The stone pagoda structure is treated as a discontinuous masonry structure, and the contact surface characteristics between stones is a very important factor in the discontinuum behavior analysis. So, it is necessary to find out material and structural characteristics of stone contact surface to perform the structural analysis for safety evaluation. Accordingly, it is important to analyze the material properties of stone surface and secure the structural characteristics through various contact surface states. Therefore, in this study, various test specimens applying the filler between the surface roughness and the stone in the contact surface treatment technique of the stone pagoda were manufactured, and compression test and shear test were carried out. Also, we analyzed the material and structural characteristics of the stone contact surface through the comparison of experimental results.

The electrical/thermal stabilities and magnetic field controllability of a no-insulation (NI) high-temperature superconducting magnet are characterized by contact resistance between turn-to-turn layers, and the contact resistance characteristics are determined by properties of conductor surface and winding tension. In order to accurately predict the electromagnetic characteristics of the NI coil in a design stage, it is necessary to control the contact resistance characteristics within the design target parameters. In this paper, the contact resistance and critical current characteristics of a rare-earth barium copper oxide (REBCO) conductor were measured to analyze the effects of surface treatment conditions (roughness and oxidation level) of the copper stabilizer layer in REBCO conductor. The test samples with different surface roughness and oxidation levels were fabricated and conductor surface analysis was performed using scanning electron microscope, alpha step surface profiler and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Moreover, the contact resistance and critical current characteristics of the samples were measured using the four-terminal method in a liquid nitrogen impregnated cooling environment. Compared with as-received REBCO conductor sample, the contact resistance values of the REBCO conductors, which were post-treated by the scratch and oxidation of the surface of the copper stabilizer layer, tended to increase, and the critical current values were decreased under certain roughness and oxidation conditions.

This study aims to experimentally investigate the evaporation characteristics of nanofluid droplet on heated surface at boiling temperature of DI-water. In particular, textured surface was used to examine the effect of wettability on evaporation. At the initial stage of evaporation process, dynamic contact angle (DCA) of nanofluid droplet with 0.01 vol.% concentration on textured surface rapidly increased over its equilibrium contact angle by generated large bubble inside the droplet due to lower wettability. However, contact angle of nanofluid droplet with higher concentration on textured surface decreased with surface tension. In addition, total evaporation time of droplet on textured surface was considerably delayed due to reduction of contact area between droplet and solid surface. Thus, evaporation characteristics were highly affected by the nanofluid concentration and surface wettability.

The flying height of contact slider is determined by vertical and pitching motions. This paper performed the computer simulation for flying height change of contact slider. It is changed by many parameters, contact stiffness. contact damping, all bearing stiffness ratio and so on. So computer simulation analysis is performed for knowing for what change of these parameters influences in flying height of contact slider. The practical recording zone surface is gotten by using SPM. In recording zone, flying height is simulated for each parameter. the settling time which the flying height of contact slider is lower than 10nm is analyzed over practical disk surface for changing each parameter. Through these results, the contact slider can be analyzed for more accuracy dynamic characteristics.

The objective of this paper is the investigation of the relationships between the surface roughness and film evaporative characteristics of the surface. For example, when the droplet of liquid is in contact with the solid surface, its behavior strongly depends on the surface characteristics. The material properties and geometry - profile shape, waviness, roughness - of the surfaces have strongly influenced on the wettability of the droplet. To investigate the effect of the surface roughness on the film evaporation, firstly, the characteristics of wettabilities were studied according to contact angle and surface tree energy of specimens with various roughness heights. Secondly, the experimental test were carried out on capacities of the tubes diversly roughened by using different kinds of emery papers. Finally, the relationships between the film evaporation characteristics and surface roughness were explained by means of the correlation of contact angle and surface free energy with surface roughness and the influences of surface tree energy on the heat transfer performance.

