The contact tip for gas metal arc welding has important functions to transmit the welding current to the wire and to guide the wire to molten pool. If the contact tip is damaged, it is a cause of lowering the welding productivity due to removal of welding defects and replacement of contact tip. In case of the use of a contact tip for a long time the arc is unstable because the processed hole in the contact tip center is larger, and the variation of aiming position of the welding wire causes a seam tracking error. In this study, gas metal arc welding experiments using contact tip of three different materials were performed. The contact tips with Cu-P, Cu-Cr, and Cu-ODS were used at the experiments, and the welding characteristics by each contact tip were evaluated. After welding contact tip appearance, welding spatter adhesion amount of the nozzle, and weld bead appearance were evaluated. The welding current and welding voltage were measured to verify arc stability during arc welding.
The contact tip for flux cored arc welding has important functions to transmit the welding current to the wire and to guide the wire to molten pool. A damaged contact tip causes a productivity reduction and a welding quality problem. In this study, the welding experiments for the wear resistance of contact tip regarding flux cored wire types were performed. With two fold type and a seamless type flux cored wires, the wear rates of contact tips were compared. In addition, the wear rate was checked according to the contact tip position.
In tapping mode atomic force microscopy(TM-AFM). the vibro-contact response of a resonating tip is used to measure the nanoscale topology and other properties of a sample surface. However, the nonlinear tip-surface interact ions can affect the tip response and destabilize the tapping mode control. Especially it is difficult to obtain a good scanned image of high adhesion surfaces such as polymers and biomoleculars using conventional tapping mode control. In this study, theoretical and experimental investigations are made on the nonlinear dynamics and control of TM-AFM. To analyze the complex dynamics and control of the tapping tip, the classical contact models are adopted due to the surface adhesion. Also we report the surface adhesion is an additional important parameter to determine the control stability of TM-AFM. In addition, we prove that it is more adequate to use Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) contact model to obtain a reasonable tapping response in AFM for the soft and high adhesion samples.
Contact tip is located so near to welding arc that it is heated to high temperature during long time welding. In such a situation, tip changes in its microstructure and in turn its mechanical properties. This study was intended to investigate those changes by using simulated heat treatment. As a result of this study, it was confirmed that tip of Cu-P alloy hardened with severe cold deformation lose its initial hardness to a large extent within 60 min due to the occurrence of rapid recrystallization while that of Cu-Cr composition hardened by proper aging treatment can preserve its intial hardness for about 1,000 min or longer. Based on these results, suggested was a guideline that can classify contact tips into two different grades: deformation-hardened type and precipitation-hardened type. Following a guideline, a tip with Cu-Cr composition can be classified into the deformation-hardened type if it is in the over-aged condition. Such a guideline is well described.
In the presence of ${\mu}-tip$ embedded in a slot-die head for stripe coatings, there arises the capillary flow that limits an increase of the stripe density, which is required for the potential applications in organic light-emitting diode displays. With an attempt to suppress it, we have employed a computational fluid dynamics software and performed simulations by varying the ${\mu}-tip$ length and the contact angles of the head lip and ${\mu}-tip$. We have first demonstrated that such a capillary flow phenomenon (a spread of solution along the head lip) observed experimentally can be reproduced by the computational fluid dynamics software. Through simulations, we have found that stronger capillary flow is observed in the hydrophilic head lip with a smaller contact angle and it is suppressed effectively as the contact angle increases. When the contact angle of the head lip increases from $16^{\circ}$ to $130^{\circ}$, the distance a solution can reach decreases sharply from $256{\mu}m$ to $44{\mu}m$. With increasing contact angle of the ${\mu}-tip$, however, the solution flow along the ${\mu}-tip$ is disturbed and thus the capillary flow phenomenon becomes more severe. If the ${\mu}-tip$ is long, the capillary flow also appears strong due to an increase of flow resistance (electronic-hydraulic analogy). It can be suppressed by reducing the ${\mu}-tip$ length, but not as effectively as reducing the contact angle of the head lip.
In non-contact mode atomic force microscopy, the response of a resonating tip is used to measure the nanoscale topography and other properties of a sample surface. However, the tip-surface interactions can affect the tip response and destabilize the non-contact mode control. Especially it is difficult to obtain a good scanned image of high adhesion surfaces such as polymers using conventional hard NCHR tip and non-contact mode control. In this study, experimental investigation is made on the non-contact mode imaging and we report the microcantilever having low stiffness (OMCL) is useful to measure the properties of samples such as elasticity. In addition, we proved that it was adequate to use low stiffness microcantilever to obtain a good scanned image in AFM for the soft and high adhesion sample.
The nanoimprint lithography technology makes higher density of semiconductor device and larger capacity of storage media. In this technology the induced damage while detaching polymer pattern from mold should be minimized. In order to analyze the problem, the basic knowledge of adhesion between the polymer and the mold is required. In this study a contact experiment of polyisobutylene specimen with spherical steel tip and polyisobutylene bead tip was conducted using nano indenter. During the contact experiment with various loading rate under load control the contact behavior of viscoelastic material was measured, i.e., the load and displacement between the tip and the specimen were measured. The data was analyzed by HBK model to obtain the stress intensity factor of contact edge and the contact radius as a function of time. Also the adhesion energies between steel/polyisobutylene and polyisobutylene/polyisobutylene were obtained employing the analysis of the crack of viscoelastic material by Schapery.
This paper present experimental results by non-contact mode Atomic Force Microscopy using high aspect ratio tips (HAR-T). We fabricated the carbon nanotube tip based on dielectrophoresis and the carbon nano probe by focused ion beam after dielectrophoretic assembling. In this paper, we measure AAO sample and trench structure to estimate HAR-T's performance and compared with conventional Si tip. We confirmed that results of HAR-T's performance in non contact mode was very superior than conventional tip.
Ultrasonic atomic force microscopy(Ultrasonic-AFM) can be used to obtain images of the elastic properties of a subsurface and to evaluate the elastic properties by measuring the contact resonance frequency. When a tip is in contact with the sample, it is necessary to understand the cantilever behavior and the tip-sample interaction for the quantitative and reliable analysis. Therefore, precise analysis models that can accurately simulate the tip-sample contact are required; these can serve as good references for predicting the contact resonance frequency. In this study, modal analyses of the first four modes were performed to calculate the contact resonance frequency by using a spring model, and the deformed shapes of the cantilever were visualized at each mode. We presented the contact characteristics of the cantilever with a variety of contact conditions by applying the contact area, contact material thickness, and material properties as the parameters for the FEM analysis.
This paper presents development of carbon nanotube (CNT) tip modified by focused ion beam (FIB) and experimental results in non-contact mode of atomic force microscopy (AFM) using fabricated tip. We used an electric field which causes dielectrophoresis, to align and deposit CNTs on a conventional silicon tip. The morphology of the fabricated CNT tip was then modified into a desired shape using focused ion beam. We measured anodic aluminum oxide sample and trench structure to estimate the performance of FIB-modified tip and compared with those of conventional Si tip. We demonstrate that FIB modified tip in non contact mode had superior characteristics than conventional tip in the respects of wear, image resolution and sidewall measurement.
