Coupling is a mechanical component that transmits rotational force by connecting two shafts. Curvic coupling is widely used in high-performance systems because of its excellent power transmission efficiency and easy machining. However, coupling applications change dynamic behavior by reducing the stiffness of an entire system. Contact surface stiffness is an important parameter that determines the dynamic behavior of a system. In addition, the roughness profile of a contact surface is the most important parameter for obtaining contact stiffness. In this study, we theoretically establish the process of contact and bending stiffness analysis by considering the rough surface contact at Curvic coupling. Surface roughness parameters are obtained from Nayak's random process, and the normal contact stiffness of a contact surface is calculated using the Greenwood and Williamson model in the elastic region and the Jackson and Green model in the elastic-plastic region. The shape of the Curvic coupling contact surface is obtained by modeling a machined shape through an actual machining tool. Based on this modeling, we find the maximum number of gear teeth that can be machined according to the contact angle. Curvic coupling stiffness is calculated by considering the contact angle, and the calculation process is divided into stick and slip conditions. Based on this process, we investigate the stiffness characteristics according to the contact angle.

The aim of this paper was to examine the continuous and discontinuous contact problems between the functionally graded (FG) layer pressed with a uniformly distributed load and homogeneous half plane using an analytical method and FEM. The FG layer is made of non-homogeneous material with an isotropic stress-strain law with exponentially varying properties. It is assumed that the contact at the FG layer-half plane interface is frictionless, and only the normal tractions can be transmitted along the contacted regions. The body force of the FG layer is considered in the study. The FG layer was positioned on the homogeneous half plane without any bonds. Thus, if the external load was smaller than a certain critical value, the contact between the FG layer and half plane would be continuous. However, when the external load exceeded the critical value, there was a separation between the FG layer and half plane on the finite region, as discontinuous contact. Therefore, there have been some steps taken in this study. Firstly, an analytical solution for continuous and discontinuous contact cases of the problem has been realized using the theory of elasticity and Fourier integral transform techniques. Then, the problem modeled and two-dimensional analysis was carried out by using ANSYS package program based on FEM. Numerical results for initial separation distance and contact stress distributions between the FG layer and homogeneous half plane for continuous contact case; the start and end points of separation and contact stress distributions between the FG layer and homogeneous half plane for discontinuous contact case were provided for various dimensionless quantities including material inhomogeneity, distributed load width, the shear module ratio and load factor for both methods. The results obtained using FEM were compared with the results found using analytical formulation. It was found that the results obtained from analytical formulation were in perfect agreement with the FEM study.
During bolted flange assembly, the contact stiffness of some areas of the joint surface may be low due to the elastic interaction. In order to improve the contact stiffness at the lowest position of bolted flange, the correlation model between the initial bolt pre-tightening force and the contact stiffness of bolted flange is established in this paper. According to the stress distribution model of a single bolt, an assumption of uniform local contact stiffness of bolted flange is made. Moreover, the joint surface is divided into the compressive stress region and the elastic interaction region. Based on the fractal contact theory, the relationship model of contact stiffness and contact force of the joint surface is proposed. Considering the elastic interaction coefficient method, the correlation model of the initial bolt pre-tightening force and the contact stiffness of bolted flange is established. This model can be employed to reverse determine the tightening strategy of the bolt group according to working conditions. As a result, this provides a new idea for the digital design of tightening strategy of bolt group for contact stiffness of bolted flange. The tightening strategy of the bolted flange is optimized by using the correlation model of initial bolt pre-tightening force and the contact stiffness of bolted flange. After optimization, the average contact stiffness of the joint surface increased by 5%, and the minimum contact stiffness increased by 6%.
This study investigated the status of soft contact lens wear in college students. The results were as follows: 1. The most prevalent age of initial contact lens wear was 19 years or 20 years, with an age distribution in females from as early as 10 years to 20 years. 2. For almost all subjects, the test clinic for the contact lens wear assessment and purchase of the contact lenses was an optical shop. 3. The main advantage for most male subjects was use for sports, whereas most female subjects used contact lenses for cosmetic reasons. 4. The most common side-effects experienced due to contact lens wear were red eye, foreign body sensation, and eye pain. 5. The most frequently reported eye disease caused by contact lens wear was conjunctivitis, with only few subjects experiencing keratitis. 6. Following treatment for the side effects of contact lens wear, most subjects hoped to re-use the previous contact lenses, some subjects wanted to change to new contact lenses, and others subjects refused further contact lens wear.

