Radiative heating of a liquid rocket base plane due to plume emission is numerically investigated. Calculation of flow and temperature fields around rocket nozzle precedes and thereby realistic plume shape and temperature distribution inside the plume are obtained. Based on the calculated temperature field, radiative transfer equation is solved by discrete ordinate method. The averaged radiative heat flux reaching the base plane is about $5kW/m^2$ at the flight altitude of 10.9km. This value is small compared with radiative heat flux caused by constant-temperature (1500K) plume emission, but it is not negligibly small. At higher altitude (29.8km), view factor between the babe plane and the exhaust plume is increased due to the increased expansion angle of the plume. Nevertheless, the radiative heating disappears since the base plane is heated to high temperature (above 1000K) due to convective heat transfer.
A computational study has been performed to examine the effects of catalytic walls on the stagnation region heat transfer. The boundary conditions for none, finite, and fully catalytic walls have been incorporated into a multi-block compressible Navier-Stokes solver. In the present study, both chemical and thermal non-equilibrium effects were included. The flows over a blunt body model were simulated by varying surface catalytic recombination rates. A full range of catalycities was explored in the context of a constant wall temperature assumption. Detailed information on species concentrations, temperature, and surface heat flux are presented. Comparison with available flight data of surface heat flux is also made.
The elliptic conceptual second moment models for turbulent heat fluxes, which are proposed on the basis of elliptic-blending and elliptic-relaxation equations, are applied to calculate the combined forced and natural turbulent convection in a vertical plane channel. The models satisfy the near-wall balance between viscous diffusion, viscous dissipation and temperature-pressure gradient correlation, and also have the characteristics of approaching its respective conventional high Reynolds number model far away from the wall. Also the models are closely linked to the elliptic blending model which is used for the prediction of Reynolds stress. In order to calibrate the heat flux models, firstly, the distributions of mean temperature and scala flux in fully developed channel flow with constant wall difference temperature are solved by the present models. The buoyancy effect on the turbulent characteristics including the mean velocity and temperature, the Reynolds stress tensor, and the turbulent heat flux vector are examined. In the opposing flow, the turbulent transport is greatly enhanced with both the Reynolds stresses and the turbulent heat fluxes being remarkably increased; whereas, in the aiding flow, the opposite change is observed. The results of prediction are directly compared to the DNS to assess the performance of the model predictions and show that the behaviors of the turbulent heat transfer in the whole flow region are well captured by the present models.
This study experimentally investigated the effects of droplet temperature on the heat transfer characteristics during collision of a single droplet on a heated wall above the Leidenfrost temperature. Experiments were performed by varying temperature from 40 to $100^{\circ}C$ while the collision velocity and wall temperature were maintained constant at 0.7 m/s at $500^{\circ}C$, respectively. Evolution of temperature distribution at the droplet-wall interface as well as collision dynamics of the droplet were simultaneously recorded using synchronized high-speed video and infrared cameras. The local heat flux distribution at the collision surface was deduced using the measured temperature distribution data. Various physical parameters, including residence time, local heat flux distribution, heat transfer rate, heat transfer effectiveness and vapor film thickness, were measured from the visualization data. The results showed that increase in droplet temperature reduces the residence time and increases the vapor film thickness. This ultimately results in reduction in the total heat transfer by conduction through the vapor film during droplet-wall collision.

This paper describes an experimental investigation which has been carried out with distilled water with the range of heat flux and pressure covering 7,400-28,000kcal/$m^2/h$ and 0.42-1.0332kg/$cm^{2}abs$, respectively. In this experiment, Nickel coated mirror surface heater of 5 cm O.D. was used as a heating source. The conclusions summerized as follows;1. The useful correlation of the test data for the heat transfer coefficient is presented as a function of the pressure. $$a/a_{s}=c{\times}p\;0.18$$ where a is the heat transfer coefficient and $a_s$ is the heat transfer coefficient at atmospheric pressure and p is the pressure, C is constant. 2. The bubble diameter near the heating surface and rising velocity increased with the heat flux. 3. A decrease in pressure results in the decrease of the number of nucleation sites and the increase of the bubble volume. 4. Bubble rising velocity differences are incrased maximumly up to $200\%$ of that at atmopheric pressure.