Two surfaces that have relative motion show different characteristics according to surface roughness or surface patterns in all lubrication areas. For two rough surfaces with mixed lubrication, this paper proposes a new approach that includes the contact characteristics of the surfaces and a probabilistic method for a numerical analysis of lubrication. As the contact area of the two surfaces changes according to the loading conditions, asperity contact is very important. An average flow model developed by Patir-Cheng is central to the study of lubrication for rough surfaces. This average flow model also refers to a multi-asperity contact model for deriving a modified Reynolds equation and calculating the lubricant characteristics of a bearing surface with random roughness during fluid flow. Based on the average flow model, this paper carried out a numerical analysis of lubrication using a contact model by considering a load change made by the actual contact of asperities between two surfaces. Lubrication properties show different characteristics according to the surface patterns. This study modeled various geometric surface patterns and calculated the characteristics of lubrication.

In this study, we aimed to clarify the wettability and anisotropic flow characteristics of rice leaves as a basic study for engineering applications of anisotropic flow characteristics of rice leaf surface. To investigate the surface structure of rice leaf, the micro grooves and asperities of rice leaves were analyzed and quantified by scanning electron microscope, Confocal laser scanning microscopy, and stylus profilometer. The analysis of the structure of rice leaf surface confirmed that asymmetrical cone - like protrusions in leaf veins were inclined toward the leaf tip. The static contact angle test showed that the contact angle at the midline vein or leaf vein location where the micropapilla is concentrated is about $20^{\circ}$ higher than the leaf blade position. The contact angles of fresh and dried rice leave were also compared. The dried rice leaves showed a contact angle of about $5^{\circ}$ to $15^{\circ}$ higher than that of fresh leaves, suggesting that the volume of the protrusions decreased as the water was removed, thus reducing the contact area with the droplet. In the contact angle history test the hysteresis in the leaf tip direction was found to be much lower than that in the leaf petiole direction. This results can be explained that asymmetrical cone - like protrusions had a significant effect on the droplet flow characteristics through contact angle hysteresis experiment.

An experimental study on the behavior of the water hold-up by condensation of a fin-and-tube heat exchanger with regard to the surface characteristics, i.e., contact angle, was conducted. The static and dynamic contact angles were measured, and condensation experiments were conducted. Flow patterns on the fins with different surface characteristics were visualized. Results showed that the static contact angle is proportional to the dynamic contact angle within the range of this study. The water hold-up of the heat exchanger increases as the static or dynamic contact angle of its surfaces increases. Existence of transition of flow patterns was found as the static or dynamic angle increase. Due to the transition in the flow patterns, changes in the gradient of the water hold-up is occurred around the static angle of 8$0^{\circ}C$.

Breakdown characteristics and survival probability of turn-to-turn models were investigated under ac and impulse voltage at 77K. For experiments, two test electrode models were fabricated: One is point contact model and the other is surface contact model. Both are made of copper wrapped by O.025mm thick polyimide film(Kapton). The experimental results were analyzed statistically using Weibull distribution in order to examine the wrapping number effects on voltage-time characteristics under ac voltage as well as under impulse voltage in LN$_{2}$. Also survival analysis were performed according to the Kaplan-Meier method. The breakdown voltages of surface contact model are lower than that of point contact model, because the contact area of surface contact model is wider than that of point contact model. Besides, the shape parameter of point contact model is a little bit larger than that of surface contact model. The time to breakdown t$_{50}$ is decreased as the applied voltage is increased, and the lifetime indices slightly are increased as the number of layers is increased. According to the increasing applied voltage and decreasing wrapping number, the survival probability is increased.

compared and reviewed the water repellency and strength characteristics by controlling the surface stamping size and fine aggregate ratio of cement mortar mixed with water repellent as a method to control the ecological imitation surface structure. As a result of measuring the contact angle, the higher the ratio of fine aggregate, the larger the contact angle. The contact angle increased when the surface structure was changed by stamping, and increased as the stamping size became smaller. In the surface stamping of mesh#150, the contact angle was particularly increased.
