  • Construction sites are characterized by dangerous situations and environments that cause fatal accidents. Potential risk detection needs to be improved by continuously monitoring site conditions. However, the current labor-intensive inspection practice has many limitations in monitoring dangerous conditions at construction sites. Computer vision technology that can quickly analyze and collect site conditions from images has been in the spotlight as a solution. Nonetheless, inspection results obtained via computer vision are still stored and managed in centralized systems vulnerable to tampering with information by the central node. Blockchain has been used as a reliable and efficient decentralized information management system. Despite its potential, only limited research has been conducted integrating computer vision and blockchain. Therefore, to solve the current safety management problems, the authors propose a framework for construction site inspection that integrates object detection and blockchain network, enabling efficient and reliable remote inspection. Object detection is applied to enable the automatic analysis of site safety conditions. As a result, the workload of safety managers can be reduced with inspection results stored and distributed reliably through the blockchain network. In addition, errors or forgery in the inspection process can be automatically prevented and verified through a smart contract. As site safety conditions are reliably shared with project participants, project participants can remotely inspect site conditions and make safety-related decisions in trust.

  • In construction operation, the temporary structure is used to support designed facilities or to provide work spaces for construction activities. Since the structure is used only during the construction operation, the operation may be given insufficient attention. The contractor is likely to try to save cost on the material and labor cost. This contractor's behavior frequently leads to construction accidents. In order to prevent accidents from the failure, the operation should be carefully monitored for identifying the effect of dynamics in the surrounding site area. Otherwise, any unexpected adversary effect could result in a very costly construction failure. This study presents the feasibility of the ubiquitous sensor network (USN) technology in collecting construction data during the construction operation of earth retaining walls. The study is based on the result at the Construction System Integration Laboratory (CSIL) at the Pusan National University. A USN-based system has been developed for monitoring the behavior of the temporary structure of earth retaining walls. The data collected from the sensors were used to understand the behavior of the temporary structure. The result of this study will be used in increasing the safety during the construction operation of retaining walls.

  • Unsafe behavior is one of the major causes of construction accidents. Managing the behavior of workers in real-time is difficult and requires huge manpower. In this paper, a new real-time locating framework is proposed to improve safety management by collecting and analyzing data describing the behavior of workers to identify habits that may lead to accidents. The aim of the study is to identify working habits of workers based on their location history. Location data is used to compare with that of other workers and equipment. The results indicate that the reuse of real-time location data can provide extra safety information for safety management and that the proposed system has the potential to prevent struck-by accidents and caught-in between accidents by predicting unwanted interaction between workers and equipment. This adds to current research aimed at automating construction safety to the point where the continuous monitoring, managing and protection of site workers on site is possible.

  • Structural health monitoring (SHM) of civil infrastructure using fiber Bragg grating sensor networks (FBGSNs) has received significant public attention in recent years. However, there is currently little research on the health-monitoring technology of high-piled wharfs in coastal ports using the fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor technique. The benefits of FBG sensors are their small size, light weight, lack of conductivity, resistance corrosion, multiplexing ability and immunity to electromagnetic interference. Based on the properties of high-piled wharfs in coastal ports and servicing seawater environment and the benefits of FBG sensors, the SHM system for a high-piled wharf in the Tianjin Port of China is devised and deployed partly using the FBG sensor technique. In addition, the health-monitoring parameters are proposed. The system can monitor the structural mechanical properties and durability, which provides a state-of-the-art mean to monitor the health conditions of the wharf and display the monitored data with the BIM technique. In total, 289 FBG stain sensors, 87 FBG temperature sensors, 20 FBG obliquity sensors, 16 FBG pressure sensors, 8 FBG acceleration sensors and 4 anode ladders are installed in the components of the back platform and front platform. After the installation of some components in the wharf construction site, the good signal that each sensor measures demonstrates the suitability of the sensor setup methods, and it is proper for the full-scale, continuous, autonomous SHM deployment for the high-piled wharf in the costal port. The South 27# Wharf SHM system constitutes the largest deployment of FBG sensors for wharf structures in costal ports to date. This deployment demonstrates the strong potential of FBGSNs to monitor the health of large-scale coastal wharf structures. This study can provide a reference to the long-term health-monitoring system deployment for high-piled wharf structures in coastal ports.