The importance of surface conditions of nucleate boiling is well recognized and it has been known that the heat transfer to boiling liquid is closely related to the bubble population density. The bubble population density should depend on various factors such as heat flux, surface roughness, surface contamination, properties of liquid, etc. In this paper the effect of surface conditions on heat transfer in nucleate boiling is treated. The experiments were carried out with distilled water boiler, on the horizontal heating surfaces, sintered with various bronze particle, under atmospheric pressure. In addition, experimental investigation for the polished bronze surface was performed. By studing a coefficient Xb defined by eq. (9), which represents the bubble foaming ability of heating surface, generalized fomula on the heat transfer in the nucleate toiling were expressed. The coefficient $X_b$, determined empirically, is not constant and indicates a major influence of the sintered metal surfaces on the $\Delta$, necessary to sustain nucleate boiling at any given heat flux. In this study, the main results are obtained as follows; (1) At low temperature difference, the coefficient $X_b$ of sintered metal surface was found to he higher than the polished surface throughout the full range of experiments. (2) The optimum sintered structure showing the maximum coefficient $X_b$ has been confirmed to exist and it is encountered when particle diameter is $256{\mu}$.
The present paper investigated the effect of ultrasonic vibrations on the melting process of a phase-change material (PCM). Furthermore, the present study considered constant heat-flux boundary conditions unlike many of the previous researches, which had adopted constant wall-temperature conditions. Therefore in the study, modified dimensionless numbers such as Stefan and Rayleigh were adopted to represent heat transfer results. The experimental results revealed that ultrasonic vibrations accompanied the effects like agitation, acoustic streaming, cavitation, and oscillating fluid motion, accelerating the melting process as much as 2.5 times, compared with the result of natural melting (i. e., the case without ultrasonic vibration). Such effects are believed to be a prime mechanism in the overall melting process when ultrasonic vibrations were applied. Subsequently, energy could be saved by applying the ultrasonic vibrations to the natural melting In addition, various time-wise dimensionless numbers provided a conclusive evidence of the important role of the ultrasonic vibrations on the melting phenomena of the PCM.
An experimental study was conducted to identify the quantitative measurement bias for the bare-bead thermocouple (TC), which was widely used for measuring temperature in fire experiments. To this end, an apparatus could be controlled individually gas flow rate, preheating temperature and incident radiative heat flux was developed to simulate the thermal environments of fire. A relative measurement bias of bare-bead TC was evaluated with the comparison of double-shield aspirated TC. As a result, the relative measurement bias of bare-bead TC was gradually increased with the increase in radiative heat flux with constant gas temperature. The relative bias was also significantly increased with the decrease in gas temperature. Quantitatively, at the gas temperature of $20^{\circ}C$, the bare-bead TC had the relative bias of approximately 400% with the radiative heat flux of $20kW/m^2$ corresponding to thermal radiation level of the flashover. The present study was intend to provide fire researchers with methodologies for the reanalyses of temperature measured using bare-bead TC, radiation corrections, and validation of fire modeling.
The ignition characteristics of a reactive solid with rough surface by constant heat flux were studied. The geometry of surface was represented by a set of identical protrusions having a shape of wedge based on the block of reactive solid. Several regimes of ignition were found, depending on the ratio of the protrusion length and the depth of the heated layer, formed in course of ignition process: 1) when the substance is ignited as the massive block, and the effect of roughness is not pronounced; 2) when ignited are the individual protrusions; and 3) in the intermediate region between the first two. Critical ignition conditions: ignition time and ignition criterion, are determined for the three regimes. The results are compared with the results for the one-dimensional ignition of the semi-infinite body. It is shown, that the effect of geometry on ignition results in the considerable reduction of ignition delay, and the amount of energy required for the successful ignition is less compared to the one- dimensional case.
