  • Ecological variations of Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi were determined from the soils collected from different sites of the polluted and unpolluted areas related to the soil pollutions. Average 24.5 spores $(per\;20g)^{-1}$ soil of AM fungal spore were counted from the 32 sites of soils collected from On-san (polluted), whereas average 4.1 spores $(per\;20g)^{-1}$ soil from the 18 sites of those from Mt. Kwanak (polluted); Average 23.6 spores $(per\;20g)^{-1}$ soil of AM fungal spore were also counted from the 30 sites of soils collected from Chung-mu (unpolluted), whereas average 15.8 spores $(per\;20g)^{-1}$ soil from the 14 sites of those from Mt. Chungwang (unpolluted). The spores of AM fungi were the species of Glomus, Gigaspora, Acaulospora and Scutellospora. Among the above four genera, the species of Glomus were observed to be more abundant than the other genera in the soils collected from On-san, Chung-mu and Mt. Chungwang whereas the species of Gigaspora in those from Mt. Kwan-ak. The parameters of soils measured showed some variations between the polluted and unpolluted areas; 12.9 to 16.4% in the soil moisture, 5.6 to 8.3% in the organic matter and 4.3 to 5.7 at soil pH (polluted to unpolluted areas, respectively). The soils collected, thereby, appeared to be more strongly acidic and also lower in the contents of soil moisture or organic matter at the polluted area than unpolluted area. Based on the ecological criteria, the species richness or species diversity had significant differences (p<0.05) between polluted and unpolluted area. The spore density of genus Glomus or Gigaspora was significantly different (p<0.05) among the soils of three different plant vegetations (conifer plants, broad leaf plants, and grass plants). Also, there were significant differences (p<0.05) in the species evenness or species diversity among the soils referring to three different plant vegetations. There was a direct relationship $(r^2=0.38)$ between soil moisture and organic matter measured from 94 soil samples. Since there was a direct relationship $(r^2=0.22)$ between organic matter and total spores, it seems to be likely to presume that mycorrhizal spores can be increased in proportion to enhanced organic matters in soils. The species richness or species diversity was inclined to increase in proportion to enhanced soil pH and total spores in soils.

  • This experiment was conducted to acquire the basic data necessary for the artificial pond greening. Eighty four hydrophytes collected from 11 domestic small ponds and a farm were used in this experiment. The size of the artificial pond used was $6m{\times}3m{\times}1.5m(length{\times}width{\times}depth)$. Twelve months after planting, species were selected for their high ornamental values and tissue contents of N and P in each month. Tissue contents of N in Trapha nantan, Nymphoides indica, Nymphaea hybrid, and Murdannia keisak were high. Tissue contents of P in Monochoria vaginalis and Murdannia keisak were also high. The pH of artificial pond stabilized at a 6.8~7.6 range from May 2005 to March 2007. The EC was low in summer and high in autumn. From April to October, 5, 19, 23, 32, 31, 28, and 26 species, respectively, were selected for artificial pond greening. One year after planting, vegetation changed from 78 species (Potamogeton octqandrus, Salvinia natans, Potamogeton malaianus, etc.) to 38 species (Scirpus tarbernaemontani, Scirpus karuizawensis, Scirpus triqueter, etc.). Species diversity in the artificial pond was as follows, indicating it being a stabilized artificial pond; 38 species, 1,437 total number of plants, species richness index of 11.72, and maximum diversity index of 0.97.

  • Korean personal data(information) protection law requires privacy policies post on every website. According to recent survey results, users' interests on these policies are low due to these policies' low readability and accessibility. This study proposes a layout that effectively conveys online privacy policy contents, and assesses its impact on information understandability, vividness, and recognition of users. Studies on privacy policies and layouts, media richness theory, social presence theory, and usability are used to develop the new layered approach. Using experiments, three major layouts are evaluated by randomly selected online users. Research results shows that information understandability, vividness, and recognition of privacy policies in the revised-layered approach are higher than those of in the text-only or table-based layouts. This study implies that employing visual guides like icons on privacy policy layouts may increase users' interest in those policies.

  • Objective: This experiment was conducted to explore the impact of diet on the ruminal microbial community in goats. Methods: Twelve goats were divided into two groups and fed complete feed (CF) or all forage (AF) diet. The total microbial DNAs in the rumen liquid were extracted. The V4 region of microbial 16S rRNA genes was amplified and sequenced using high-throughput. Information of sequences was mainly analyzed by QIIME 1.8.0. Results: The results showed that Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes were the most predominant microbial phyla in the rumen of all goats. At genus level, the abundance of fiber-digesting bacteria such as Ruminococcus and Lachnospiracea incertae sedis was significantly higher in AF than that in CF, while the levels of fat-degrading bacterium Anaerovibrio and protein-degrading bacterium Pseudomonas were opposite. The core shared genera, Prevotella and Butyrivibrio were widespread in the rumen of goats and no significant difference was observed in relative abundance between groups. Conclusion: We concluded that the richness of fiber-, protein-, and fat-digesting bacteria was affected by diet and tended to increase with the rise of their corresponding substrate contents in the ration; some bacteria shared by all goats maintained stable despite the difference in the ration, and they might be essential in maintaining the normal function of rumen.

