Bioremediation of Pb-Contaminated Soil Based on Microbially Induced Calcite Precipitation

  • To remediate lead (Pb)-contaminated soils, it is proposed that microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) would provide the best alternative to other remediation technologies. In this study, Pb bioremediation in soils was investigated using the calcite-precipitating bacterium Kocuria flava. Results indicate that the Pb is primarily associated with the carbonate fraction in bioremediated soil samples. The bioavailability of Pb in contaminated soil was reduced so that the potential stress of Pb was alleviated. This research provides insight into the geochemistry occurring in the MICP-based Pb-remediated soils, which will help in remediation decisions.

  • A long-term field demonstration experiment of selected stabilization method to reduce the heavy metal mobility in farmland soil contaminated by heavy metals around abandoned mine site was conducted. Field demonstration experiments were established on the contaminated farmland with the wooden plate(thickness=1cm) which dimension were width=200cm, Length=200cm, height=80cm and filled with treated soil, which was mixed with lime stone and steel refining slag except on control plot. Soil samples were collected and analyzed during the experiment period(2008. 2~2008. 8) after the installation of the plots. Field demonstration experiments results showed that the application ratio of lime stone 5% was effective for immobilizing heavy metal components in contaminated farmland soil.

오염토양 제염폐수 재사용 및 재생 연구 (Study on Reuse and Recycling of Soil Washing Wastewater)

  • For volume reduction of the wastewater generated on washing the soil contaminated with cobalt, recycling and reuse experiments of the wastewater were executed. Also. the soil remediation efficiency by repetitive washing with fresh citric acid was analyzed. The soil around TRIGA was sampled for the experiment. Results of recycling experiment by replacement-precipitation method were as follows. The remediation efficiency of 1st recycling wastewater was 97% and that of 2nd recycling wastewater was 94%. Also, To obtain remediation efficiency over than 90%, the 5th repetitive washing with fresh citric acid was needed.

Cu, Pb, As 복합 중금속오염 토양의 전기동력학적 정화에서 전해질의 영향 평가 (Evaluation of Processing Fluids on Electrokinetic remediation of Cu, Pb, As-contaminated soil)

  • Electrokinetic technology was applied to remediate Cu, Pb and As-contaminated paddy soil. Removal of metal is highly dependent on the processing fluid during electrokinetic treatment. Tap water, NaOH, $HNO_3$, $Na_2EDTA$, and citric acid were evaluated as the processing fluids to enhance metal removal. Cu and Pb were transported toward cathode, however, it did not removed from soil section, while 56.6% of As was removed at a acidic condition. The strong acidic condition with nitric acid as a processing fluid enhanced the desoprtion of As from soil surface. However, longer operation time is needed to get the higher removal of Cu and Pb, and the acidification of soil after electrokinetic treatment should be solved.

국내 부지 특성을 고려한 오염토양 정화기술매칭기준안 (Draft Guideline Matching the Treatment Technology to the Soil Contaminated Site Based on the Site Properties in Korea)

  • The programmable logic array to match the treatment technology to the soil contaminated site based on the site properties in Korea was developed. Based on the previous technology screening system of FRTR (Federal Remediation Technology Roundtable) in USA, total 9 evaluation factors indicating the site characteristics were used for the technology matching process and 8 factors among them were quantitatively weighed in the order of importance. The class interval for each evaluation factor was linearly distributed to give the weighed score and 8 scores were summed up to prioritize the treatment technology. The optimal treatment technology for a specific site was determined according to the total score acquired from 8 evaluation factors used in this technology matching process. The reliability test for the developed technology matching system was done by using information of two real cleanup sites in Korea, suggesting that this guideline will be available to determine the most effective treatment technology to cleanup the soil contaminated site and also to assist the government or the company to design a successful and cost-effective site cleanup plan in Korea.