  • In the construction project, the efforts to use IT for efficient management and improvement of productivity is gradually increasing. For instance, the cite management model with 3D CAD and RFID shows one of efforts this model define and systematize a variety of data occurred each work unit(design, material and process management information, etc). However, so far, there has been the problem monitoring the site due to the an inaccurate data and low-practice which people should input in manual. In this paper, we would like to establish the data for real time monitoring system with data inputting automatically from RTPM system and the site, and analyze the relationship between tables consist of similar data through RED Diagram.

  • In the recent years, the incidence of abandoned concrete roads have been increasing rapidly due to road improvements and facilities route construction, these abandoned expressway and unused roads are scattered throughout the country but the management system is not clear, they does not be an effectively managed because there is no maintenance cost. In response to these social concern and expectation, the Korea Expressway Corporation that is management authority of the expressway is developing policy initiatives and various projects to restore the closed road to ecological for eco-friendly projects of the existing expressway. And as part of these projects, Hwanggan IC unmanaged abandoned concrete roads restoration project was done and it was conducting monitoring for ecological restoration that is not one-off but sustainable. After test construction over seven years at the time, test construction of four ways enforced but the boundaries have become blurred over time. And Pinus koraiensis, Callicarpa dichotoma and Sorbaria stellipilla var. typica planted in the site are dominating, else Amorpha fruticosa and Indigofera pseudotinctoria sowed are dominating. Invasive species is that Robinia pseudoacacia was growing in the colony. Over monitoring result time, the vegetation was taking root and the ecosystem was being restore. But the disturbance of vegetation happens due to planting of tree species that doesn't fit in the restoration area and advent of ecosystem Disturbing Species. The study will be providing a basic data that identify change of plant environment by monitoring of the site and soil environment during June to November 2016 and secure an objective evaluation data by analyzing the effects of ecological restoration for revegetation test bed evaluation for ecological restoration of expressway in ecological restoration construction in later.

  • Workers at construction sites are easily exposed to many dangers and accidents involving falls, tripping, and missteps on stairs. However, researches on construction site monitoring system to prevent work-related injuries are still insufficient. The purpose of this study was to develop a wearable textile pressure insole sensor and examine its effectiveness in managing the real-time safety of construction workers. The sensor was designed based on the principles of parallel capacitance measurement using conductive textile and the monitoring system was developed by C# language. Three separate experiments were carried out for performance evaluation of the proposed sensor: (1) varying the distance between two capacitance plates to examine changes in capacitance charges, (2) repeatedly applying 1 N of pressure for 5,000 times to evaluate consistency, and (3) gradually increasing force by 1 N (from 1 N to 46 N) to test the linearity of the sensor value. Five subjects participated in our pilot test, which examined whether ascending and descending the stairs can be distinguished by our sensor and by weka assessment tool using k-NN algorithm. The 10-fold cross-validation method was used for analysis and the results of accuracy in identifying stair ascending and descending were 87.2% and 90.9%, respectively. By applying our sensor, the type of activity, weight-shifting patterns for balance control, and plantar pressure distribution for postural changes of the construction workers can be detected. The results of this study can be the basis for future sensor-based monitoring device development studies and fall prediction researches for construction workers.

  • This paper proposed the safety helmet monitoring system based on USN(Ubiquitous Sensor Networks) to secure the wear of helmet for labor on the construction area. As one of the most significant gear to assure labor's safety, The safety helmet would have the extend of labor's injuries minimized whether one wears or not when an accident takes place. At this point, we have developed and demonstrated the system which is able to check who wear the safety helmet properly for labors, composed of safety helmets with sensor node, router nodes, sink node and management program. Moreover, we could show optimized parameters for the proposed USN system as doing experiment and demonstration, we expected that this system would make for labor wear the safety helmet properly on the construction area as well as prevent economic injury caused by an accident with not wearing for labors.
