There exist several kinds of continuous consolidation tests to analyze the consolidation behavior of soft clay. The constant rate of strain (CRS) test has been adopted as a standard method by several countries, and some researches also have been peformed by domestic researchers. Among those, the constant pressure ratio (CPR) test is peformed with the constant ratio of excess porewater pressure to vertical effective stress. The test has the advantage of considerable reduction of duration time. In the study, the consolidation characteristics are analyzed by performing the CPR test as validate the pressure ratio with undisturbed soft clay and remolded clay, Also, results of the standard consolidation test and CRS test are compared to verify the CPR test can be employed for practical use. As a result, effects of variation of the pressure ratio on consolidation parameter are similar to the strain rate in the CRS test. Therefore, the test can be used to analyze the consolidation behavior of soft clay But the test have some problems such as expensive cost of equipment and highly skilled workmanship.
The optimal extrusion process for the rate sensitive materials have been developed in this study. The preliminary designs of the die shapes have been carried out to maintain constant strain rate during extrusion and the upper bound approach has been applied to define the process variables (the die entrance velocity and the die length) including the rheology during deformation. The result for the axisymmetric extrusion process has been verified with rigid-viscoplastic finite element analysis. It has been confirmed that the optimal die has wider band of constant strain rate than the conical one does.
ILT proposed by Tezaghi was frequently used which is based on one dimensional consolidation theory. But this test require time longer than a week and has problems for extra soft clay such as the squeezing around the consolidation ring. Also consolidation curve is not clearly defined since only a few data is obtained in a test. Therefore it is difficult to determine Pc and the interpretation to determine the consolidation constants are rather complicated. In this paper, the stress-strain relationship and consolidation constant obtained by CRS and CG-test were analyzed and compared with the results by ILT.
Crystal structure of the $L1_2$ type $(Al,X)_3Ti$ alloy (X = Cr,Cu) is analyzed by X-ray diffractometry and the nonuniform strain behavior at high temperature is investigated. The lattice constants for the $L1_2$ type $(Al,X)_3Ti$ alloys decrease in the order of the atomic number of the substituted atom X, and the hardness tends to increase. In a compressive test at around 473K for $Al_{67.5}Ti_{25}Cr_{7.5}$, $Al_{65}Ti_{25}Cr_{10}$ and $Al_{62.5}Ti_{25}Cu_{12.5}$ alloys, it is found that the stress-strain curves showed serration, and deformation rate dependence appeared. It is assumed that the generation of serration is due to dynamic strain aging caused by the diffusion of solute atoms. As a result, activation energy of 60-95 kJ/mol is obtained. This process does not require direct involvement. In order to investigate the generation of serrations in detail, compression tests are carried out under various conditions. As a result, in the strain rate range of this experiment, serration is found to occur after 470K at a certain critical strain. The critical strain increases as the strain rate increases at constant temperature, and the critical strain tends to decrease as temperature rises under constant strain rate. This tendency is common to all alloys produced. In the case of this alloy system, the serration at around 473K corresponds to the case in which the dislocation velocity is faster than the diffusion rate of interstitial solute atoms at low temperature.
The structural dynamic behavior and yield strength considering both ductility and strain rate effects are analyzed in this article. For the single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system, the relationship between the relative velocity and the strain rate response is deduced and the strain rate spectrum is presented. The ductility factor can be incorporated into the strain rate spectrum conveniently based on the constant-ductility velocity response spectrum. With the application of strain rate spectrum, it is convenient to consider the ductility and strain rate effects in engineering practice. The modal combination method, i.e., square root of the sum of the squares (SRSS) method, is employed to calculate the maximum strain rate of the elastoplastic multiple-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) system under uniform excitation. Considering the spatially varying ground motions, a new response spectrum method is developed by incorporating the ductility factor and strain rate into the conventional response spectrum method. In order to further analyze the effects of strain rate and ductility on structural dynamic behavior and yield strength, the cantilever beam (one-dimensional) and the triangular element (two-dimensional) are taken as numerical examples to calculate their seismic responses in time domain. Numerical results show that the permanent displacements with and without considering the strain rate effect are significantly different from each other. It is not only necessary in theory but also significant in engineering practice to take the ductility and strain rate effects into consideration.
