Numerical investigation into particle crushing effects on the shear behavior of gravel

  • This paper presents numerical investigations into the particle crushing effect on the shear properties of gravel under direct shear condition. A novel particle crushing model was developed based on the octahedral shear stress criterion and fragment replacement method. A series of direct shear tests were carried out on unbreakable particles and breakable particles with different strengths. The evolutions of the particle crushing, shear strength, volumetric strain behavior, and contact force fabric during shearing were analyzed. It was observed that the number of crushed particles increased with the increase of the shear displacement and axial pressure and decreased with the particle strength increasing. Moreover, the shear strength and volume dilatancy were obviously decreased with particle crushing. The shear displacement of particles starting to crush was close to that corresponding to the peak shear stress got. Besides, the shear-hardening behavior was obviously affected by the number of crushed particles. A microanalysis showed that due to particle crushing, the contact forces and anisotropy decreased. The mechanism of the particle crushing effect on the shear strength was further clarified in terms of the particle friction and interlock.

  • The bi-material elastic system consisting of the circular hollow cylinder and the infinite elastic medium surrounding this cylinder is considered and it is assumed that on the inner free face of the cylinder a point-located axisymmetric time harmonic force, with respect to the cylinder's axis and which is uniformly distributed in the circumferential direction, acts. The shear-spring type imperfect contact conditions on the interface between the constituents are satisfied. The mathematical formulation of the problem is made within the scope of the exact equations of linear elastodynamics. The focus is on the frequency-response of the interface normal and shear stresses and the influence of the problem parameters, such as the ratio of modulus of elasticity, the ratio of the cylinder thickness to the cylinder radius, and the shear-spring type parameter which characterizes the degree of the contact imperfectness, on these responses. Corresponding numerical results are presented and discussed. In particular, it is established that the character of the influence of the contact imperfection on the frequency response of the interface stresses depends on the values of the vibration frequency of the external forces.

  • The purpose of this study is to assess the mechanical properties of the ceramic abutment with washer. In this study, ceramic abutment were used, tested with $30^{\circ}$ compression load, shear fatigue, adaptation accuracy test(rotation angle, contact interval), removal torque force test, torsional breaking force test. The $30^{\circ}$ compression load was 729 N, the shear fatigue load was 275 N, adaptation accuracy test of rotation angle was within $3^{\circ}$, contact interval within $10{\mu}m$, and removal torque force test value is $18.88N{\cdot}cm$, torsional breaking force test value is $35.52N{\cdot}cm$. Ceramic abutment with a washer fitted have sufficient mechanical strength and may be substituted for titanium abutment.

  • Railway system is today the most efficient way for transportation in many cases in several forms of application. Yet, wear phenomenon, profile evolution, fatigue, fracture, derailment are the major worries (financial and safety) in this system which force significant direct and indirect maintenance costs. To improve the cyclic maintenance procedures and the safety issues, it can be very satisfactory to be informed of the state of wheel/rail interaction with mileage. In present paper, an investigation of the behavior of the shear stresses by logged distance is approached, by implementing the field measurement procedure, in order to determine the real conduct of the most important cause of defects in wheel/rail contact, shear stress. The results coming from a simulation procedure indicate that the amounts of shear stresses are still in high-magnitudes when the wheel and rail are completely worn; even though in simulation based on the laboratory measurements of profile evolutions, the stresses become significantly reduced by logged distance.

  • The present study deals with the numerical analysis of the symmetric contact problem of two bonded layers resting on an elastic half plane compressed with a rigid punch. In this context, Finite Element Method (FEM) based software called ANSYS and ABAQUS are used. It is assumed that the elastic layers have different elastic constants and heights and the external load is applied to the upper elastic layer by means of a rigid stamp. The problem is solved under the assumptions that the contact between two elastic layers, and between the rigid stamp are frictionless, the effect of gravity force is neglected. To validate the constructed model and obtained results a comparison is performed with the analytical results in literature. The numerical results for normal stresses and shear stresses are obtained for various parameters of load, material and geometry and are tabulated and illustrated.

