  • The groundwater system of the Cheonggyecheon watershed is very complicated because it is influenced by many factors such as pumping out, groundwater leakages into subway stations, civil use of groundwater, and leaking water from water supply and sewage lines. So the characterization and evaluation of tile groundwater flow and contaminant transport in the Cheonggyecheon water system is quite a difficult task. The purpose of this study is to analyze of the influence to the 'groundwater' below the Cheonggyecheon watershed by the 'surface water' on the Cheonggyecheon stream after the restoration. We have so far collected groundwater quality data, hydrogeologic aquifer parameters, and tile amount of leakages into subway stations and its influence on the groundwater system of the Cheonggyecheon. Results show that groundwater level was influenced by the direction and depth of a 녀bway station. This study will continue to monitor groundwater quality, a water level fluctuation relation between rainfall and groundwater recharge for further investigation of the groundwater flow system in Cheonggyecheon.

  • In this study, the characteristics of pH variations and contaminant distribution in soil are investigated during electrokinetic treatment for the purpose of restoring contaminated soil with heavy metal. For these objects, laboratory test for the kaolin contaminated by lead was performed. During electrokinetic treatment, lead was transported from anode to cathode. And 75% of lead removed within 80% region of the specimen. Most lead, however, that transported from anode to cathode precipitated in the vicinity of cathode compartment, thus the amount of lead removed by electroosmosis was little. Electrokinetic treatment satisfied regulation criteria of Korean Soil Environment Conservation Law within almost region of the specimen. But enhancement methods can be regarded as inevitable requisite for the cathode region.

  • Hydrogen peroxide takes much of the cost for Fenton reaction applied for treatment of organic contaminants. Therefore, the effective use of hydrogen peroxide makes the technology more cost effective. The effective use of hydrogen peroxide is especially needed in the soil and groundwater remediation where complete mixing is not possible and it takes a long time for reactive species to transport to the fixed target compounds. Stabilization ability for hydrogen peroxide of malonic acid was evaluated in Fenton and Fenton-like reactions in this study. Malonic acid contributes on the stabilization of hydrogen peroxide by weak interaction between iron and the stabilizer and inhibiting the catalytic role of iron. The stabilization effect increased as the solution pH decrease below the $pK_{a1}$. The stabilization effect increased as the concentration of malonic acid increased and the effect was maximized at the malonic acid concentration of about ten times higher than the iron concentration. The model organic contaminant was successfully oxidized in the presence of the stabilizer but the degradation rate was slower than the system without the stabilizer. The stabilization effect was also proved in a Fenton-like reaction where magnetite and hematite were used instead of soluble iron species.

현재 실무에서 주로 이용되고 있는 HEC-6 모형과 2차원 수치모형인 HSCTM2D(Hydordynamics, Sediment and Contaminant Transport Model)모형 및 SMS-SED2D 모형을 비교한 후 SMS-SED2D 모형을 소양강댐 유역에 적용하였다.

  • Performance of a landfill liner is evaluated based on leakage rate and mass flux. In this study, the recently utilized double composite liner system, which consists of a geomembrane (GM), a geosynthetic clay liner (GCL), a GM, and a compacted clay layer (61 or 91.5 cm) is compared with other popular composite liners including the single GCL system, the Subtitle D liner system, and the Wisconsin NR500 liner system. The leakage rate through circular and long defects in the GM of the landfill liners is analyzed using numerical models. For the mass flux criterion, the analyses of inorganic contaminant transport through defects in the GM component of liner systems and diffusion of organic compounds through intact landfill liners are conducted using three- and one-dimensional numerical models, respectively. Cadmium and toluene are used in the analyses as a typical inorganic and organic substance, respectively, which will be chemical species encountered during landfill operation. The comparison shows that the double composite liner systems are superior to the other liner systems according to the performance-based evaluation.

