  • It was difficult to apply conventional excavation methods in some sections from Seoul to Pusan high speed rail road construction of 1 lot 2, due to highway concrete road, gas pipe, water pipe and nearby factories with automatic control system machine. To excavate safely and efficiently in these sections new blast patterns were employed within allowable blast vibration level, by test blast and controlled vibration by sequential blast. Behaviors of the rock mass including convergence and displacement around tunnel were measured with construction works and the crack width in concrete wall was also monitored for controlling allowable limits. The results can be summarized as follow : 1. The allowable blast vibration level in structure site is less 1.0cm/sec for highway concrete, 0.5 cm/sec for gas pipe, water pipe and building housing and 0.3 cm/sec for automatic control system machine. 2. The convergence displacement, single rod extensometer and multi rod extensometer around tunnel and cracks in concrete wall were measured, it was confirmed that the measured values were converged within allowable level. 3. The empirical formular of ground vibrations with 90% confidence lines for PD-3 was given as follow. $$V_{90%}=45.549({\frac{D}{\sqrt{W}}})^{-1.353}$$

  • The west express way is notorious for extremely heavy traffic area in the west of Seoul, South Korea. Hence, the city government recently initiated a new underground BTO (Build-Transfer-Operate) road project to solve traffic congestion and a high construction cost. The proposed underground express road being designed is the first double-level tunnel ever designed in South Korea and using Conventional tunnelling method (NATM). A total length of tunnel for light vehicles is 10.91km long including both open cut structures and concrete lining with middle-deck in bored tunnel. There are also 4 ventilation shafts for ventilation and evacuation on emergency. Many design issues had been aroused during the preliminary design phase and detail design phase is currently going on. This paper discusses design focuses including excavation methods, ground water issues, a deck slab installation, and a construction cost etc. for the double level road tunnel design of urban area.

  • It is reported that there is a limit in increasing heavy-weight impact noise isolation performance of the load bearing wall system apartments to meet the regulation of the Ministry of Construction and Transportation (MOCT). To increase the heavy-weight impact noise isolation performance, improvement in structural systems such as increasing concrete slab thickness and application of rahmen structure were proposed. In this study floor impact sound levels from toil apartments with two rahmen structure multi-story residential buildings were measured before the construction of the buildings finished. Measurements were made at living room and two bedrooms at each apartment when the finishing processes were finished. The average value of light-weight impact sound level from ten apartments was 56dB (L'$\sub$n,Aw/). The heavy-weight impact sound level was 44dB (L'$\sub$i.Fmax.Aw/) and the impact sound level of the impact ball was 41dB(L'$\sub$i.Fmax.Aw/), As a result floor impact noises at the rahmen structure system were lower than the regulation level.

  • This study aims to evaluate the behavior of poorly-compacted raised reservoir levee with water level raising by using centrifugal model test. From the test results, it seems that the hydraulic fracturing at the core of the raised reservoir levee with low degree of compaction possibly occurs due to the drastical increase of pore water pressure by water level raising. Additionally, the continuous infiltration may induce crack and/or sinkhole on the surface of the poorly-compacted raised reservoir levee owing to the increase of the subsidences at the crown and the front side of that. Therefore, reasonable construction management for the compaction of the raised reservoir levee is needed.

  • Sand dam is a successful water harvesting method in mountainous areas with ephemeral rivers. The success is dependent on several factors including material type, hydrogeology, slope, riverbed thickness, groundwater recharge, and streamflow. In this study, the effect of a sand dam on the groundwater level in the Chuncheon area, South Korea was assessed using the MODFLOW model. Using the model, multiple scenarios were tested to understand the groundwater head before and after the construction of the sand dam. The effect of groundwater abstraction before and after sand dam construction and the sand material type were also assessed. The results show, the groundwater level increases substantially after the application of a sand dam. The comparison of model outputs, simulated groundwater head before and after sand dam application with and without pumping well, shows a clear difference in the head. The material type has also an effect on the groundwater head. As the conductivity of the material increases, the head showed a significant rise.

  • The examples of developing a building site after the Woongjin period are mainly found in temple sites, tile-roofed building sites of unidentified features, and palace remains including the pavilion site with the river in the front(임류각지) inside the Castle of Gongsan, Gongjoo. In case of the Hanseong period, a glimpase of the features has gained in Poongnab mud castle and Mongchon mud castle, but the excavated relics are not yet enough to make some date out of them. After the Woongjin period of Baejae, the earth-ramming development method was used mostly to construct a building site, which is divided into horizontal and slant raising of the ground level. Both are used simultaneously, but there are the significant differences in the way of raising the ground level between them. Particularly, in case of the Wanggoong-ri relics in Iksan, the ground level was raised in a narrow line slantly, which is differentiated from other slant raising of the ground level, and its time of construction also is after that of others. In addition, the board-building development method used for narrow space is usually found in the remains since the seventh century. However, there are not enough the relics of Baekjae to reveal the whole aspect of building site development. It should be studied later through the subsequent excavation and research.

  • Particles or deposit formed by corrosion of the pipe material bring about bad influences on the heating systems with inconvenience, energy loss and so on. In order to obtain the non-corrosive environments, the circulation hot water should properly be treated in several ways to satisfy one or more conditions of the followings: suitable pH-level, low hardness, low oxygen content, low conductivity, low level of chlorides and sulphur compounds and low level of solid particles. This experimental study was carried out to develope the new guidelines on the optimal water quality and directions for water quality management in heating systems. As results, it was recommended that the heating water be maintained pH-level not less than 8, hardness contents as $CaCO_3$ no more than 50 mg/L, turbidity no more than 10 NTU and T-Fe contents 1 mg/L below.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the level of exposure to volatile organic compounds for different kinds of households in apartments or houses and analyze the relation between atopy-related symptoms and concentration of volatile organic compounds in order to improve indoor air quality and start to build a process to prevent environmental diseases. Method: From July 2010 to November 2010, TVOC concentration levels were measured and analyzed in 402 general households and 236 weak households, totalling 638 households. Residents were asked to fill out a survey on environmental disease. All resources were analyzed using SPSS 12.0 program. Result: In comparing the differences in concentration levels of volatile organic compounds for different types of households, including existing apartments and houses, the type of housing did not affect the concentration level of volatile organic compounds, but the relevance with skin trouble, diagnosed atopy, and atopy systems all had statistical similarities. Moreover, above-limit volatile organic compounds showed statistical relevance with amount of ventilation, time of construction, skin trouble, diagnosed atopy and atopy symptoms. Conclusion: The study concludes that as the time of construction recedes further into the past and as the amount of ventilation is higher, the exposure level to volatile organic compounds was lower and the group that were suffering from atopy symptoms had higher exposure to volatile organic compounds.

  • There are many countermeasures collected by field experts, safety managers with their subjective decisions, without analysis. Subcontractor does not know which one of those can be more defective countermeasures. More weighted countermeasures should be taken for subcontractor's economical aspects. But there are almost no measures with useful weight so that subcontractors can select some as they need more effective even though there are not many measures at construction sites. AHP technique has been introduced into the analysis of counter measures for subcontractor. Countermeasures which car collected from field-experienced safety engineers have been weighed with frequency rate saying how many responders selected. And then, they are analyzed by AHP Technique for making out relative important level of the countermeasures, by each step such as Direct, Indirect, Management level, and policy level, quantitatively. AHP level in the study is composed of two stories, not three stories, in order to make respondents easier when they are asked. At least 15-year-experienced expert are asked for AHP questionnaire.