  • The effect of the alignment of the contacting bodies is concerned. Tilting of a body (indenter) is regarded as a mis-alignment. Recently developed method fur evaluating the contact normal traction is introduced and discussed, in which piecewise parabolic profile is considered as a generalized contact profile. Indentation by a wedge with rounded apex is solved as an example problem. In the case of partial slip regime, the variation of shear traction is examined during the closed path of shear force by using the efficient numerical technique. Concentration of the slip region is also investigated. By evaluating the energy dissipation from the contact surface, the effect of the mis-alignment-alignment on wear is discussed.

LM 볼가이드 마찰력의 수학적 모델링 (Mathematical Modeling of Friction Force in LM Ball Guides)

  • Linear motion (LM) ball guides have good accuracy and high efficiency. They are widely applied for precision machinery such as machine tools, semiconductor fabrication machines and robots. However, friction force incurs heat between the balls and grooves. Thermal expansion due to the heat deteriorates stiffness and accuracy of the LM ball guides. For accurate estimation of stiffness and accuracy during the linear motion, friction models of LM ball guides are required. To formulate accurate frictional models of LM ball guides according to load and preload conditions, rolling and viscous frictional analyses have been performed in this paper. Contact loads between balls and grooves are derived from Hertzian contact analysis. Contact angle variation is incorporated for the precision modeling. Viscous friction model is formulated from the shear stress of lubricant and the contact area between balls and grooves. Experiments confirm validity of the developed friction model for various external load and feedrate conditions.

라운딩 펀치에 의한 프레팅 상태에서의 균열 해석 (Crack Analysis under Fretting Condition by Rounded Punch)

  • Surface edge crack subjected to contact stresses is analysed. A punch with corner radii is considered to press the semi-infinite plane. Partial slip problem is solved when a shear force is applied to the punch. Dislocation density function method is used to solve the present mixed mode crack problem. The crack length of positive K1 is examined, which is affected by the ratio of the flat portion to the total width of the punch. Surface traction during one cycle of the shear force is evaluated to simulate the fretting condition. The compliance change of the contact surface is also investigated during the shear cycle. It is found that the crack grows during only a part of the cycle, which may be termed as effective period of crack growing. A design method for restraining the fretting failure is discussed, from which recommendable geometry of the punch is suggested.

Cu 범프와 Sn 범프의 접속구조를 이용한 RF 패키지용 플립칩 공정 (Flip Chip Process for RF Packages Using Joint Structures of Cu and Sn Bumps)

  • Cu pillar 범프를 사용한 플립칩 접속부는 솔더범프 접속부에 비해 칩과 기판사이의 거리를 감소시키지 않으면서 미세피치 접속이 가능하기 때문에, 특히 기생 캐패시턴스를 억제하기 위해 칩과 기판사이의 큰 거리가 요구되는 RF 패키지에서 유용한 칩 접속공정이다. 본 논문에서는 칩에는 Cu pillar 범프, 기판에는 Sn 범프를 전기도금하고 이들을 플립칩 본딩하여 Cu pillar 범프 접속부를 형성 한 후, Sn 전기도금 범프의 높이에 따른 Cu pillar 범프 접속부의 접속저항과 칩 전단하중을 측정하였다. 전기도금한 Sn 범프의 높이를 5 ${\mu}m$에서 30 ${\mu}m$로 증가시킴에 따라 Cu pillar 범프 접속부의 접속저항이 31.7 $m{\Omega}$에서 13.8 $m{\Omega}$로 향상되었으며, 칩 전단하중이 3.8N에서 6.8N으로 증가하였다. 반면에 접속부의 종횡비는 1.3에서 0.9로 저하하였으며, 접속부의 종횡비, 접속저항 및 칩 전단하중의 변화거동으로부터 Sn 전기도금 범프의 최적 높이는 20 ${\mu}m$로 판단되었다.

  • Wear on the tube-to-spring contact is investigated experimentally. The wear is caused by the vibration of the tube while the springs support it. As for the supporting conditions, applied are the contacting normal force (P) of 5 N, just-contact (P = 0 N) and the gap of 0.1 mm. The gap condition is tried far considering the influence of simultaneous impacting and sliding on wear. Results show that the wear volume increases in the order of the gap, the just-contact and the 5 N conditions. This is explained from the contact geometry of the spring, which is convex of smooth contour. The contact shear force is regarded smaller in the case of the gap existence compared with the other conditions. Wear mechanism is considered from SEM observation of the worn surface. The variation of the normal contact traction is analysed using the finite element analysis to estimate the slip displacement range on the contact with consulting the fretting map previously obtained.
