  • This paper describes prototype Virtual Reality Ship Simulator (VRSS) that we have recently developed next-generation training equipment based on the virtual reality (VR) technology. The inherent defects of conventional ship simulators are enormous costs and difficult system upgrade due to the system construction, such as large mock-up bridge system, wide visual presentations, In this paper, to cope with those problems, we explored VR technology that can give realistic environments in a virtual world. Then we constructed prototype VRSS system, which is, consists of PC-based human sensors, and Databases set having 3D object models and coefficients of Head Related Transfer Functions (HRTFs). 3D-WEBMASTER authoring tool was used as Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML). Using the VRSS system, we constructed Port an Passage Simulator for the harbor of INCHON in Korea, and Ship and Sea State Simulator for an arbitrary given sea environmental states by user. Through many simulation tests, we testified the efficiency of developed prototype VRSS by subject assessment with five participants. Then, we present results on the simulation experiments and conclude with discussion of evaluation results.

  • In these days, a vehicle simulator has been developed with a VR(Virtual Reality) system. A VR system must provide a vehicle simulator with natural interaction, sufficient immersion and realistic images. In addition, a VR system must present a driver with the realistic driving situation. To achieve these, it is important to obtain a fast and uniform rendering performance regardless of the complexity of virtual worlds. In this paper, the factors to improve the reality for the VR based vehicle simulator have been investigated. For the purpose, the modeling and the rendering methods which offer an improved performance for complex VR applications as the 3D road model have been implemented and verified. Then, we experiment on the influence of graphic and sound factors to the driver, and analyze each result for improving the reality such as the driver's viewport, the form of texture, the lateral distance of the side object, and the sound effect. These factors are evaluated on the driving system which is constructed for qualitative analysis. The research results could be used for improving the reality of the VR based vehicle simulator.

  • The paper describes creation methods of background scenes to implement realistic virtual environments in the VRSS (Virtual Reality Ship Simulator). VRSS is next-generation system constructed with virtual tools in a virtual space. Thus, it could have many benefits compared to conventional ship simulators composed with heavy bridge mock-up system and wide visual presentations. In this work, we developed effective 3D object modeling techniques, and constructed virtual harbor scene by using 3D-Webmaster authoring tool. The virtual harbor was built with object-oriented 3D objects modeled to interact with user's action. With the immersion-type VR system, we created virtual harbor environments in a virtual space, and discussed on the naturalness of the scene with test results of SDMPA (Semantic Differential Method for Psychophysical Assessment) by 10 subjects. As the results of subject assessment, all of the participants could felt natural-like harbor. Therefore, we found that the proposed creation methods and procedures of background scene are enabling to fit to the full mission VRSS construction.

  • Driving simulators provide engineers with a power tool in the development and modification stages of vehicle models. One of the most important factors to realistic simulations is the fidelity obtained by a motion bed and a real-time visual image generation algorithm. Virtual reality technology has been widely used to enhance the fidelity of vehicle simulators. This paper develops the virtual environment for such visual system as head-mounted display for a vehicle driving simulator. Virtual vehicle and environment models are constructed using the object-oriented analysis and design approach. Based on the object model, a three-dimensional graphic model is completed with CAD tools such as Rhino and Pro/ENGINEER. For real-time image generation, the optimized IRIS Performer 3D graphics library is embedded with the multi-thread methodology. The developed software for a virtual driving simulator offers an effective interface to virtual reality devices.

  • This essay explores the theories of Italian poet and filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini on the language of cinema. In essays such as "The Cinema of Poetry" and "The Written Language of Reality" composed during the 1960s, Pasolini argues for the special status of film language as "pre-grammatical" and links it to visual signifying processes such as dreams and memories. He also views cinema as the inroads towards a general semiotics of reality since, for him, the basic unit of film language is not the shot but those objects of reality that constitute the mise-en-scene of the shot, hence cinema is posited as the written language of reality whose minimal units of articulation are the very objects of reality itself. Accused by semioticians such as Umberto Eco of semiotic ingenuousness in trying to reduce the facts of culture to nature, Pasolini responded by arguing that he was trying to do the opposite, that is to say, to culturalize nature by examining it as a language. Against the constructed naturalism of both commercial and neorealist films, Pasolini argued for the creation of a poetic cinema able to exploit its constitutional pre grammatical, oneiric and sacred relationship with the world. The essay concludes with an analysis of the film Medea in which Pasolini′s attempt to restore a sacred vision of reality merges with his concerns over the cultural genocide of traditional and emarginated peoples at the hands of neocapitalist homologation.

  • With the continuous development of artificial intelligence using computers in the Fourth Industrial Age, the virtual space created by virtual reality experiences boosted by the power of artificial intelligence, provides a new experience for us. The purpose of this study is to explore the new aesthetics that the fashion industry provides to users in virtual space created by virtual reality technology. This research method is based on theoretical research on virtual reality technology and virtual space and constructs a research model applied to this research. The scope of this study is the application of virtual reality technology to fashion shows, fashion exhibitions, and fashion design apps on the website of professional virtual reality technology and fashion for the last five years from 2014 to 2019, which actively merged virtual reality technology with modern fashion. We will analyze the cases one by one. The results of this study are as follows. First, this study shows that the constructed virtual space of modern fashion using virtual reality technology creates three kinds of physical space, perceptual space, and imaginary space based on the commutative theory of virtual space formed by Swedish scholar J. $Widestr{\ddot{o}}m$. Second, virtual reality technology applied to fashion shows, fashion exhibitions, and fashion design apps is characterized by four aesthetic characteristics of presence, perceptual expansion, interactivity, and immersion in physical space, perception space, and imagination space.

  • VR (Virtual reality) technologies have given engineers the ability to design, test, and evaluate engineering systems in a virtual environment. The virtual plant is the highlight of the application of the VR technology to plant engineering. Plant design, maintenance, control, management, operation are integrated in the virtual plant. The VR monitoring system including the concept of the virtual plant is developed to replace a current control room that has number of gages and warning lamps in two-dimensional panels which shows the operating status of a plant. The operating status of the plant is displayed in the VR monitoring system through the realistic computer graphics. Sophisticated, realistic and prompt control becomes possible. The VR monitoring system consists of advanced visualization, walk-through simulation and navigation. In the virtual environment, a user can navigate and interact with each component of a plant. In addition, the user can access the information by just clicking interesting component. The VR monitoring system is operated with various modules, such as (1) virtual plant constructed with Graphic Management System (GMS), (2) Touch & Tell System, and (3) Equipment DB System of Part. In order to confirm the usefulness of the VR monitoring system, a pilot gas plant which is currently being used for plant operator training is taken as application. The end of the paper gives an outlook on the future work and a brief conclusion.

  • Research has shown that many smokers experience an increase in the desire to smoke when exposed to smoking-related cues. Cue exposure treatment (CET) refers to the manualized, repeated exposure to smoking-related cues, aimed at the reducing cue reactivity by extinction. In this study, we constructed a virtual reality system for evoking a desire of nicotine, which was based on the results of a Questionnaire of Nicotine-craving. And we investigated the effectiveness of the virtual reality system as compared to classical device (pictures). As a result, we reached the conclusion that virtual reality elicits more craving symptoms than the classical devices.
