Construction workers are engaged in many activities that may expose them to serious hazards, such as falling, unguarded machinery, or being struck by heavy construction equipment. Despite extensive research in building information modeling (BIM) for safety management, current approaches, detecting safety issues after design completion, may limit the opportunities to prevent predictable and potential accidents when decisions of building materials and systems are made. In this respect, this research proposes a proactive approach to detecting safety issues from the early design phase. This research aims to explore accident precursors and integrate them into BIM for tracking safety hazards during the design development process. Accident precursors can be identified from construction incident reports published by OSHA using a text mining technique. Through BIM-integrated accident precursors, construction safety hazards can be identified during the design phase. The results will contribute to supporting a successful transition from the design stage to the construction stage that considers a safe construction workplace. This will advance the body of knowledge about construction safety management by elucidating a hypothesis that safety hazards can be detected during the design phase involving decisions about materials, building elements, and equipment. In addition, the proactive approach will help the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry eliminate occupational safety hazards before near-miss situations appear on construction sites.

Construction project consists of several stages such as planning, design, construction, operation/maintain, etc. Decisions made in the planning and design stage have a significant impact on the construction and operation/maintain stages. Identifying key resources contributing to duration and cost of design alternatives is an important measure to achieve effective coordination between design and construction. This study proposes a method which finds an optimal design alternative by taking into account of resource planning, expected duration, and cost in construction stage. Base on literature review relative to the assessment of design alternatives, a method which predicts required resources, duration, and cost of the design alternative is established. Then, a method that identifies an optimal design alternative based on the preference of a certain project criteria is developed. Finally, a case study is presented.

The widespread of IT technology caused a remarkable change in many industries and the construction industry is also one of them being influenced in the form of CIC(Computer Integrated Construction) and BIM(Building Information Modeling). Construction projects have many participants from various disciplines involved throughout the entire process. Therefore the success of the project greatly depend on the efficiency of decision-making using the information generated from each process stage. Looking from this aspect, the greatest potential value lies in the planning and pre-design stage when considering the construction life cycle. In this paper, we propose a project on developing a 3D object oriented simulation system for supporting the pre design phase. We define the needs for such system through previous case studies and suggest a to be process model. Finally we anticipate the effects that the project will eventually contribute to the construction industry.
Since construction projects are large and complex, it is especially important to provide concurrent construction process to BIM models with construction automation. In particular, the schematic Quantity Take-Off (QTO) estimation on the BIM models is a strategy, which can be used to assist decision making in just minutes, because 70-80% of construction costs are determined by designers' decisions in the early design stage. This paper suggests a QTO process and a QTO prototype system within the building frame of Open BIM to improve the low reliability of estimation in the early design stage. The research consists of the following four steps: (1) analyzing Level of Detail (LOD) at the early design stage to apply to the QTO process and system, (2) BIM modeling for Open BIM based QTO, (3) checking the quality of the BIM model based on the checklist for applying to QTO and improving constructability, and (4) developing and verifying a QTO prototype system. The proposed QTO system is useful for improving the reliability of schematic estimation through decreasing risk factors and shortening time required.

LNG plant projects tend to be implemented in overseas owing to its characteristics, so their project management scheme is somewhat different from those of general projects. Value chain in a LNG plant project includes exploration/production of gases, physical liquefaction/chemical conversion processes, transportation and storage. Key factors in the chain include liquefaction process (including ultra-low temperature liquefaction) to convert natural gas into liquid materials or fuel, and Front End Engineering Design (FEED) package, as well as Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) technology comprising control, operation and construction. Success of a complex LNG plant project implemented in overseas depends on decision-making process in project management. Accordingly, to develop a decision-making model in of plant construction, the study extracted none factors in project management by EPC stage and assessed importance of each factor. The result showed that items in both project management and project risk management are important. Especially, the study developed a decision-making model in the construction stage of a LNG plant project based on the project management factors and importance assessment. The developed decision-making model would lay groundwork in building a decision-making system in construction stage of project management.

The PSC box bridge constructed of concrete, reinforcing bar and tendon is a complex structure that exhibits tension cracks, nonlinear behaviour of steel and time dependent behaviour of concrete. The frame element is commonly used for construction stage analysis PSC bridges. However, the frame element does not show sufficient information when in the curved PSC box bridges. For the case of curved PSC bridges, the deformations in the inner and outer web are different. In this case, different jacking forces are required in the inner and outer webs. However, it is impossible to calculate different jacking forces if we use the frame element for construction stage analysis. In order to overcome this problem, the use of the shell element is essential for a three-dimensional construction stage analysis of PSC bridges. In the following, the formulation of a Quasi-conforming shell element and its application of PSC box girder bridge analysis are presented.

Due to the increasing concern about climate change, efforts to reduce environmental load are continuously being made in construction industry, and life cycle assessment (LCA) is being presented as an effective method to assess environmental load. Since LCA requires information on construction quantity used for environmental load estimation, however, it is not being utilized in the environmental review at the initial design stage where it is difficult to obtain such information. In this study, a construction quantity computation system based on the standard section was developed for the drainage facilities of the road and utilized in the model to calculate the environmental load. This model can estimate the environmental load by calculating the amount of resources required for LCA using only the information available at the initial design stage. To verify the validity of the model, five validation cases were applied and compared with the unit estimation model and the multiple regression analysis model. As a result, it is confirmed that the mean absolute error rate is 9.94%, which is relatively accurate and effective model in the initial design stage.

This paper concerns the study of absorption refrigeration and heat pump cycle to use sewage. Simulation analysis on the double-effect absorption refrigeration cycle with parallel and two-stage heat pump cycle has been performed. The working fluid is Lithium Bromide and water solution. The absorption refrigeration cycle use sewage as a cooling water for the absorber and condenser, and absorption refrigeration cycle does that as a chilled water for the evaporator of the first stage cycle. And the two-stage cycle consists of coupling double-effect with parallel and single effect cycle so that the first stage absorber and condenser produces heating water to evaporate refrigerant in the evaporator of the second stage. The effects of operating variables such as a absorber temperature on the coefficient of performance have been studied for absorption refrigeration and heat pump cycle.
