Profession and strategy of BIM managers in Japan

  • Building Information Modeling (BIM) comes to be implemented into architectural design, construction, and maintenance in Japan in order to convert design information thoughout a construction project. However, various problems are taking place in data transaction. It is not also clear about the role and the responsibility of the architects and the enginners in charge.There is a movement to establish a BIM manager as a general coordinator concerning BIM in Singapore and other countries, though it is not yet popular in Japan. This paper deals a BIM manager as a new profession in a construction project. The function and skills necessary to a BIM manager is analyzed, and the strategy of Japanese general contractors is discussed. General contractors from Japan are operating BIM in Singapore compatible with open system of supply chain. This style is different from the one in Japan even they belong to the same company. In this paper it is analyzed based on the survey in detail.

  • Virtual reality (VR) technology for construction project includes 3D CAD application and 4D CAD system for visualizing construction schedule data. 3D CAD application is more important in the design phase and 4D CAD system is effective tool in the construction phase. This study suggests a methodology to develop VR functions that can be used for project life cycle. The results of this study includes composition algorithms to make VR systems such as bird's eye view system, VR drawings system, VR telepresence system and VR risk management system. Those methodologies can be used for integrated VR system with nD CAD object.

  • 본 연구에서는 분산된 시스템 안에서 네트워크를 이용하여 다량의 자료와 데이터를 동시에 공유할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 원격지에서도 실시간으로 실험이 가능한 건설실험시설의 분산공유에 따른 실질적인 연구현황과 이에 따른 문제점을 그리드컴퓨팅을 이용하여 분석하였다. 이로써, 향후 건설실험시설의 인프라 구축에 있어 분산공유에 대한 데이터의 처리와 공유를 가능하게 하는 시스템구축의 실질적인 방향을 제시하고자 하며, 분산된 다양한 데이터를 다수의 사용자에게 동시에 공유할 수 있는 건설실험시설의 인프라를 구축하는데 기여하고자 한다.

  • 본 연구는 시설물의 2D 건설도면과 공간 DB 갱신기술을 활용하여 시설물 유지관리의 체계적이고 효율적으로 수행하기 위한 방안 제시를 목적으로 한다. 기존의 유지관리 시스템 운영 및 업무 수행시에는 시설물 건설도면 정보의 활용이 미비한 실정이다. 또, 시설물 관리주체에서 운영 중인 유지관리 시스템 조사 분석을 통해 시설물 유지 보수에 대한 이력과 유지관리 시 얻어진 시설물 건설도면 정보의 DB 갱신의 관리가 체계적으로 수행되지 않는 문제점과 시설물 내 외부 위치정보의 부재에 대한 유지관리 업무의 효율성 저하 등에 대한 문제점을 도출하였다. 이를 바탕으로 기존의 시설물 2D 건설도면과 공간 DB 갱신 기술을 활용한 유지관리 이력 및 정보의 체계적인 관리와 시설물 위치정보 제공을 통한 효율적인 업무 수행을 위한 방안을 제시한다.

철근 이음조정률의 개선을 위한 설계견적 수량과 현장시공 정산 수량의 비교분석 연구 (Comparison of the quantity estimations from the design phase and the settlement quantities of construction field to improve the extra rates of bar splice)

  • LH has been using ultra high strength reinforcing bars (SD500 and SD600), since 2011. Such a change requires an adjustment of the old extra rates of bar splice to reflect use of ultra high strength reinforcing bars, as these rates had been set based on SD400 bars. It is particularly difficult to calculate precisely rebar lap-splice locations for large areas, such as those in apartment buildings. This research aims to adjust the extra rates of bar splice to reflect a reasonable rate; the rebar lap-splice length is not an exact estimation, but instead, an extra rates of bar splice is set and the rebar lap-splice length is increased by 2% (D 10) - 7% (025) depending on the bar size. The subjects of this study are LH apartments undergoing frame construction. We studied the quantity estimations from the design drawings, and analyzed the settlement quantities of construction field. The results of the study revealed that, when each of the quantities are analyzed, consider adjusting the extra rates of bar splice of some rebar to 1% - 3.5%. This was caused by an overuse of reinforcing bars in onsite construction and the use of supporting bars that have not been reflected in the documents, among other reasons. Based on the results of our study, an improvement plan for the current extra rates of bar splice seems to be necessary, cutting or raising the rate depending on the analysis of the data. Through this study, we expect to contribute to the calculation of reasonable construction costs, improvements in the quality of rebar work, and improvements in the capacity of design techniques for apartment buildings.

스마트 건설기술의 활용이 프로젝트 성과에 미치는 효과성 분석 (Effectiveness Analysis of the Use of Smart Technology on Construction Project Performance)

  • The slowdown of the global economic market due to the pandemic is causing the global construction market to stagnate, and the use of smart construction technology is drawing attention as one of the main alternatives to overcome this problem. In fact, a number of previous studies have been published that smart construction technologies such as building information modeling and drones can contribute to project performance improvement, such as productivity improvement and cost reduction. However, previous studies focus on the application direction and technical effectiveness of smart construction technology, so the analysis in terms of the contribution that the application of the technology has to the project performance is insufficient. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to focus on the effectiveness aspect of the application of smart construction technology on the project performance. The results of this study are expected to be able to be used as basic data for establishing policies related to the activation of smart construction technology promoted by the government and setting the direction for the use of smart construction technology by stakeholders.

