  • We investigated the enect of $O_3$ on the photosynthetic characteristics of tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima) that is naturalized plant and used as restoration plant for contaminated area. Two-year-old seedlings were planted to pots and transferred into closed $O_3$ chamber. Photosynthetic pigments contents and photosynthetic characteristics were measured every three weeks under 100 pub $O_3$ fumigation. There was no visible foliar injury by $O_3$ exposure and contents of photosynthetic pigments did not show significant differences between control and $O_3$-treated seedlings. Also there were no significant differences in stomatal conductance, and water use efficiency. But photosynthetic rate and apparent quantum yield (AQY) of $O_3$ treated seedlings were reduced after nine weeks of ozone fumigation. In addition, the reduction of carboxylation efficiency and photorespiration were observed in the leave of $O_3$ treated seedlings after six weeks. In accordance with our result, carbon fixation system of A. altissima was most sensitive to $O_3$ stress to evaluate physiological damage induced by $O_3$.

  • Soil-bentonite mixture is often used for barrier wall to prevent seawater intrusion. In this study, the effect of seawater on the permeability of soil-bentonite mixture is examined, and the effect of permeability change on the seawater intrusion is investigated. Seawater intrusion in coastal areas was modeled using a finite element method. Seawater intrusion in the seawater-contaminated zone was determined by considering the hydraulic conductivity changes using the residual flow procedure (RFP) in the simulation model. Steady state and unsteady state conditions with variations in ground water levels in an inland area were investigated. The interface between fresh water and seawater, found by the proposed method, was located lower at the seawater side and the level at the fresh water side is higher than those by conventional methods.

  • Extensive avulsion of the scalp, or stripping of a large area of soft tissue from the skull, is a serious accidnet. The avulsed scalp is often injured otherwise, such as by crushing, tearing, or from multiple laceration. The surrounding skin may be devitalized. Replacement of the scalp is usually followed by necrosis and sloughing within a short time. In such instances, the outer table of the cranium may become sucessively exposed. dry, dead, and affected by osteomyelitis. Hence the securing of early healing to prevent these is of the utmost importance. The successful case of reimplantation of the completely avulsed scalp, which is exposured to air for about 14 hours, is reported, in which there was partial growth of hair afterwards. The avulsed scalp caused by her long hair being caught in a grain belt was contaminated with hairs & dust. Authors treated this 19-year old female patient by split thickness skin graft, intermediate skin graft, full thickness skin graft from her own avulsed scalp.

  • The aims of this study were to determine concentrations of selected metals in Asian and non-Asian dust collected in Daejeon, Korea between February 2008 and December 2008 and to estimate the pollution level. The geochemical analyses of Asian dust (AD) and Non Asian dust (NAD) show that the mean concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Zr, Sb, Mo and S reached levels up to 16, 209, 31, 43, 81, 28, 31, 122 and 302 times higher, respectively, than those in uncontaminated Chinese desert soils. These results indicate that both AD and NAD serve as an atmospheric repository for trace and heavymetal accumulation. The the enrichment factor (EF) and pollution index (PI) show that AD and NAD were severely contaminated by S, Mo, Zr, Cd, Pb, Zn, Sb, Cu, and As. All indices for these metals showed either strong or notably high level of pollution relative to Chinese desert soil, principally due to the severe atmospheric pollution derived from anthropogenic activities in heavily industrial Chinese cities. Therefore, Mo, Cd, Zr, As, Cu, Sb, Pb, and Zn are the ones most strongly affected by anthropogenic inputs such as airborne pollutants.

  • This study was performed to examine use of the pump-and-treat method for remediation of TCE, CF and CT in groundwater contaminated by DNAPL. The Woosan industrial complex is located in Wonju, about 120 km east of Seoul, Korea. Two pumping wells (KDPW7 and KDPW8) and five monitoring wells (KDMW7, KDMW8, KDMW9, KDMW10, and SKW2) were installed for the test. An asphalt laboratory is a main source of the extensive subsurface contamination at this site. To evaluate change in the concentrations of TCE, CF, and CT in groundwater in the study area, three rounds of pump-and-treat pilot tests were performed (6 July to 6 August, 22 August to 6 September, and 19 September to 2 December in 2011). The groundwater levels and the concentrations of TCE, CF, and CT exhibited negative correlations in the wet season but positive correlations in the dry season, which suggests that the TCE concentrations were mainly controlled by dilution through rainfall during the wet season and by residual TCE, CF, and CT in the unsaturated zone during the dry season. These possibilities should be considered in the full-scale remediation plan.

  • Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) causes a significant economic burden in the animal production industry. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of MAP in the feces of wild duck populations residing along a riverside close to farms in the center of Korea. From wild Spot-billed (Anas poecilorhyncha) and Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) ducks, 128 fecal samples were collected and analyzed using multiplex real-time PCR, sequencing, and nested PCR to confirm the presence of the organism. The molecular analyses showed that 44 samples (34.4%) were positive for MAP, suggesting a high prevalence of MAP in the wild duck population. Considering the nature and habitat of wild ducks, this result suggests that the organism was introduced from contaminated water from waste of nearby farms, and that the wild ducks may act as a transmitter of the organism to other wild birds or livestock.

  • Even though the potential for an accident in nuclear power plants is very low, multiple emergency plans are necessary because the impact of such an accident to the public is enormous. One of these emergency plans involves a robotic system for investigating accidents under conditions of high radiation and contaminated air. To develop a robot suitable for operation in a nuclear power plant, we focused on eliminating the three major obstacles that challenge robots in such conditions: the disconnection of radio communication, falling on uneven floors, and loss of localization. To solve the radio problem, a Wi-Fi extender was used in radio shadow areas. To reinforce the walking, we developed two- and four-leg convertible walking, a floor adaptive foot, a roly-poly defensive falling design, and automatic standing recovery after falling methods were developed. To allow the robot to determine its location in the containment building, a bar code landmark reading method was chosen. When a severe accident occurs, this robot will be useful for accident condition monitoring. We also anticipate the robot can serve as a workman aid in a high radiation area during normal operations.

  • A siderophore-producing bacterium (i.e., Pseudomonas aeruginosa) capable of chelating Fe3+ from its mineral form (i.e., iron oxides) was used to enhance As uptake by plants. Since As in soil is mainly associated with iron oxides, siderophore can play an important role in As mobilization through the dissolution of As-bearing iron oxides. A series of pot experiment using Pteris cretica showed that As removal by P. cretica with siderophore-producing bacteria addition increased more than three times compared to that without bacteria addition. Competition between indigenous bacteria and introduced bacteria (i.e., P. aeruginosa) was also observed, but such competition seemed not to be significant. This study suggests that enhanced-phytoremediation by siderophore-producing bacteria addition could be a visible option for longterm As removal in the forest area at the former Janghang smelter site.

  • Concentrations of Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Ni and Cr have been estimated in sediments of the Shitalakhya River at Polash-Ghorashal area, Narsingdi, Bangladesh. 36 samples of sediments from nine sampling point at different locations of Shitalakhya River were collected to determine the concentration of Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Ni, Cr and the samples were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). The obtained results were compared with national and international guidelines. The levels of heavy metal concentrations in sediments were found to decrease in the order of Fe > Mn > Zn > Ni > Cu > Cr, respectively. The heavy metal concentration in sediment of Shitalakhya was below the recommended safe limits of heavy metals by WHO, FAO and other international standards. Contamination factor (CF) of Zn and Cu at sampling point Fsd2 show higher (> 1) values due to the influence of external discrete sources like wastage catalysts of ZnO and CuO. Geo-accumulation index values of the study indicate as non-contaminated to moderately contaminate.