  • Melon is a fruit consumed and grown globally because of the sweet taste and pleasant aroma. The purpose of this study was to determine the quality characteristics and antioxidant activities of melon jams added with various fruits such as apple, aronia, blueberry, grape, kiwi, passion fruit, and peach. We determined quality characteristics such as pH, total acidity, antioxidant activity, content of total anthocyanin, polyphenol and tannin, respectively. The 100% melon jam as the control was the highest pH and lowest total acidity, whereas mixed jams with melon and passion fruit showed opposite results. The mixed jams with melon and aronia of the total anthocyanin, the polyphenol contents, tannin, and ABTS radical scavenging activities, were markedly higher than those of the control and other samples (p<0.001), followed by the mixed jams with melon and blueberry. In the taste sensing analysis, mixed jams with melon and passion fruit revealed higher richness and lower aftertaste-bitterness and aftertaste-astringency than the commercial strawberry jam and other samples. Thus, jams mixed with various fruits, in particular, aronia, blueberry, and passion fruit were superior to the 100% melon jam in terms of physiological activity and palatability.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the quality of fermented sausages manufactured with processed sulfur-fed pigs. The fermented sausages were divided into two groups; one was manufactured with non sulfur-fed pigs (NP), the other one was made with processed sulfur-fed pigs (SP). No differences were found in moisture and fat contents (p>0.05) between NP and SP, but the protein and ash con-tents of SP were significantly higher than those of NP (p<0.05). The pH of SP was significantly lower than that of NP, and the water activity ($a_w$) of SP was significantly higher than that of NP after 14 and 21 d (p<0.05). The TBA (Thiobarbituric acid reactive substance) w value of SP was significantly lower than that of NP (p<0.05). The lightness and yellowness of NP were significantly higher than those of SP, whereas the redness of NP was lower than SP (p<0.05). The total plate count of SP was lower than that of NP (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in TPA (Texture profile analysis) between the two samples. SP showed significantly increased monounsaturated fatty acid (p<0.05) and decreased saturated fatty acid. Umami taste and richness in SP were significantly higher than in NP (p<0.05). Therefore, it is suggested that processed sulfur fed pigs may play a key role in enhancing the quality of meat products.

  • This study was performed to analyze the improvement of soil physical property and soil biota characteristics through cultivation of green manure crops for a one-year period before creation of a tea plantation as follows. The study revealed that the contents of available phosphate tended to decrease after sod-culture by green manure cultivation and open-pollination, when compared to the level before cultivation. The ratio soil porosity increased by approximately 30% when Crotalaria juncea and Sorghum bicolar L. Moench were cultivated, while the soil bacteria and fungi also increased. In a research on microfauna using a pit fall trap, the population number of the microfauna was 174 of 27 species in the plot of open-pollinated sod-culture and no organic matter application, and 268 of 26 species in the plot of Sorghum bicolar L. Moench. Consequently, the culturing tool of Crotalaria juncea recorded the highest level of species diversity at 2.5, the evenness index at 3.7 and richness at 4.6, with the lowest level of a dominance index. The ecological quotient of microfauna was 0.76 in the plot of Sorghum bicolar L. Moench, and 0.63 in the plot of Crotalaria juncea.

  • Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the physicochemical, sensory and taste characteristics of commercial, frozen, dry, and wet aged Hanwoo sirloin. Methods: Grade 2 sirloin from 6 Hanwoo steers (about 30 months old) were obtained after 5 days postmortem. Samples were assigned to four groups which were commercial beef (CON, control group), frozen beef (Hanwoo frozen, HF; 40 days in $-18^{\circ}C$ freezer), wet-aged beef (Hanwoo wet-aging, HW; 21 days), and dry-aged beef (Hanwoo dry-aging, HD; 40 days). HW and HD were stored in a $80%{\pm}5%$ relative humidity cooler at $1^{\circ}C$. Results: The HF group showed a significantly higher cooking loss and expressible drip with significantly higher pH compared to other groups. In addition, protein and fat contents in the HD group were higher than those in other groups (p<0.05). The shear forces in the HW and HD groups were significantly lower than those in the CON group. The HD group had significantly higher omega-3 and polyunsaturated fatty acids compared with other groups. Glutamic acid levels in the HD group were significantly higher compared with those in other groups. Electronic tongue analysis revealed that sourness of the HD group was lower than that of other groups, whereas the HD group showed significantly higher umami, richness, and saltiness compared to other groups (p<0.05). Sensory test results revealed that the HW group had significantly higher tenderness, while the HD group had significantly higher chewiness, juiciness, and overall acceptability scores. Conclusion: These results suggest that both wet- and dry-aging treatments can effectively improve sensory characteristics, and dry-aging was much more useful to enhance umami tastes and meat quality of 2 grade Hanwoo sirloins.