Continuous loading is applied the sample has been developed to overcome some of the problems associated with the incremental loading consolidation test. Therefore, it is able to reduce the test time and provide a well defined the curve of effective stress versus strain due to continuous stress-strain points. Also, the constant rate of strain consolidation(CRSC) test has been accepted widely as a standard method in foreign countries because of its many advantages. However, in Korea the CRSC test has not been used in engineering practice and experimentally verified. Because there is not a precise criterion of testing despite consolidation characteristics are influenced on strain rate and Pore pressure ratio. Consequently, it is difficult to apply in engineering practice. In this study, artificial neural networks are applied to the estimation of th proper strain rate and pore pressure ratio of the CRSC test. This study shows the possibility of utilizing the artificial neural networks model of estimation of the strain rate and pore pressure ratio in the CRSC test.
Numerous experimental investigations on metallic materials and solid polymers have shown that relaxation behavior is nonlinearly dependent on prior strain rate. The stress drops in a constant time interval nonlinearly increase with an increase of prior strain rate. And the relaxed stress associated with the fastest prior strain rate has the smallest stress magnitude at the end of relaxation periods. This paper deals with the performance of three classes of unified constitutive models in predicting the characteristic behaviors of relaxation. The three classes of models are categorized by a rate sensitivity of kinematic hardening rule. The first class uses rate-independent kinematic hardening rule that includes the competing effect of strain hardening and dynamic recovery. In the second class, a stress rate term is incorporated into the rate-independent kinematic hardening rule. The final one uses a rate-dependent format of kinematic hardening rule.
This paper presents numerical and theoretical investigations on the strain rate in steel-concrete composite (SC) panels under low-velocity impact of a hemispherical rigid body. Finite element analyses were performed on five specimens with different loading rates. The impact energy was kept constant to eliminate its influence by simultaneously altering the velocity and mass of the projectile. Results show that the strain rate in most parts of the specimens was low and its influence on bearing capacity and energy dissipation was limited in an average sense of space and time. Therefore, the strain rate effect can be ignored for the analyses of global deformation. However, the strain rate effect should be considered in local contact problems. Equations of the local strain and strain rate were theoretically derived.
In this study, a consolidometer for radially inward drainage under constant rate of strain (CRS) loading was developed. Theoretical solutions for determining the effective vertical stress and the coefficient of consolidation from the test result were also proposed. Reconstituted kaolinite samples which were consolidated up to 130 kPa were used to verify the developed consolidometer and the theory. Comparative experiments with CRS loading and incremental loading (IL) were carried out in radially in ward drainage as well as vertical and radially outward drainage. The results obtained from the developed CRS loading test agreed consistently with those of the conventional incremental loading test according to drainage directions. And the effect of drainage direction and drain diameter to consolidation characteristics was also evaluated. From the test results the applicability and the reliability of the suggested method were verified.
Strain-rate and temperature have significant effects on the one-dimensional (1D) compression behavior of soils. This paper focuses on the bonding degradation effect of soil structure on the time and temperature dependent behavior of soft structured clay. The strain-rate and temperature dependency of preconsolidation pressure are investigated in double logarithm plane and a thermal viscoplastic model considering the combined effect of strain-rate and temperature is developed to describe the mechanical behavior of unstructured clay. By incorporating the bonding degradation, the model is extended that can be suitable for structured clay. The extended model is used to simulate CRS (Constant Rate of Strain) tests conducted on structural Berthierville clay with different strain-rates and temperatures. The comparisons between predicted and experimental results show that the extended model can reasonably describe the effect of bonding degradation on the stain-rate and temperature dependent behavior of soft structural clay under 1D condition. Although the model is proposed for 1D analysis, it can be a good base for developing a more general 3D model.
