  • Shear behavior of granular soils largely affects the safety and stability of underground and earth structures. This study presents the characteristics of shear zone in a direct shear test using shear wave and electrical resistivity measurements. An innovative direct shear box made of transparent acrylic material has been developed to prevent direct electric current. Bender elements and electrical resistivity probe are embedded in the wall of direct shear box to estimate the shear wave velocities and the electrical resistivity at the shear and non-shear zones. Experimental results show that the void ratio and shear wave velocity at shear zone increase during shearing while the values remain constant at non-shear zone. The results demonstrate correlation among the contact force, small strain shear modulus, and void ratio at shear zone. This study suggests that the application of the modified direct shear box including shear wave and electrical resistivity measurements may become an effective tool for analyzing soil behavior at shear zone.

  • The vertical tensile stress, ${\sigma}_y$, in the contact zone between the overlay (mortar layer) and substratum (base concrete) can be the main cause of the failure phenomenon of overlaid concrete structures. The development of tensile stress, ${\sigma}_y$, due to external rainy condition was analytically investigated using finite element method. Rainfall intensity $(n_R\;=\;1/a,\;t_R\;=\;10min,\;60min)$, thickness of overlay (do=1,2,4,10 cm) and overlay material (CM,ECM,EM) were the main variables in the analyses. An equation was suggested with which the development of vertical tensile stress, ${\sigma}_y$, in the rainy condition could be determined. Using this equation, it is possible to select proper material properties and overlay thicknesses to prevent failure in the contact zone due to thermally transient condition caused by rainfall.

  • A plastic zone size is regarded as a measure of material resistance, and also it determines the fracture behavior. The importance of estimating or measuring the plastic zone size cannot be too emphasized. In this article, SDSP(Stereo Digital Speckle Photography) is examined as a new techniques to measure the plastic zone developed in a ductile metal. This technique is simple, vibration free and non-contact, and measures simultaneously in-plane displacements as well as out-of plane displacements like the side necking. Experimental results for a CT specimen are presented to demonstrate the accuracy in comparison with those obtained by recrystallization technique and finite element analysis.

  • The skarn type tungsten deposits are developed in the contact aureole of Jurassic biotite-hornblende granodiorite and limestone beds. The latter can be divided into the Great Limestone Series of Joseon System and Gabsan Formation which is correlative to the Hongjeom Series of Pyeongahn System. The skarns are impregnated in the limestone, sandstone, schist and granodiorite, and showing zonal distribution. The five skarn zones are from fresh limestone inwards to wollastonite-skarn, clinopyroxene-skarn, clinopyroxene-garnet skarn, garnet skarn and vesuvianite skarn zone. The ore mineral, scheelite, disseminates in the clinopyroxene-garnet and vesuvianite skarn zone, and the size of the scheelite crystals in vesuvianite skarn zone is larger than in clinopyroxene- garnet skarn zone. According to the mineral paragenesis and the composition of skarn minerals, oxygen fugacity ($fo_2$) is low. Fluid inclusions in quartz comprise much $LCO_2$ and fluid inclusion studies revealed that the homogenization temperatures range $240-290^{\circ}C$.

  • This study modeled in axisymmetric solid elements and analyzed the neighbourhood of the contact surface zone between liner and block in a diesel engine. The results of finite element analysis show that this model is deformed by bolt jointed load and pressure load and that stresses can vary much due to major dimensional changes in the joint area. Guidelines have been developed for selecting fillet radii and for the width of the contact area between liner and block.

  • The water treatment by was performed to remove VOC and organic substances in the multi-stage ozone contactor. Ozone is mainly utilized to change the chemical structures of organic substance, of which finally has the purpose to degrad them. The removal efficiency of VOC has 20~60% at the ozone concentration of 3 ppm, in case of trichloroethylene, its efficiency is reduced by 85% at the ozone contact time of 8 min. Design factors such as the number of stage, ozone concentration, zone contact time are determined for optimal treatment in the multi-stage contactor.

  • The inside contact characteristics in abrasive belt drives were investigated analytically and experimentally for (1) driver pulley contact wheel and (2) driven pulley contact wheel. The concentrated contact forces in the grinding zone divided the entire belt-pulley contact are by three distinct areas and the tangential friction forces in the active areas caused the normal forces to change, which resulted in the different belt force distribution compared with those of the ordinary flat belt drives. The experimental results for the normal pressure (belt tension) distribution were in good agreement with the theoretical results.

  • The Advanced Power Reactor 1400 (APR1400) Steam Generator (SG) uses alloy 690 as a tube material and SA-508 Grade 3 Class 1 as a tubesheet material to form tube-to-tubesheet joint through hydraulic expansion process. In this paper, the residual stresses in the SG tube-to-tubesheet contact area was investigated by applying Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) methodology and the V-model. The use of MBSE transform system description into diagrams which clearly describe the logical interaction between functions hence minimizes the risk of ambiguity. A theoretical and Finite Element Methodology (FEM) was used to assess and compare the residual stresses in the tube-to-tubesheet contact area. Additionally, the axial strength of the tube to tubesheet joint based on the pull-out force against the contact joint force was evaluated and recommended optimum autofrettage pressure to minimize residual stresses in the transition zone given. A single U-tube hole and tubesheet with ligament thickness was taken as a single cylinder and plane strain condition was assumed. An iterative method was used in FEM simulation to find the limit autofrettage pressure at which pull-out force and contact force are of the same magnitude. The joint contact force was estimated to be 20 times more than the pull-out force and the limit autofrettage pressure was estimated to be 141.85MPa.

  • High-density UMo/Zr monolithic nuclear fuel plates have a promising application prospect in high flux research and test reactors. The solid state welding method called co-rolling is used for their fabrication. Hot co-rolling simulations for the composite blanks of UMo/Zr monolithic nuclear fuel plates are performed. The effects of coupon sizes and mechanical property parameters on the contact pressures between the to-be-bonded surfaces are investigated and analyzed. The numerical simulation results indicate that 1) the maximum contact pressures between the fuel coupon and the Zircaloy cover exist near the central line along the plate length direction; as a whole the contact pressures decrease toward the edges in the plate width direction; and lower contact pressures appear at a large zone near the coupon corner, where de-bonding is easy to take place in the in-pile irradiation environments; 2) the maximum contact pressures between the fuel coupon and the Zircaloy parts increase with the initial coupon thickness; after reaching a certain thickness value, the contact pressures hardly change, which was mainly induced by the complex deformation mechanism and special mechanical constitutive relation of fuel coupon; 3) softer fuel coupon will result in lower contact pressures and form interfaces being more out-of-flatness.

  • This paper deals with the distributions of the contact stress in oil seals. The distributions of the contact stress due to the temperature effects are analyzed for various values of the interference for a nitrile rubber seal. The calculated FEM results show that the relative maximum stresses occur at the contacting area against the shaft, the flex zone, and the contacting area of the garter spring grooves. Using the coupled temperature-stress FEM a nalysis, the contact force of a radial lip seal with and without the garter spring are studied as a function of shaft diameter. The calculated results of mechanical analysis show good correspondence with those of the coupled thermal-mechanical analysis method except small values of the interference. And the calculated results indicated that the thermal stresses only have a very minor influence on the deformed shape of the lip seal as the interference increases. But the coupled temperature-stress analysis will be very useful tool to predict the contact behaviors of rubber lip seals for small values of the interference.
