  • This paper was studied on the effect of the specific resistance of water on corrosion characteristics of STS 304 for gas boiler. The electrochemical polarization test of STS 304 for gas boiler was carried out. And the polarization resistance, uniform corrosion, corrosion behavior by impressed potential and corrosion sensitivity of STS 304 with specific resistance were considered. The main results are as following: 1) With being low the specific resistance of water, the polarization resistance and corrosion potential of STS 304 decreases, while corrosion current density increases. 2) Under constant impressed potential, the corrosion sensitivity of STS 304 is large with being low the specific resistance due to synergy effect of Cl ion.

  • Aerodynamic analysis of NACA wings moving with a constant speed over guideways are performed using an indirect boundary element method (potential-based panel method). An integral equation is obtained by applying Green's theorem on all surfaces of the fluid domain. The surfaces over the wing and the guideways are discretized as rectangular panel elements. Constant strength singularities are distributed over the panel elements. The viscous shear layer behind the wing is represented by constant strength dipoles. The unknown strengths of potentials are determined by inverting the aerodynamic influence coefficient matrices constructed by using the no penetration conditions on the surfaces and the Kutta condition at the trailing edge of the wing. The aerodynamic characteristics for the wings flying over nonplanar ground surfaces are investigated for several ground heights.

  • Most engineers interested in stress singularities have focused mainly on the research of power stress singularities for v-notched cracks in dissimilar materials. The logarithmic stress singularity was discussed a little in Bogy's paper. The power-logarithmic stress singularity was reported by Dempsey and Sinclair. It was indicated that the logarithmic singularity is only a special case of power-logarithmic stress singularities. Then, Dempsey reported specific cases which have power-logarithmic singularities even fur homogeneous boundary conditions. It was known that logarithmic stress singularities for v-notched cracks in dissimilar materials occurs when the surfaces of a v-notched crack have constant tractions. In this paper, using the complex potential method, the stresses and displacements having logarithmic stress singularities were obtained and the coefficients vectors were calculated by a numerical program code: Mathematica. It was shown that our analysis models don't have logarithmic stress singularities under the constant tractions, although the coefficient vectors are existing.

  • Disposal of blue crab wastes represents a significant problem to processors, who are limited with respect to acceptable disposal alternatives. Anaerobic bioconversion technology was investigated to determine an environmentally sound and economic disposal method for these wastes. In the study ultimate methane yield for total crab solid waste was $0.180m^3/kg$ VS added and biodegradation rate constant was $0.15day^{-1}$. Methane yield of the bench-scale reactor operated on similar feedstock was $0.189m^3/kg$ VS added and biodegradation rate constant was $0.06day^{-1}$. These results indicate that anaerobic bioconversion of blue crab wastes was technically feasible. Use of anaerobic bioconversion technology can be an attractive option for blue crab processing waste management. The by-product methane gas could be used for maintainign a number of processing operations (i.e., heat for cooking, or keeping temperature of digester constant).

  • To evaluate the applicability of dielectric constant measurement method on the geoenvironmental investigation of subsurface contaminated by landfill leachate, the analysis on dielectric characteristics of sand containing contaminated pore water by landfill leachate was performed. The separate real and imaginary parts of dielectric constant were investigated in the frequency range of 75kHz to 12MHz. The real part of dielectric constant increased at the lower frequency wherea the real part of dielectric constant decreased at the higher frequency as the concentration of leachate increased. These results can be explained by the frequency dependence of space charge polarization and orientation polarization. The imaginary part of dielectric constant on the contaminated sand with leachate increased with their concentration for whole frequency range. These results are caused by the increase of energy loss due to the enhancement of conduction in soil with leachate concentration. The results in this study indicate that the dielectric constant measurement method has potential in evaluating the contaminated soil and pore water by landfill leachate.

  • In batch cultures of Brevibacterium ketoglutamicum for the L-ornithine production in which the pH and dissolved oxygen concentration were regulated constant, the profiles of redox potential were observed in parallel with the profiles of state variables such as cell, glucose, and ornithine concentrations. It was found that the redox potential had a close relationship with cell concentration and was also affected by ornithine concentration. The effects of ornithine and glucose on redox potential were examined in a separate series of experiments. Based on the experimental results, a correlation of redox potential to glucose, cell and ornithine concentrations has been proposed. The proposed correlation can be used for on-line estimation of ornithine concentration from on-line data of redox potential, glucose concentration, and cell concentration.