  • Clay minerals show a distinct induced-polarization phenomenon, which is one of the most important factors for predicting groundwater flow and contaminant transport. This paper presents a step-by-step process to estimate Cole-Cole parameters from spectral induced-polarization (IP) data measured on the surface of three-dimensional earth. First, the inversion of low-frequency resistivity survey data is made to identify the dc resistivity ${\rho}_dc$ of a volume having IP effects. The other parameters, chargeability m, time constant $\tau$, and frequency dependence c, are sought for the polarizable volume. Next, using multi-frequency data, c can be obtained as high or low asymptotes of the slope of log phase vs. log frequency. Further, for low m, intrinsic $\tau$ is approximated by apparent one, ${\tau}_a$, which is derived from the relation ${{\omega}{\tau}}_a$=1 at an angular frequency $\omega$, where the imaginary component of spectral IP data has an extreme value. Finally, to obtain intrinsic m a two-step linearized procedure has been derived. For a body of given $\tau$ and c, forward modeling with a progression of m values yields a plot of observed vs. intrinsic imaginary components for a frequency. Since this plot is essentially linear, to extract the intrinsic imaginary component is quite simple with an observed value. Using the plot of intrinsic imaginary component vs. m, intrinsic m is determined. We present a synthetic example to illustrate that the Cole-Cole parameters can be recovered from spectral IP data.

  • This study is to investigate the possibility of using activated carbon prepared from Iraqi date-pits (ADP) which are produced from palm trees (Phoenix dactylifera L.) as low-cost reactive material in the permeable reactive barrier (PRB) for treating lead (Pb+2) from the contaminated groundwater, and then compare the results experimentally with other common reactive materials such as commercial activated carbon (CAC), zeolite pellets (ZP). Factors influencing sorption such as contact time, initial pH of the solution, sorbent dosage, agitation speed, and initial lead concentration has been studied. Two isotherm models were used for the description of sorption data (Langmuir and Freundlich). The maximum lead sorption capacities were measured for ADP, CAC, and ZP and were found to be 24.5, 12.125, and 4.45 mg/g, respectively. The kinetic data were analyzed using various kinetic models particularly pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion. COMSOL Multiphysics 3.5a depend on finite element procedure was applied to formulate transmit of lead (Pb+2) in the two-dimensional numerical (2D) model under an equilibrium condition. The numerical solution shows that the contaminant plume is hindered by PRB.

  • Field-scale DNAPL dissolution is controlled by the topology of DNAPL distributions with respect to the velocity field. A high resolution percolation model was developed and employed to simulate the distribution of DNAPL within source zones. Statistically anisotropic permeability values and capillary parameters were generated for 10${\times}$10${\times}$10 m domains at a resolution of 0.05 to 0.1 m for various statistical properties. TCE leakage was simulated at various rates and the distribution of residual DNAPL in 'fingers' and 'lenses' was computed. Variations in finger and lens geometries, frequencies, average DNAPL saturations, and overall source topology were predicted to be strongly influenced by statistical properties of the medium as well as by injection rate and fluid properties. Model results were found to be consistent with observations from controlled DNAPL release experiments reported in the literature. The computed distributions of aquifer properties and DNAPL were utilized to perform high-resolution numerical simulations of groundwater flow and dissolved transport. Simulations were performed to assess the effect of grout or foam injection in bore holes within the source zone and of shallow point-releases of fluids with various properties on dissolution in DNAPL dissolution rate, even for widely spaced injection points. The results indicate that measures that induced partial flow reductions through DNAPL source zones can significantly decrease dissolution rates from residual DNAPL. The benefit from induced partial flow reductions is two-fold: 1) local flow reduction in DNAPL contaminated zones reduces mass transfer rates, and 2) contaminant flux reductions occur due to the decrease in groundwater velocity

In this study, composite liner systems including the GCL(geosynthetic clay liner) composite liner, the Subtitle D liner, the Wisconsin NR500 liner, and the recently utilized double composite liner, which is a combination of the GCL composite liner and Subtitle D-type liner, have been examined. For the mass flux criterion, contaminant transport through defects in the GM of landfill liners can be evaluated based on the calculated leakage rates.
