts on medicinals, and influenced Zou shu.
Objectives : This paper looks at the history of East Asian acupuncture and moxibustion in the context of the general orientations of craft and art. It is understood that acupuncture and moxibustion was the ultimate integration of reason and craft in which text and experience mutually influenced each other throughout its development. In Joseon, the pursuit of integration between the body and the order of the Heaven and Earth was particularly prominent. Methods : As in the words of Zhunagzi(莊子), the state in which something that deeply touches the mind manifests in the hands has been understood as the ultimate state in modern and ancient art. Starting here, I examined the possibility that Korean acupuncture and art has evolved from such foundations step by step. Major acupuncture and moxibustion texts were examined historically, starting with "Shenyingjing(神應經)", leading to "Junggan-Shenyingjing (重刊神應經)", "Chimgu-Gyeongheombang(鍼灸經驗方)", "Chijongjinam(治腫指南)", "Chijongjinam-Joseonchambon治腫指南朝鮮?本", "Chimgutaegilpyeonjip(鍼灸擇日編集)", "Chimgu-Myeonggam(鍼灸明鑑)". Introductions and main contents of the texts were analyzed and presented appropriately. Results : East Asian acupuncture and moxibustion has developed based on the study of pathways that correspond to Shen, of the accordance and harmony between body and the order of Heaven and Earth together with theoretical refinement, technical development, and acceptance of new discoveries. In the perspective of craft, this was motivated by artistic passions such as '得於心 應於手' and '醫者意也'. In the case of refined acupuncture methods, due to their difficulty in education and transmission there has been some fluctuation. Conclusions : Korea, China, and Japan share a largely similar philosophical and cultural basis. Reason and craft, text and experience mutually influenced each other while the core of refined acupuncture was widely shared. However, a certain bifurcation point could be detected.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to find the differences of the viewpoints about medicine between Korean and Japanese doctors through analysing the contents of the medical conversation records from the visits of Joseontongshinsa. Methods : The conversations were classified according to the topics and analysed with emphasis on the subject of medical classics. Results : Japanese doctors were skeptical about the application of Huangdineijing(黃帝內經) and the theory of Five Circulation and Six Qi(五運六氣) to clinical treatment while they respected Shanghanlun(傷寒論). They were interested in the bibliography of medical classics, and considered it was important to study the original texts rather than the new editions. The doctors of Joseon valued Huangdineijing highly and accepted the theory of Five Circulation and Six Qi. They mainly used the treatments in Yixuezhengzhuan(醫學正傳), Yixuerumen(醫學入門), Shoushibaoyuan(壽世保元) as therapeutic methods. Conclusions : The conversation records reflect the trend of Korean Medicine in the Joseon Dynasty that Huangdineijing had been mainly studied and the Jin-Yuan(金元) Medicine had been accepted, and the trend of Japanese Medicine in the mid-Edo period that Koho school(古方派) had predominated.
