In many previous studies, a prestressed concrete column has a larger flexural strength, shear strength and restoring force than a RC column. Recently, a precast prestressed concrete column is rising up a very rational column structure in that a economic aspect. In a precast prestressed concrete column, it makes in a factory. So, it needs a small construction site and acquires a higher durability than a cast in place concrete column. Seven precast concrete columns were tested under a constant axial load and a cyclically reversed horizontal load to investigate the performance. It is designed with a hollow section and consisted of 4 segments. The main variables of the test were a amount of prestressed, a type of joints and a boding type of strands. The test results show that the performance of a precast prestressed concrete column; failure mode, maximum load, energy dissipation and stiffness degradation.

Nonlinear static analysis is used to quantify the resistance of the structure to lateral deformation and to gauge the mode of deformation and intensity of local demands. A simple method for the nonlinear static analysis of complex building structures subjected to monotonically increasing horizontal loading(pushover analysis) is presented. The method is designed to be a part of new methodologies for the seismic design and evaluation of structures. A variety of existing pushover analysis procedures are currently being consolidated under programs such as ATC 40 and FEMA 273. And various techniques have been recommended, including the use of constant lateral force profiles and the use of adaptive and multimodal approaches. In this paper a modal pushover analysis using design response spectra of UBC 97 is proposed. Proposed method is compared against the method in FEMA 273 and ATC 40, and results of time history analysis.

Electrorheological(HER) and magnetorheologica(MR) fluids have a unique ability to increase the dynamic yield stress of the fluid substantially when electric or magnetic field is applied. ER and MR fluid-based dampers are typically analyzed using Bingham-plastic shear flow analysis under Quasi-steady fully developed flow conditions. An alternative perspective, supported by measurements reported in the literature, is to allow for post-yield shear thinning and shear thickening. To model these, the constant post-yield plastic viscosity in Bingham model can be replaced with a power-law model dependent on shear strain rate that is known as the Herschel-Bulkley fluid model. The objective of this paper is to predict the damping forces analytically in a typical ER bypass damper for variable electric field, or yield stress using Herschel-Bulkley analysis.
A new method identifies coupled fluid-structure system with a reduced set of state variables is presented. Assuming that the structural model is known a priori either from an analysis or a test and using linear transformations between structural and aeroelastic states, it is possible to deduce aerodynamic information from sampled time histories of the aeroelastic system. More specifically given a finite set of structural modes the method extracts generalized aerodynamic force matrix corresponding to these mode shapes. Once the aerodynamic forces are known, an aeroelastic reduced-order model can be constructed in discrete-time, state-space format by coupling the structural model and the aerodynamic system. The resulting reduced-order model is suitable for constant Mach, varying density analysis.

The purpose of this study is to develop the algorithm for dynamic interaction analysis of submerged floating tunnel and vehicles. The dynamic behavior characteristic of submerged floating tunnel is certainly different with general structures, because the submerged floating tunnel is floating in the middle of water, and subjected to constant buoyance. Therefore the analyses in various aspects should be carried out to secure structural stability and practicality of structures. To conduct the dynamic interaction analysis, the structure is modeled by commercial FEM program ABAQUS to investigate modal characteristic. Also the added mass concept is applied to represent the inertial force by a fluid, and then dynamic interaction analyses are conducted with superposition method when the KTX is moving along the submerged floating tunnel. And the time histories are presented for vertical and lateral displacement at the center of the tunnel.

This study addresses the control problem of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) during the transition period when the flying mode changes from hovering to translational motion in the horizontal plane. First, we introduce a compensation algorithm that improves height stabilization and reduces altitude drop. The main principle is to incorporate pitch and roll measurements into the feedforward term of the altitude controller to provide a larger thrust force. To further improve altitude control, we propose the fuzzy logic controller that improves system behavior. Simulation results presented in the paper highlight the effectiveness of the proposed controllers.
We present a theoretical formulation of diffusion process on solid surface based on multidimensional transition state theory (TST). Surface diffusion of single adatom results from hopping processes on corrugated potential surface and is affected by surface vibrations of surface atoms. The rate of rare events such as hopping between lattice sites can be calculated by transition state theory. In order to include the interactions of the adatom with surface vibrations, it is assumed that the coordinates of adatom are coupled to the bath of harmonic oscillators whose frequencies are those of surface phonon modes. When nearest neighbor surface atoms are considered, we can construct Hamiltonians which contain terms for interactions of adatom with surface vibrations for the well minimum and the saddle point configurations, respectively. The escape rate constants, thus the surface diffusion parameters, are obtained by normal mode analysis of the force constant matrix based on the Hamiltonian. The analysis is applied to the diffusion coefficients of W, Ir, Pt and Ta atoms on the bcc(110) plane of W in the zero-coverage limit. The results of the calculations are encouraging considering the limitations of the model considered in the study.