  • Immobilization of contaminants in contaminated soils by solidification processes is an attractive potential remediation process. In this study, the treatability of lead, copper, toluene, and COD was investigated by leaching test. Industrial sand was adopted as the test material and was contaminated with lead copper, and toluene to 100mg/kg, 500mg/kg, 200mg/kg respectively. P solidifying agent was used as the binder(20% by weight of contaminated soil) in the solidification treatment. The leachability of contaminants leached from the solidified soil was evaluated using column test. The percentage of contaminants leached from the solidified soil was significantly reduced by reaction of waste species with cement components and encapsulation reaction of binder. Based on the tests, it is ascertained solidification process can be a very effective method to control the elution of contaminants from the contaminated soil.

순수 분리 미생물을 이용한 오염 토양에서의 BTEX 생분해 특성과 미생물 군집 변화 (BTEX Biodegradation in Contaminated Soil Samples Using Pure Isolates and Changes in the Mixed Microbial Community Structure)

  • 본 연구에서는 BTEX로 오염된 저질로부터 순수 분리한 BTEX를 탄소원으로 $NO_3$-N를 전자수용체로 이용하는 미생물의 오염토양에 대한 현장 적용 가능성을 평가하였다. 이와 함께 주입한 순수 분리 미생물과 토착 미생물과의 상호 관계를 관찰하기 위하여 시간 경과에 따른 오염된 토양에서의 미생물 군집 변화도 관찰하였다. 이를 위해 BTEX로 오염 가능성이 적은 지역으로부터 채취한 토양 시료 100 g에 benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene을 각각 일정량 주입한 후, 동정 분리한 Pseudomonas stutzeri strain 15(DQ 202712):Klebsiella sp. strain 20(DQ 202715):Citrobacter sp. strain A(DQ 202713)를 2;1:1의 비율로 주입하여 BTEX 분해 효율과 미생물 군집 변화를 관찰하였다. 실험결과, $NO_3$-N와 BTEX가 모두 존재하는 조건에서 동정 분리한 미생물에 의한 분해 효율이 가장 높게 관찰되었다. 그리고 PCR-DGGE를 통한 미생물 군집 변화 관찰 결과, 토양 내 존재하는 다양한 미생물들의 peak는 대부분 감소된 반면, 주입한 동정분리 미생물 peak는 증가되는 것을 관찰할 수 있었다. 그러나 주입한 미생물 3종 가운데 Pseudomona stutzeri만이 우점화 된 결과가 관찰되었다.

  • Soil pollution around railroad has been occurred mainly by diesel and lubricant oil, which is difficult to treat due to high carbon number. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of inorganic-inorganic nanohybrid photo-catalyst for the remediation of diesel-contaminated railroad soil. Generally, the $TiO_2$ nanoparticle easily removes organic pollutants due to photo and natural clay of layer structure. Also, montmorillonite (MMT) have an excellent absorption property with organic component. So, we prepared $TiO_2$ pillared MMT nanohybrid photo-catalyst as a chemical oxidant through the integration of theses advantage. As a result, the removal efficiency of diesel was more than 45% at a laboratory-scale test with diesel concentration and the amount of $TiO_2$-MMT. In future, we will improve the removal efficiency of diesel to optimize experimental parameters and apply the field soil The remediation method using photo-catalyst can be used to clean up the railroad soil polluted with high concentration instead of common methods such as soil washing, bioremediation, etc..

  • Restoration of contaminated soils to an environmentally acceptable condition is important. One of the newer techniques in soil remediation is a method based on electrokinetic phenomena in soils. The technology uses electricity to affect chemical concentrations and water flow through the pores of soils. An important advantage of electrokinetic soil remediation over other in-situ processes such as soil flushing is the capability of control over the movement of the contaminants. Because the migration of the contaminants is confined by the electric field, there is little dispersion outside the treatment zone. Furthermore, the process is effective for soils with low and variable permeability. In the present study, the distributions of cadmium in the electrokinetic processing of kaolinite under the condition of constant applied voltage are investigated. Cadmium accumulates near the cathode without reducing the diffusion of hydroxide ion into the soil. In keeping the catholyte pH at neutrality, cadmium migrates toward the cathode without any accumulation of cadmium near the cathode and is successfully removed at the cathode reservoir. It was also found that the progress of electrokinetic processing of cadmium could be gasped to a certain extent by monitoring the local voltage and the current density.
