  • The scanning Maxwell-stress microscopy (SMM) is a dynamic noncontact electric force microscopy that allows simultaneous access to the electrical properties of molecular system such as surface potential, surface charge, dielectric constant and conductivity along with the topography. The Scanning near-field optical / atomic force microscopy (SNOAM) is a new tool for surface imaging which was introduced as one application of the atomic force microscope (AFM). Operated with non-contact forces between the optical fiber and sample as well as equipped with the piezoscanners, the instrument reports on surface topology without damaging or modifying the surface for measuring of optical characteristic in the films. We report our recent results of its application to nanoscopic study of domain structures and electrical functionality in organic thin films by SMM. Furthermore, we have illustrated the SNOAM image in obtaining the merocyanine dye films as well as the optical image.

  • The removal characteristics of As and Se ions from aqueous solution by hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (HTMAB) modified anthracite (HTMAB-AT) were investigated under various conditions of contact time, pH and temperature. When the pH is 6, the zeta potential value of anthracite (AT) is -24 mV and on the other hand, the zeta potential value of the HTMAB-AT is +44 mV. It can be seen that the overall increase of about 60 mV. Increasing the (+) potential value indicates that the surface of the adsorbent had a stronger positive charge, so adsorption for the anion metal was increased. The isotherm data was well described by Langmuir and Temkin isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 7.81 and 6.89 mg/g for As and Se ions from the Langmuir isotherm model at 298 K, respectively. The kinetic data was tested using pseudo first and pseudo second order models. The results indicated that adsorption fitted well with the pseudo second order kinetic model. The mechanism of the adsorption process showed that adsorption was dependent on intra particle diffusion model according to two step diffusion. The thermodynamic parameters(${\Delta}G^{\circ}$, ${\Delta}H^{\circ}$, and ${\Delta}S^{\circ}$) were also determined using the equilibrium constant value obtained at different temperatures. The thermodynamic parameters indicated that the adsorption process was physisorption, and also an endothermic and spontaneous process.

  • Predatory nematodes are ubiquitous and feed on soil microorganisms including plant parasitic nematodes. They reduce populations of plant parasitic nematodes in virtually all soils because of their constant association with plant parasitic nematodes in the rhizosphere. Predatory potential of several species of predacious nematodes, belonging to the orders Mononchida, Diplogasterida, Dorylaimida and Aphelenchida, have been studied in detail on plant parasitic nematodes but most of the studies were based on in vitro experiments. A review of progress on the use of predatory nematodes as biological control agents of plant parasitic nematodes reveals that advocacy for predatory nematodes dates back to the early $20^{th}$ century; nevertheless, their potential has begun to be studied in recent years. Information on the efficacy of predatory nematodes under field conditions is lacking; however, some predatory nematodes have given very promising results against plant parasitic nematodes. This article summarizes research progress to date on predatory nematodes and discusses about their possible use in the management of plant parasitic nematodes.

  • In order to get basic information on the reference electrode material for the long life Al concentration sensor in zinc galvanizing melt, the workability and stability of fluorine potential cell with $CaF_2$ single crystal electrolyte were examined carefully at constant temperature for six kinds of reference materials (Zn, Sn, Cd, Bi, Pb, Al-Sn alloy + fluorides). Good workability and stability of the sensor were found in sensor with $Bi+BiF_3$ reference electrode. The Al sensor with $Bi+BiF_3$ reference electrode was assembled and was tested in Zn-Al melt with different Al concentration. The EMF was changed rapidly with the change of Al concentration and was stabilized in a short time. Thus the response of EMF was satisfactory for $CaF_2$ sensor. The correlationship between EMF from the sensor and logarithm of Al concentration has been derived from the least square regression method. E/mV=57.515log[wt% Al]+1883.3 R=0.9717 ($0.013{\leq}[wt% Al]{\leq}0.984$) The EMF from Al sensor was increased linearly against logarithm of [wt% Al]. The fluorine potential of Zn-Al melt was also calculated to be in the range of $10^{-60}{\sim}10^{-61}$ Pa for the present experiemental condition.

  • In this paper, the wave pattern around the hull with the transom stern advancing on the free surface with a constant speed was taken into consideration. To solve the problem the numerical analysis program was developed using Rankine source panel method based on potential flow analysis technique. The non-linearity of the free surface boundary conditions was fully satisfied. To verify the validity of the developed program the numerical calculations for Athena hull and KCS(KRISO container ship) hull was performed. The results of the numerical computation was compared with the ones of the model test experiment.

