  • Effective plan and operation managements can be established in advance if the traffic volume of container ship will be forecasted in the trend for container port's cargo volume to increase. At the viewpoint for marine traffic the number of incoming and outgoing container ship can be presumed in the long run and organised rational plan to deal the demand of marine traffic on the basis. Therefore, the paper estimated the future traffic volume of incoming and outgoing container ship for Busan, Gwangyang, and Incheon port on a forecasting data basis of container volume suggested in the national ports base plan. The trends of volume per ship on container were estimated with ARIMA models and seasonal index was computed. Thus the traffic volume of container ship in the future was estimated computing with volume per ship in 2011,2015, and 2020 respectively.

  • Once it has been built, a container terminal is impossible to move to another location. It is hard to rectify wrong decisions in a container terminal. This highlights the importance of decision making for a container terminal. The port management about a container terminal has developed from a cargo interface location between sea and land transport, to the standardization of information and procedures due to globalization among global shipping and terminal operators. This research focuses on the current states of market and management for global container terminal operators by investigating up-to-date data for them. The current market states for global container terminal operators are analyzed by using by Herfindahl-Hirschman Index. The analyses of current management states for global container terminal operators are divided into profitability analysis, activity analysis, and bankruptcy risk analysis. Finally, global container terminal operators are clustered into three groups by the current management states.

  • 97.5% of our country's exports and 87.2% of imports are transported by sea, making ports an important component of the Korean economy. To efficiently operate these ports, it is necessary to improve the short-term prediction of port water volume through scientific research methods. Previous research has mainly focused on long-term prediction for large-scale infrastructure investment and has largely concentrated on container port water volume. In this study, short-term predictions for petroleum and liquefied gas cargo water volume were performed for Ulsan Port, one of the representative petroleum ports in Korea, and the prediction performance was confirmed using the deep learning model LSTM (Long Short Term Memory). The results of this study are expected to provide evidence for improving the efficiency of port operations by increasing the accuracy of demand predictions for petroleum and liquefied gas cargo water volume. Additionally, the possibility of using LSTM for predicting not only container port water volume but also petroleum and liquefied gas cargo water volume was confirmed, and it is expected to be applicable to future generalized studies through further research.

  • As domestic logistics environment has changed into global logistics, various logistics parties are participating in processing logistics business. Goods is packed into container and delivered to consignee in steps. The goods may be damaged or lost since it has not directly delivered to consignee by single entity during the delivery process. Therefore, all parties want to know the flow of export/import cargos. However, it is very difficult to follow cargo flow consistently delivered from consignor to consignee. Because cargo flow does not be matched up information flow and information systems are based on neither standard business processes nor standard data, which makes it very difficult to associate logistics data among various logistic parties. This paper performs business process modeling for cargo tracking with international standard modeling methodology released by UN/CEFACT. And then, the standard data is defined for cargo tracking business process of unified and integrated business collaboration. The resulting business process model and data model will support international interoperability.

  • The aim of this paper is to make projection of the demand for export loaded container throughput originating at Incheon port in Korea over the period in question. Systematic analysis is used as a forecasting method instead of quantitative analysis. First of all, the method explores coincident indicators which may reflect the square measure of neighboring industrial complexes which originate/destinate general cargo in export traffic trends. It is noted that in terms of the export loaded container throughput, per unit production scale is intermediated transforming from square measure of production facilities to freight weight in Korea. Consequently, the future progress of the volume can be anticipated relying on the development schemes for developing square measure out of the total square of the industrial complexes. Thus, moving-into percentage of the industrial complexes, percentage of business categories, percentage of capacity and percentage of passing through via Incheon port are adopted and the future traffic demand is projected taking advantage of them.

  • Composite material-due to low density-causes weight savings, which results in lower fuel consumption of transport vehicles. The aim of the research was to change the existing base-plate of the aluminum airplane container with the composite sandwich plate in order to reduce the weight of the containers of cargo aircrafts. The newly constructed sandwich plate consists of aluminum honeycomb core and composite face-sheets. The face-sheets consist of glass or carbon or hybrid fiber layers. The orientations of the fibers in the face-sheets were 0°, 90° and ±45°. Multi-objective optimization method was elaborated for the newly constructed sandwich plates. Based on the design aim, the importance of the objective functions (weight and cost of sandwich plates) was the same (50%). During the optimization nine design constraints were considered: stiffness, deflection, facing stress, core shear stress, skin stress, plate buckling, shear crimping, skin wrinkling, intracell buckling. The design variables were core thickness and number of layers of the face-sheets. During the optimization both the Weighted Normalized Method of the Excel Solver and the Genetic Algorithm Solver of Matlab software were applied. The mechanical properties of composite face-sheets were calculated by Laminator software according to the Classical Lamination Plate Theory and Tsai-Hill failure criteria. The main added-value of the study is that the multi-objective optimization method was elaborated for the newly constructed sandwich structures. It was confirmed that the optimal new composite sandwich construction-due to weight savings and lower fuel consumption of cargo aircrafts - is more advantageous than conventional all-aluminum container.

  • The role of container ports contributes greatly to international trade and national or regional economic development by supporting maritime transportation and occupies a central position in the supply chain connecting sea and land. The performance(traffic volume) of a port generally depends on geographic, economic, and operational factors etc. For the past several decades, container port volumes have grown with fluctuation. This study amis to analyze how global ports have undergone changes in terms of cargo volume by region, size and period. For the analysis, only the volumes of global top 100 ports were used. Shift-share analysis and BCG matrix analysis were employed as methodologies. According to the result of the analysis, the relative volatility of port traffic over the past 16 years as a whole was found to be limited. On the other hand, ports in China and Southeast and Southwest Asia, which are economically growing for the last decades, showed growing trends, while ports in Northeast Asia and Europe appeared to be in a stagnant or declining phase. It also shows that most of the global ports maintain limited changes in cargo volume because they are already positioned as central ports in the region. In addition, it can be seen that the global port volume has a close relationship with the change in the economic capability of the relevant region or country.

  • Generally, container ships contain cargo holds with cell guides that serve to increase the container loading and unloading efficiency, minimize the space loss, and fix containers during the voyage. This paper describes a new quality management system for the cell guides of container ships (the so-called Trim Cell Guide system). The main functions of this system are the trimming of the point cloud obtained using a 3D scanner and an inspection simulation for cell guide quality. In other words, the raw point cloud of cell guides after construction is measured using a 3D scanner. Here, the raw point cloud contains a lot of noise and unnecessary information. Using the GUI interface supported by the system, the raw point cloud can be trimmed. The trimmed point cloud is used in a simulation for cell guide quality inspection. The RANSAC (Random Sample Consensus) algorithm is used for the transverse section representation of a cell guide at a certain height and applied for the calculation of the intervals between the cell guides and container. When the container hits the cell guides during the inspection simulation, the container is rotated horizontally and checked again for a possible collision. It focuses on a system that can be simulated with the same inspection process as in a shipyard. For a practicality review, we compared the precision data gained from an inspection simulation with the measured data. As a result, it was confirmed that these values were within approximately ${\pm}2mm$.
