This study presents a contaminant transport model suitable for a 2-dimensional heterogeneous aquifer with multiple contaminant sources. It uses a streamline simulation, which transforms a multi-dimensional problem into multiple 1dimensional problems. It runs flow simulation, streamline tracking, and calculation of contaminant concentrations by turns. The model is verificated with a Visual MODFLOW by comparing contaminant concentration distributions and breakthrough curves at an observation well. Due to its fast simulation, it can be applied to time consuming simulations such as in a fine-grided aquifer, an inverse modeling and other applications.

This paper presents the predicted results by CFD technique of air flow and contaminant distribution in a full-scale kitchen opened to a living room, ventilated by a exhaust hood. To analyze the characteristics of the indoor environment, the concept of contaminant index was defined. In this study, the locations of the gas range and the window were chosen as the parameters to investigate the indoor environment. The values of the contaminant index for several layout of the gas range and the window were calculated and compared. When the gas range is installed along the wall with specified window location, its position in relation to the wall has unnoticed effect on contaminant infer. Once the location of the gas range is fixed, the indoor air quality may deteriorate by the proximity of the window to the gas range. This is due to the shorter distance that external fresh air must travel within the kitchen before it reaches the exhaust fan.

Mobile bacterial particles can act as carriers and enhance the transport of hydrophobic contaminants in ground water by reducing retardation effects. Because of their colloidal size and favorable surface conditions, bacteria can act as efficient contaminant carriers. When such carriers exist in a porous medium, the system can be thought of as three phases: an aqueous phase, a carrier phase, and a stationary solid matrix phase. Contaminant can be present in either or all of these phases. In this study, a mathematical model based on mass balances is developed to describe the transport and fate of biodegradable contaminant in a porous medium. Bacterial mass transfer mechanism between aqueous and solid matrix phases, and contaminant mass transfer between aqueous and bacterial phases are represented by kinetic models. Governing equations are non-dimensionalized and solved to analyze the bacteria facilitated contaminant transport. The numerical results of the facilitation effect match favorably with experimental data reported in the literature. Results show that the contaminant transport can be described by local equilibrium assumption when Damkohler numbers are larger than 10. Significant sensitivities to model parameters, particularly bacterial growth rate and influent bacterial concentration, were discovered.
The complexation of co-contaminant mixtures between Ag(I) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules (naphthalene, pyrene, and perylene) were investigated to quantify the equilibrium constants of their complexes and elucidate the interactions between Ag(I) and PAH molecules. The apparent solubilities of PAHs in aqueous solutions increased with increasing Ag(I) ion concentration. The values, K$_1$ and K$_2$ of equilibrium constants of complexes of Ag(I)-PAHs, were 2.990 and 0.378, 3.615 and 1.261, and 4.034 and 1.255, for naphthalene, pyrene, and perylene, respectively, The K$_1$and K$_2$ values of PAHs for Ag(I) increased in the order of naphthalene < pyrene < perylene and naphthalene < pyrene ≒ perylene, respectively, indicating that a larger size of PAH molecule is likely to have more a richer concentration of electrons on the plane surfaces which can lead to stronger complexes with the Ag(I) ion. For the species of Ag(I)-PAH complexes, a 1:1 Ag(I) : the aromatic complex, AgAr$\^$+/, was found to be a predominant species over a 2:1 Ag(I) : aromatic complex, Ag$_2$Ar$\^$++/. The PAH molecules with four or more aromatic rings and/or bay regions were observed to have slightly less affinity with the Ag(I) ion than expected, which might result from inhibiting forces such as the spread of aromatic $\pi$ electrons over o wide molecular surface area and the intermolecular electronic repulsion in bay regions.
A One-Dimensional Water Flow and Contaminant Transport in Unsaturated Zone (FTUNS) code has been developed in order to interpret radionuclide migration in an unsaturated zone. The pore-size distribution index (n) and the inverse of the air-entry value ($\alpha$) for an unsaturated zone were measured by KS M ISO 11275 method. The hydraulic parameters of the unsaturated soil are investigated by using soil from around a nuclear facility in Korea. The effect of hydraulic parameters on radionuclide migration in an unsaturated zone has been analyzed. The higher the value of the n-factor, the more the cobalt concentration was condensed. The larger the value of $\alpha$-factor, the faster the migration of cobalt was and the more aggregative the cobalt concentration was. Also, it was found that an effect on contaminant migration due to the pore-size distribution index (n) and the inverse of the air-entry value ($\alpha$) was minute. Meanwhile, migrations of cobalt and cesium are in inverse proportion to the Freundich isotherm coefficient. That is to say, the migration velocity of cobalt was about 8.35 times that of cesium. It was conclusively demonstrated that the Freundich isotherm coefficient was the most important factor for contaminant migration.