  • With sectional data obtained in September of 1987, 1988 and 1989 by quadrireciprocal ADCP measurement and CTD cast, the current structure, volume transport and vorticity in the Western Channel of the Korea Strait were studied. The characteristics of Tsushima Current water persisted throughout the summer especially in the homogeneous water of temperature $14-16^{\circ}C$ located at the depth of 50-100m below seasonal termocline. Thickness and velocity of the homogeneous layer are about 10-170m and 20-60cm/s. and the relative vorticity for this layer is shown to be nearly constant and it is smaller than the planetary vorticity. Potential vorticity of $2.70-7.10{\times}10^{-6}m^{-1}s^{-1}$ is found to be dependent mainly on planetary rather than on the relative vorticities. The Tsushima Current water represented by the homogeneous layer R14-16^{\circ}C$ may keep the potential vorticity at the area of strong current in the Strait. The ADCP current structure is similar to geostrophic current and the core of the current with the speed of 30-50cm/s is situated in the middle layer over the deep trough. With large tidal fluctuation the volume transport has mean value of 1.17sv which was about 40% larger than that of geostrophic calculation.

  • Using a simple continuous optical technique, coupled with measurements of zeta potential, the flocculation characteristics of kaoline suspensions of different content(15, 35 and 55 NTU) by several cationic polyelectrolytes, has been examined. The optimum mixing is obtained under a constant stirring of 200 rpm, differently from a general flocculation test. The charge density of a polyelectrolyte is important in determining the optimum dosage and in the removal of kaoline particles. The optimum dosage is less for the polyelectrolyte of higher charge density and is the same regardless of kaoline content. At the dosage, the removal of kaoline particles is higher for the polyelectrolyte of higher charge density and zeta potential of kaoline particles reaches to near zero. The rate of adsorption and flocculation rate have been found to be affected by charge density and molecular weight of a polyelelctrolyte and the content of kaoline particles.

  • The type of turbine developed is based on the very low head of water potential source for the electric power production. The area of research is focused for the axial water turbine that can be applied at the simple site open channel with has a very low cost and environmental impact compared to the conventional hydro installation. High efficiency of axial turbine which applied to the very low potential head will made this type of turbine can be used at wider potential site. Existing irrigation weir and river area will be the perfect site for this turbine. This paper will compare the effects of the variation of swirl velocity criterion during the design of the blade of guide vane and rotor of the turbine. Effects of the swirl velocity criterion is wider known as a vortex conditions (free vortex, force vortex and swirl velocity constant), and the free vortex is the very popular condition that applied by most of turbine designer, therefore will be interesting to do a comparison against other criterion. ANSYS Fluent will be used for simulation and to determine the predictive performance obtained by each of design criteria.

  • Copper has been proved to be the best catalyst for electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction, however, for optimal efficiency and selectivity, its performance requires improvements. Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (RR) using CuO nanowire electrode was performed with different concentrations of KHCO3 electrolyte (0.1 M, 0.5 M, and 1 M). Cu(OH)2 was formed on Cu foil, followed by thermal-treatment at 200℃ under the air atmosphere for 2 hrs to transform it to the crystalline phase of CuO. We evaluated the effects of different KHCO3 electrolyte concentrations on electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (RR) using the CuO nanowire electrode. At a constant current (5mA), low concentrated bicarbonate exhibited a more negative potential -0.77 V vs. Reversible Hydrogen Electrode (RHE) (briefly abbreviated as VRHE), while the negative potential reduced to -0.33 VRHE in the high concentration of bicarbonate solution. Production of H2 and CH4 increased with an increased concentration of electrolyte (KHCO3). CH4 production efficiency was high at low negative potential whereas HCOOH was not influenced by bicarbonate concentration. Our study provides insights into efficient, economically viable, and sustainable methods of mitigating the harmful environmental effects of CO2 emission.

  • The closed-form expressions of the vector gravity and gravity gradient tensor due to a circular disk are derived. The gravity potential due to a circular disk with a constant density is defined for a cylindrical system. Then, the vector gravity is derived by differentiating the gravity potential with respect to cylindrical coordinates. The radial component of the vector gravity in the cylindrical system is converted into horizontal gravity components in the Cartesian system. Finally, the gravity gradient tensor due to a circular disk is obtained by differentiating the vector gravity with respect to the Cartesian coordinates.