  • Piezoelectric materials produce an electric field by deformation, and deform when subjected to an electric field. The coupling nature of piezoelectric materials has acquired wide applications in electric-mechanical and electric devices, including electric-mechanical actuators, sensors and structures. In this paper, a hollow sphere composed of a radially polarized spherically anisotropic piezoelectric material, e.g., PZT_5 or (Pb) (CoW) $TiO_3$ under internal or external uniform pressure and a constant potential difference between its inner and outer surfaces or combination of these loadings has been studied. Electrodes attached to the inner and outer surfaces of the sphere induce the potential difference. The governing equilibrium equations in radially polarized form are shown to reduce to a coupled system of second-order ordinary differential equations for the radial displacement and electric potential field. These differential equations are solved analytically for seven different sets of boundary conditions. The stress and the electric potential distributions in the sphere are discussed in detail for two piezoceramics, namely PZT _5 and (Pb) (CoW) $TiO_3$. It is shown that the hoop stresses in hollow sphere composed of these materials can be made virtually uniform across the thickness of the sphere by applying an appropriate set of boundary conditions.

  • Polymer/ceramic composite is of great interest as a dielectric material for embedded capacitors. This paper is concerned in the effects of $BaTiO_3$ particle size on epoxy/$BaTiO_3$ composite films for embedded capacitors. 6 different size powders smaller than 1 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter and bisphenol-A type epoxy were used for this experiment. Dielectric constant of the epoxy/$BaTiO_3$ composite capacitors increases as the powder size increases at the same powder loading, which is due to the increase of tetragonality of the powders as particle size increases. And leakage current of the capacitors also increases dramatically as the powder size increases. It was explained that this is due to the decrease of the number of $BaTiO_3$epoxy/$BaTiO_3$ potential barriers per unit length and, moreover, the enhancement of potential barrier lowering effects caused by increase of potential drop per one barrier. As a result, there is tradeoff between high dielectric constant and low leakage current in the epoxy/$BaTiO_3$ composite capacitors. So it is important to select proper size $BaTiO_3$ powders in accordance with needs.

  • The benzophenone derivatives(4-$CH_3O$-4'-$NO_2$ and 3,4'-di-$NO_2$) are synthesized by the Fridel-Craft acylation and the nitration method. Electrochemical redox potentials of the benzophenone derivatives (4-$CH_3O$, H, 3-Cl, 3-$NO_2$, 4-$NO_2$, 4-$CH_3O$-4'-$NO_2$, 3,4'-di-$NO_2$) are measured by using cyclic voltammometry. In the relationship of summing Hammett value and redox potential, we find a proportional constant$(\rho)$ that shows a good relation with an electrochemical property and a reactivity of the benzophenone derivatives. The benzophenone substituted with the electron donating groups(4-$OCH_3$ and 4-$OCH_3-4'-NO_2$) are higher the energy in the LUMO level, then increasing a band-gap energy$(E_g)$, their $E_gs$ are obtained as a 3.94 eV and 3.59 eV, respectively.

  • When a circuit breaker is opened, a large capacitance around the buses, the circuit breaker and the potential transformer (PT) might cause PT ferroresonance. During PT ferroresonance, the iron core repeats saturation and unsaturation even though the supplied voltage is a rated voltage. This paper describes an analytical analysis of PT ferroresonance in the transient-state. To analyze ferroresonance analytically, the iron core is modelled by a simplified two-segment core model in this paper. Thus, a nonlinear ordinary differential equation (ODE) for the flux linkage is changed into a linear ODE with constant coefficients, which enables an analytical analysis. In this simplified model, each state, which is either saturated or unsaturated state, corresponds to one of the three modes, i.e. overdamping, critical damping and underdamping. The flux linkage and the voltage in each state are obtained analytically by solving the linear ODE with constant coefficients. The proposed transient analysis is effective in the more understanding of ferroresonance and thus can be used to design a ferroresonance prevention or suppression circuit of a PT.