The objective of this study is to predict behavior of a contaminant plume and concentration of contaminants in soil through tile relations between the concentrations of contaminants in groundwater and in soil on the shallow sandy aquifer contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons. The current state of the plume and its fate in the study area was simulated by using the MODFLOW-RT3D model and geochemical parameters of grounwater had been monitored and measured during 3 years (1999~2001). The relations between the concentrations of contaminants in each medium were taken from the investigation of site characterization conducted in 1999. Simulation results showed the center of the plume would migrate 407m twenty years later. At that time, the concentration would be decreased down to about 26 mg/$\ell$(93%). In comparison TEX concentration in the groundwater with that in the soil, the value of correlation coefficient (r=0.876) was as high as it could be used. Based on the high r-value, the linear equation was obtained from regression analysis. The results of model simulation by RT3D engine showed that the highest TEX concentration in the groundwater would be 58.8 mg/$\ell$ 16 years later, and then the TEX concentration in soil would be below the alarming level (80 mg/kg) of regulation criteria.

To predict the fate of groundwater contaminants, accurate spatially continuous information is needed. Because most field sampling of groundwater contaminants are not conducted spatially continuous manner, a special estimation technique is required to interpolate/extrapolate concentration distributions at unmeasured locations. A practical three-dimensional estimations method for in situ groundwater contaminant concentrations is introduced. It consistas of two general steps: estimation of macroscopic transport process and kriging. Using field data and nonlinear optimization techniques, the macroscopic behavior of the contaminant plume is estimated. A spatial distribution of residuals is obtained by subtracting the macroscopic transport portion from field data, then kriging is applied to estimate residuals at unsampled locations. To reduce outlier effects on obtaining correlations between residual data which are needed for determining variougram models, the R(sub)p-estimator is introduced. The proposed estimation method is applied to a field data set.

Phytoremediation which uses plants to enhance the bioremediation through stimulation of microbial activity and root uptake, has been a topic of increasing interest. Mathematical model were developed that can be applied to various bioremediation methods in the unsaturated zone, especially phytoremediation, for simulating the fate and transport of contaminants under field conditions. A 2-year field study was conducted using 72 (1.5m long and 0.1 m diameter) column lysimeters with four treatments: Johnsongrass; wild rye grass; a rotation of Johnsongrass and wild rye grass; and unplanted fallow conditions. The developed model represented the fate and transport of contaminant both in vegetated and unplanted soils satisfactorily for field applications. Parameters related to the contaminant concentration in the water phase were the main parameters determining the contaminant fate in the vadose zone and indicated that the bioavailability can be the most important factor in the success of phytoremediation as well as bioremediation applications.
To determine the optimum ventilation systems during long tunnel excavation, the velocity vector profile and the contaminant's distribution at working place are studied using 2-D, 3-D numerical analysis. The main results can be summarized as follow; In case of long tunnels, blower-exhaust-mixture types which enable to use soft blast ducts is most appropriate in terms of ventilation and economical efficiency. Of the same ventilation types, ventilation efficiency has a difference according to blast ducts and the distance between fan and working place. The 3-D numerical result shows that arranging blower and exhaust ducts in the right and left corners of the tunnel respectively is effective to discharge contaminant. The result of the real measurement shows that CO concentration can be reduced to below 50 ppm, which is regulation value, as 16-minutes fan operation goes on.
Indoor inhalation of vapors intruded into buildings is an important exposure pathway in volatile organic compoundscontaminated sites. Site-specifically measured indoor air concentration is preferentially used for risk assessment. However, when indoor air concentration of VOC is not measured, the indoor air concentration needs to be estimated from soil concentration or measured soil gas concentration of the VOC. Some risk assessment guidance (e.g., Korea Ministry of Environment (KMOE) and American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International guidance) estimate the indoor air concentration from soil concentration while other guidances (e.g., United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and Dutch National Institute for Public Health (RIVM)) estimate it from measured soil gas concentration. This study derived indoor inhalation risks of intruded benzene in two benzene-contaminated residential areas with four different risk assessment guidances (i.e., KMOE, USEPA, ASTM, and Dutch RIVM) and compared the derived risks. The risk assessment results revealed that indoor air estimation approach from soil concentration could either underestimate (when the contaminant is not detected in soil) or overestimate (when the contaminant is detected in soil even at negligible concentration) the indoor air inhalation risk. Hence, this paper recommends to estimate indoor air concentration from soil gas concentration, rather than soil concentration. Discussions about the various indoor air concentration estimation approaches are provided.
