Split Hopkinson pressure bar(SHPB) is used to obtain compressive stress-strain data and deformation characteristics of brittle materials such as rock and concrete. SHPB demands both dynamic stress equilibrium condition and nearly constant strain rate before the failure of the specimen. Pulse shape technique, which places a thin metal disk between launched impact bar and incident bar, should be adopted to satisfy both conditions. In this study, metallic disks with various shapes were used to control the incident impact wave. The results show that the peak value of stress and the length of waves increased with decreasing thickness and diameter of the pulse shaper. In order to investigate shape and strain rate-dependency of the pulse shapers, dynamic compressive stress-strain curves were obtained and analyzed.
In vertical hydro/hydraulic power turbine-generator applications, traditionally, cylindrical turbine guide bearings (TGBs) are widely used to provide turbine runner shafts with smooth rotation guides and supports. All existing cylindrical TGBs with simple plain pads have drawbacks such as having no pressure generation and film stiffness at the no-load condition and in addition, at the low-load/low-eccentricity condition, having very low film stiffness values and lacking design credibility in the stiffness values themselves. In this paper, in order to fundamentally improve the low-load/low-eccentricity performance of conventional cylindrical TGBs and thus enhance their design-application availability and usefulness, we propose to introduce a rotation-directional leading-edge taper to each partitioned pad, i.e., a pad leading-edge taper. We perform a design analysis of lubrication performance on $4-Pad{\times}4-Row$ cylindrical TGBs to verify an engineering/technical usefulness of the proposed pad leading-edge taper. Analysis results show that by introducing the leading-edge taper to each pad of the cylindrical TGB one can expect a constant high average direct stiffness with a high degree of design credibility, regardless of load value, even at the low-load/low-eccentricity condition and also control the average direct stiffness value by exploring the taper height as a design parameter. Therefore, we conclude that the proposed pad leading-edge tapers are greatly effective in more accurately predicting and controlling rotordynamic characteristics of vertical hydro-power turbine-generator rotor-bearing systems to which cylindrical TGBs are applied.

New diesel engines equipped with common-rail injection systems and advanced engine management control allow drastic decreases in the production of particulate matters and nitrogen oxides with a significant advantage in terms of the fuel consumption and $CO_2$ emissions. Nevertheless, the contribution of exhaust gas after treatment in the ultra low emission vehicles conception has become unavoidable today. Recently the passive type DPF(Diesel Particulate Filter Trap) system for diesel passenger vehicle has been manufactured into mass production from a French automotive maker since the year of 2000. This passive DPF system fully relies on the catalytic effects from additives blended into the diesel fuel and additives injected into the DPF system. In this study, the effects of PM regeneration in the commercial diesel passenger vehicle with the passive type DPF system were investigated in chassis dynamometer CVS(constant volume sampler)-75 mode. As shown in this experimental results, the DPF regeneration was observed at temperature as low as $350^{\circ}C$. And the engine-controlled the DPF regeneration founded to be one of the most promising regeneration technologies. Moreover, the durability of this DPF system was evaluated with a season weather in terms of the differential pressure and exhaust gas temperature traces from a road test during the total mileage of 80,000km.

In chip plating, several parameters must be taken into consideration. Current density, solution concentration, pH, solution temperature, components volume, chip and media ratio, barrel geometrical shape were most likely found to have an effect to the process yields. The 3 types of barrels utilized in chip plating industry are the onventional rotating barrel, vibrational barrel(vibarrel), and the centrifugal type. Conventional rotating barrel is a close type and is commonly used. The components inside the barrel are circulated by the barrel's rotation at a horizontal axis. Process yield has known to have higher thickness deviation. The vibrational barrel is an open type which offers a wide exposure to electrolyte resulting to a stable thickness deviation. It rotates in a vertical axis coupled with multi-vibration action to facilitate mixed up and easy transportation of components. The centrifugal barrel has its plated work centrifugally compacted against the cathode ring for superior electrical contact with simultaneous rotary motion. This experiment has determined the effect of barrel vibration intensity to the plating thickness distribution. The procedures carried out in the experiment involved the overall plating process., cleaning, rinse, Nickel plating, Tin-Lead plating. Plating time was adjusted to meet the required specification. All other parameters were maintained constant. Two trials were performed to confirm the consistency of the result. The thickness data of the experiment conducted showed thatbthe average mean value obtained from higher vibrational intensity is nearer to the standard mean. The distribution curve shown has a narrower specification limits and it has a reduced variation around the target value. Generally, intensity control in vi-barrel facilitates mixed up and easy transportation of components. However, it is desirable to maintain an optimum vibration intensity to prevent solution intrusion into the chips' internal electrode. A cathodic reaction can occur in the interface of the external and internal electrode. 2H20 + e $\rightarrow$M/TEX> 20H + H2.. Hydrogen can penetrate into the body and create pressure which can cause cracks. At high intensity, the chip's motion becomes stronger, its contact between each other is delayed and so plating action is being controlled. However, the strong impact created by its collision can damage the external electrode's structure there by resulting to bad plating condition.
Surface morphology and optical properties such as transmittance and haze effect of glass etched by physical and chemical etching processes were investigated. The physical etching process was carried out by pen type sandblasting process with $15{\sim}20{\mu}m$ dia. of $Al_2O_3$ media; the chemical etching process was conducted using HF-based mixed etchant. Sandblasting was performed in terms of variables such as the distance of 8 cm between the gun nozzle and the glass substrate, the fixed air pressure of 0.5bar, and the constant speed control of the specimen stage. The chemical etching process was conducted with mixed etching solution prepared by combination of BHF (Buffered Hydrofluoric Acid), HCl, and distilled water. The morphology of the glass surface after sandblasting process displayed sharp collision vestiges with nonuniform shapes that could initiate fractures. The haze values of the sandblasted glass were quantitatively acceptable. However, based on visual observation, the desirable Anti-Glare effect was not achieved. On the other hand, irregularly shaped and sharp vestiges transformed into enlarged and smooth micro-spherical craters with the subsequent chemical etching process. The curvature of the spherical crater increased distinctly by 60 minutes and decreased gradually with increasing etching time. Further, the spherical craters with reduced curvature were uniformly distributed over the etched glass surface. The haze value increased sharply up to 55 % and the transmittance decreased by 90 % at 60 minutes of etching time. The ideal haze value range of 3~7 % and transmittance value range of above 90 % were achieved in the period of 240 to 720 minutes of etching time for the selected concentration of the chemical etchant.
Implantable biodegradable wafers were prepared with pamidronate -loaded poly (L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA, 75 : 25 mole ratio by lactide to glycolide, molecular weight : 20000 and 90000 g/mole) by direct compression method for the sustained release of pamidronate to investigate the possibility for the treatment of bone resorption. Pamidronate-loaded PLGA powders were prepared by means of physical mixing and spray drying with the control of formulation factors and characterized by scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffractometer. The pamidronate-loaded PLGA powders fabricated into wafers by direct compression under the constant pressure and time at room temperature. These wafers were also observed for their structural characteristic, release pattern, and degradation pattern. The release rate of pamidronate increased with increasing their initial loading ratio as well as increasing wafer thickness. The molecular weight of PLGA affects the release pattern : the higher molecular weight of PLGA, the faster release rate. It can be explained that the higher viscosity of high molecular PLGA solution at same concentration tends to aggregate PLGA and pamidronate resulting in unstable pharmaceutical dosage form. This system had advantages in terms of simplicity in design and obviousness of drug release rate and nay be useful as an implantable dosage form for the treatment of aural cholesteatoma.

