  • The contact roll is often used to regulate the winding tension as well as the entrained air in a wound roli by adjusting the contact force to the winding roll. But the contact force generated by other rolls, like assistant nip rolls, in a winding(or roll changing) process may act as disturbance to the control of the winding tension. In this paper, the mechanism of a roll change process is analyzed. And, the behavior of the contact and the assistant nip rolls are mathematically modeled. A nonlinear PID(NPID) controller is designed to control the winding tension and to reject the effect of disturbance generated by the assistant nip roll on the winding tension variation. Computer simulation study showed that the performance of the suggested NPID controller is improved compared with that of the PID controller in con trolling the winding tension and in rejecting the effect of the disturbance.

  • This study proposes a method for identifying correlations between tension and drop height for sessile droplets in a roll-to-roll processing system. The effect of tension and drop height on the contact angle of a sessile droplet is presented. Design of experiment (DOE) methodology and statistical analysis are used to define a correlation between the process parameters. The contact angle is decreased while increasing tension and drop height. The influence of the tension is less significant on the contact angle compared with the effect of the drop height. However, tension should be considered as a major parameter because it is not easy to fix with roll eccentricity and compensating speed of the driven roll. The results of this study show that the effect of tension on the contact angle of a sessile droplet is more important than drop height because the drop height is fixed when the process systems are determined.

  • Pool boiling experiments are performed within an isolated bubble regime at inclination angles of 0° and 45°. When a bubble grows and departs from the heating surface, the pressure, buoyancy, and surface tension force play important roles. The curvature and base diameter are required to calculate the pressure force, the bubble volume is required to calculate the buoyancy force, and the contact angle and base diameter are required to calculate the surface tension force. The contact angle, base diameter, and volume of the bubbles are evaluated using images captured via a high-speed camera. The surface tension force equation proposed by Fritz is modified with the contact angles obtained in this study. When the bubble grows, the contact angle decreases slowly. However, when the bubble departs, the contact angle rapidly increases owing to necking. At an inclination angle of 0°, the contact angle is calculated as 82.88° at departure. Additionally, the advancing and receding contact angles are calculated as 70.25° and 82.28° at departure, respectively, at an inclination angle of 45°. The dynamic behaviors of bubble growth and departure are discussed with forces by pressure, buoyancy, and surface tension.

  • In a web winding process, the contact roll plays many important roles including air-entrainment control and WIT(Wound In Tension) regulation. The behavior of contact roll significantly affects the winding tension characteristics specifically at the time of contact when the speeds of contact roll and the winding roll are not synchronized. A mathematical model for the web, the winding roll, and the contact roll is derived. By using the model derived, a nonlinear PID(NPID) controller is designed to control the winding tension at the time of contact and separation between the contact roll and the winding roll. Computer simulation study showed that the performance of the winding system with the NPID controller significantly improved compared with that of a system with PID controller.

  • Along with the increase of railway catenary system operation speed to 400 km/h, there have been growing demands for good quality current collection systems that satisfy quality standards as well as criteria for safe working. Retaining uniform elasticity tension of contact wires is essential in maintaining high quality contact between pantograph and OCL (Overhead Contact Line) of current collection systems in high speed railways. Therefore, the tension of contact wire must be kept within tight tolerance limits in both working conditions and adverse weather conditions of catenary system. In accordance with these conditions, this paper presents a real time monitoring system for the tensioning device of the newly installed catenary system on the special route of Honam high speed line for 400 km/h operation. For the verification of the true value of tension of contact wires, we have developed ring-type tensioning sensors which were installed on supporting points of mast which compose the catenary system. According to the field test performed on the Honam high speed line catenary system, variation of tension was measured accurately in real-time.

  • The Lippmann-Young equation has been widely used in electrowetting to predict the contact-angle change of a droplet on a insulating substrate with respect to the externally-applied electrical voltage. The Lippmann-Young equation is derived by assuming a droplet as a perfect conductor, so that the effect of the electrical double layer and the line tension are not taken into account. The validity of the assumption has never been checked before, systematically. In the present investigation, a modified Lippmann-Young equation is derived taking into account of the effect of the electrical double layer and the line tension. To assess their influence on contact-angle change in electrowetting, the electrostatic field around the three-phase contact line is analyzed by solving the Poisson-Boltzmann equation numerically. The validity of the numerical methods is verified by using the past theoretical results on the electrostatic field around a wedge-shaped geometry, which shows fairly good agreement. The results of the present investigation clearly indicate that the effect of the electrical double layer and the line tension is negligible for a millimeter-sized droplet. On the other hand, for a micron-sized droplet, the effect of the line tension can become a dominating factor which controls the contact-angle change in electrowetting.

  • The nonlinear vibration of the thin perforated plate is analyzed in consideration of the V-shaped tension distribution and the effect of wire impact damping. The reduced order FEM model of the tension plate is obtained from dynamic condensation for the mass and stiffness matrices. Tension wire is modeled using the lumped parameter method to effectively describe its contact interactions with the plate. The nonlinear contact-impact model is composed of spring and damper elements, of which parameters are determined from the Hertzian contact theory and the restitution coefficient, respectively. From the evaluation of the computational accuracy and computation time for the deduced impact stiffness and damping coefficient, we determined proper values for the simulation works, accounting for the computational accuracy as well as the computational efficiency. Finally we discussed the results of nonlinear nitration analysis for variations of their design parameters.

  • In this study, nonlinear vibration analysis of the cylindrical orthotropic porous thin plate under V-shaped tension distribution with wire impact damping is considered. We make dynamic model of the plate under the tension using commercial FEM code and reduce the number of its degrees of freedom using dynamic condensation. The dynamic model of wire is obtained as lumped mass model from string equation. And then we analyze the nonlinear vibration of the plate including the impact phenomenon between the plate and the wire using the reduced mass and stiffness matrices of the plate and lumped model of the wire. The contact phenomenon between them can be described by impact contact elements composed of contact stiffness coefficients from Hertzian contact theory and contact damping coefficients from restitution coefficient between them. And we discussed the results of nonlinear vibration analysis for variations of their design parameters.