The local oxidation using an atomic force microscopy (AFM) is useful for Si-base fabrication of nanoscale structures and devices. SiC is a wide band-gap material that has advantages such as high-power, high-temperature and high-frequency in applications, and among several SiC poly types, 4H-SiC is the most attractive poly type due to the high electron mobility. However, the AFM local oxidation of 4H-SiC for fabrication is still difficult, mainly due to the physical hardness and chemical inactivity of SiC. In this paper, we investigated the local oxidation of 4H-SiC surface using an AFM. We fabricated oxide patterns using a contact mode AFM with a Pt/Ir-coated Si tip (N-type, $0.01{\sim}0.025\;{\Omega}cm$) at room temperature, and the relative humidity ranged from 40 to 50%. The height of the fabricated oxide pattern ($1{\sim}3\;nm$) on SiC is similar to that of typically obtained on Si ($10^{15}{\sim}10^{17}\;cm^{-3}$). We perform the 2-D simulation to further analyze the electric field between the tip and the surface. Whereas the simulated electric field on Si surface is constant ($5\;{\times}\;10^7\;V/m$), the electric field on SiC surface increases with increasing the doping concentration from ${\sim}10^{15}$ to ${\sim}10^{17}\;cm^{-3}$. We demonstrated that a specific electric field ($4\;{\times}\;10^7\;V/m$) and a doping concentration (${\sim}10^{17}\;cm^{-3}$) is sufficient to switch on/off the growth of the local oxide on SiC.
This study has been conducted with the purpose of examining the fatigue crack growth characteristics of $Al_2O_3$ short fiber reinforced aluminum matrix composites made by squeeze casting process with different applied pressure and binder amount. Fatigue crack growth experiments have been performed under constant load amplitude method with a fixed load ratio. The rate of crack propagation was decreased with binder amount as well as applied pressure. Also fatigue crack growth path in matrix was changed from flat to rough mode with an increase of applied pressure. In the composites, fatigue crack was propagated to interface between matrix and reinforcement at 10MPa, but it was propagated to reinforcement at 20MPa. The major reason of thee result was considered that interfacial bonding force and microstructure of matrix were improved due to an increase of applied pressure. Localized ductile striation in the composites was observed at low growth rate region and such a phenominon was remarkable with an increase of applied pressure. At high growth rate region, the propensity of fracture appearance was changed from interfacial debonding to reinforcement fracture with an increase of applied pressure.

A floating Oscillating Water Column (OWC) wave energy converter, a Backward Bent Duct Buoy (BBDB), was simulated using a state-of-the-art, two-dimensional, fully-nonlinear Numerical Wave Tank (NWT) technique. The hydrodynamic performance of the floating OWC device was evaluated in the time domain. The acceleration potential method, with a full-updated kernel matrix calculation associated with a mode decomposition scheme, was implemented to obtain accurate estimates of the hydrodynamic force and displacement of a freely floating BBDB. The developed NWT was based on the potential theory and the boundary element method with constant panels on the boundaries. The mixed Eulerian-Lagrangian (MEL) approach was employed to capture the nonlinear free surfaces inside the chamber that interacted with a pneumatic pressure, induced by the time-varying airflow velocity at the air duct. A special viscous damping was applied to the chamber free surface to represent the viscous energy loss due to the BBDB's shape and motions. The viscous damping coefficient was properly selected using a comparison of the experimental data. The calculated surface elevation, inside and outside the chamber, with a tuned viscous damping correlated reasonably well with the experimental data for various incident wave conditions. The conservation of the total wave energy in the computational domain was confirmed over the entire range of wave frequencies.