Ni/Ti/Al multilayer system ('/'denotes the deposition sequence) was tested for low-resistance ohmic contact formation to Al-implanted p-type 4H-SiC. Ni 30 nm / Ti 50 nm / Al 300 nm layers were sequentially deposited by e-beam evaporation on the 4H-SiC samples which were implanted with Al (norminal doping concentration = $4\times10^{19}cm^{-3}$) and then annealed at $1700^{\circ}C$ for dopant activation. Rapid thermal anneal (RTA) temperature for ohmic contact formation was varied in the range of $840\sim930^{\circ}C$. Specific contact resistances were extracted from the measured current vs. voltage (I-V) data of linear- and circular transfer length method (TLM) patterns. In constrast to Ni contact, Ni/Ti/Al contact shows perfectly linear I-V characteristics, and possesses much lower contact resistance of about $2\sim3\times10^{-4}\Omega{\cdot}cm^2$ even after low-temperature RTA at $840^{\circ}C$, which is about 2 orders of magnitude smaller than that of Ni contact. Therefore, it was shown that RTA temperature for ohmic contact formation can be lowered to at least $840^{\circ}C$ without significant compromise of contact resistance. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated the existence of intermetallic compounds of Ni and Al as well as $NiSi_{1-x}$, but characteristic peaks of $Ti_{3}SiC_2$, a probable narrow-gap interfacial alloy responsible for low-resistance Ti/Al ohmic contact formation, were not detected. Therefore, Al in-diffusion into SiC surface region is considered to be the dominant mechanism of improvement in conduction behavior of Ni/Ti/Al contact.

This study evaluates the magnitudes and distributions of contact tangential forces with the swaging depth of punch acting at the contact surfaces between a rotor core slot and a Cu bar during a sequential rotor core swaging process. The effects of the core slot shape on the magnitudes and distributions of the total contact forces were investigated to improve the productivity of the rotor core swaging process. Parametric elastic-plastic numerical analyses were performed using simplified two-dimensional cyclic symmetric plane strain models to evaluate the contact force distributions at the contact surfaces. The numerical analysis results show that the total contact tangential forces increased by about 55% with the adjacent Cu bar swaging process. The length of the core slot is a dominant factor in the core slot design as result of the increased total contact tangential forces during the swaging process of the rotor core.

The cycloid reducer has very high efficiency, high ratios, high stiffness and small size, in comparison with a conventional gear mechanism, which makes it an attractive candidate for limited space and precision application such as industrial robot. There are several publications on analysis and design of the cycloid reducer, however, it was assumed that the contact stiffness of pin rollers and cycloid disk is constant regardless of their contact geometry. Moreover, the torsional stiffness of the cycloid reducer couldn't be calculated due to the assumption. In this paper, we present a new procedure of calculating torsional stiffness of the cycloid reducer using Hertz contact theory. First, conventional force analysis of the cycloid reducer is briefly reviewed. Then, iterative numerical calculation procedure of the contact stiffness is proposed based on the Hertz contact theory where the contact stiffness depends on the contact force. In addition, total torsional stiffness of the cycloid reducer is estimated considering its rolling element bearing stiffness. The torsional stiffness of the cycloid reducer is dominated by the rolling element bearing stiffness since the contact stiffness of the cycloid disk is too large.

Ball reducer with waved grooves has many advantages over other reducers for the high-reduction ratios, low noise and low energy loss, etc. The mechanism of force transmission is very similar to that of cam and follower in automobile valve train system especially in the contact geometry. In this study, we have investigated the traces of contact between ball and outer race and the working behaviors with a certain reduction ratio. In order to verify the contact behaviors between ball and outer race, which determines the critical endurance life the contact velocity and load are computed for a cycle. During some period of a cycle, the contact velocity reverses its direction very suddenly, which causes undesirable endurance performance of this machinery. From the computational investigation in this work, we hope to predict similar contact damages in other machinery due to this kind of contact behaviors, which is very common in many contact phenomena.
Many parameters influence the frictional behavior of steel sheet during stamping. The contact pressure between a die and a sheet during stamping is one of them. Thus, this parameter is investigated for high strength steel (HSS) sheets, which are widely used for auto body panels due to their potential for weight reduction. Since HSS extend the limits of contact pressure for mild steel, the effect of this parameter on friction cannot be ignored. To investigate the influence of contact pressure on the frictional behavior of steel sheets, a flat type of friction test was conducted on three different steel sheets under various contact pressures. For bare steel sheets, the curve representing the relationship between contact pressure and friction coefficient exhibits a U shape. Coated steel sheets show a similar tendency except at low contact pressure. For these materials, when the contact pressure is very low, the friction coefficient slightly increases with pressure before it starts to decrease. The test results show that the effect of contact pressure on frictional behavior of steel sheet is not negligible even for contact pressures that are lower than the strength of HSS sheet.