A Study on Construction Site of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) System Model for Cloud Computing BIM Service

  • Recently BIM technology has been expanded for using in construction project. However its spread has been delayed than the initial expectations, due to the high-cost of BIM infrastructure development, the lack of regulations, the lack of process and so forth. In construction site phase, especially the analysis of current research trend about IT technologies, virtualization and BIM service, data exchange such as drawing, 3D model, object data, properties using cloud computing and virtual server system is defined as a most successful solution. The purpose of this study is enable the cloud computing BIM server to provide several main function such as edit a model, 3D model viewer and checker, mark-up, snapshot in high-performance quality by proper design of VDI system. Concurrent client connection performance is a main technical index of VDI. Through test-bed server client, developed VDI system's multi-connect control will be evaluated. The performance-test result of BIM server VDI will effect to development direction of cloud computing BIM service for commercialization.

건설도면의 GIS 데이터 변환을 위한 건물외곽선 단순화기법 비교 연구 (Comparative Study on the Building Outline Simplification Algorithms for the Conversion of Construction Drawings to GIS data)

  • 본 연구에서는 건설도면 CAD 자료를 활용하여 수치지도의 건물데이터를 수정, 갱신하기 위한 과정 중 건설도면의 건물외곽선을 추출하여 수치지도의 건물데이터 수준으로 일반화하는 단계에서의 선형 단순화 알고리듬을 비교 분석하였다. 특히 단순화 결과가 수치지도 작성내규에 부합하는지 여부에 중점을 두어 비교분석을 실시하였다. 선형 단순화 알고리듬은 가장 널리 이용되고 있는 Douglas-Peucker 알고리듬, Lang 알고리듬, Reumann-Witkam 알고리듬, Opheim 알고리듬을 적용하여 비교하였으며 분석방법으로는 각 절점이 수치지도 작성내규를 만족하는 비율과 시각적 분석, 절점 수, 총길이, 면적 변화율을 이용하였다. 분석 결과 수치지도 작성내규 만족도 측면에서 Lang 알고리듬과 Douglas-Peucker 알고리듬이 다소 우수한 결과를 보여주고 있으나 전반적으로 50~60% 수준의 만족도를 보이고 있어 국내 수치지도의 건물데이터를 작성하기 위한 선형 단순화 기법으로는 한계가 있는 것으로 나타났으며 이를 만족시키기 위한 선형 단순화 알고리듬의 개발이 필요하다고 판단된다.

Investigation on Uncertainty in Construction Bid Documents

  • Construction bid documents contain various errors or discrepancies giving rise to uncertainties. The errors/discrepancies/ambiguities in the bid document, if not identified and clarified before the bid, may cause dispute and conflict between the contracting parties. Given the fact that bid document is a major resource in estimating construction costs, inaccurate information in bid document can result in over/under estimating. Thus, any questions from bidders related to the errors in the bid document should be clarified by employers before bid submission. This study aims to examine the pre-bid queries, i.e., pre-bid request for information (RFI), from state DoTs of the United States to investigate error types most frequently encountered in bid documents. For the study, around 200 pre-bids RFI were collected from state DoTs and were classified into several error types (e.g., coordination error, errors in drawings). The analysis of the data showed that errors in bill of quantities is the most frequent error in the bid documents followed by errors in drawing. The study findings addressed uncertainty types in construction bid documents that should be checked during a bid process, and, in a broader sense, it will contribute to advancing the construction management body of knowledge by clarifying and classifying bid risk factors at an early stage of construction projects.

인공지능 기반 플랜트 도면 내 심볼 객체 자동화 검출 (Automatic Recognition of Symbol Objects in P&IDs using Artificial Intelligence)

  • P&ID(Piping and Instrument Diagram)는 플랜트의 장치 및 계장 정보를 집약적으로 담고 있는, 엔지니어링 핵심도면이다. 한 장의 P&ID에는 심볼로 표현된 수백 여개의 정보들이 존재하며, 이에 대한 디지털 전산화 작업이 수작업으로 진행되고 있어 많은 인력과 시간이 소요된다. 기존 연구들은 CNN 모델을 이용하여 도면 객체 검출에 성공하였으나, 도면 한 장당 약 30분, 인식률은 90% 정도로 현장에서 구현하기에는 부족한 성능이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 영역 검출과 객체 인식을 동시에 처리하는 1-stage 객체 검출 알고리즘을 제안하였다. 이미지 레이블링 오픈소스 툴을 이용하여 학습 데이터를 구축하고 딥러닝 모델 학습을 통해 도면 내 심볼 이미지 인식 방법을 제안한다.