Purpose: The development of compact tractors that can be used in dry fields, greenhouses, and orchards for pest control, weeding, transportation, and harvesting is necessary. The development and performance evaluation of power transmission units are very important when it comes to tractor development. This study evaluates the performance of a driving power transmission unit of a 50 kW multi-purpose narrow tractor. Methods: The performance of the transmission and forward-reverse clutch, which are the main components of the driving power transmission unit of multi-purpose narrow tractors, was evaluated herein. The transmission performance was evaluated in terms of power transmission efficiency, noise, and axle load, while the forward-reverse clutch performance was evaluated in terms of durability. The transmission's power transmission efficiency accounts for the measurement of transmission losses, which occur in the transmission's gear, bearing, and oil seal. The motor's power was input in the transmission's input shaft. The rotational speed and torque were measured in the final output shaft. The noise was measured at each speed level after installing a microphone on the left, right, and upper sides. The axle load test was performed through a continuous equilibrium load test, in which a constant load was continuously applied. The forward-reverse clutch performance was calculated using the engine torque to axle torque ratio with the assembled engine and transmission. Results: The loss of power in the transmission efficiency test of the driving power unit was 6.0-9.7 kW based on all gear steps. This loss of horsepower was equal to 11-18% of the input power (52 kW). The transmission efficiency of the driving power unit was 81.5-89.0%. The noise of the driving power unit was 50-57 dB at 800 rpm, 70-77 dB at 1600 rpm, and 76-83 dB at 2400 rpm. The axle load test verified that the input torque and axle revolutions were constant. The results of the forward-reverse clutch performance test revealed that hydraulic pressure and torque changes were stably maintained when moving forward or backward, and its operation met the hydraulic design standards. Conclusions: When comprehensively examined, these research results were similar to the main driving power transmission systems from USA and Japan in terms of performance. Based on these results, tractor prototypes are expected to be created and supplied to farmhouses after going through sufficient in-situ adaptability tests.

Purpose : In contrast with traditional time-cycled, pressure-limited ventilation, during volume-controlled ventilation, a nearly constant tidal volume is delivered with reducing volutrauma and the episodes of hypoxemia. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of pressure-regulated, volume controlled ventilation (PRVC) to Synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation (SIMV) in VLBW infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS).Methods : 34 very low birth weight (VLBW) infants who had RDS were randomized to receive either PRVC or SIMV with surfactant administration : PRVC group (n=14) and SIMV group (n=20). We compared peak inspiratory pressure (PIP), duration of mechanical ventilation, and complications associated with ventilation, respectively with medical records. Results : There were no statistical differences in clinical characteristics between the groups. After surfactant administration, PIP was significantly lower during PRVC ventilation for 48hrs and accumulatevive value of decreased PIP was higher during PRVC ventilation for 24hrs (P<0.05). Duration of ventilation and incidence of complications was no significant difference. Conclusion : PRVC is the mode in which the smallest level of PIP required to deliver the preset tidal volume in VLBW infants with RDS, adaptively responding to compliance change in lung after surfactant replacement.

Principles of a novel pulse growing method are described. The method realized in the crystal growing on a seed from melts under raw melt feeding provided a more reliable control of the crystallization process when producing large alkali halide crystals. The slow natural convection of the melt in the crucible at a constant melt level is intensified by rotating the crucible, while the crystal rotation favors a more symmetrical distribution of thermal stresses over the crystal cross-section. Optimum rotation parameters for the crucible and crystal have been determined. The spatial position oi the solid/liquid phase interface relatively to the melt surface, heaters and the crucible elements are considered. Basing on that consideration, a novel criterion is stated, that is, the immersion extent of the crystallization front (CF) convex toward the melt. When the crystal grows at a <> CF immersion, the raised CF may tear off from the melt partially or completely due to its weight. This results in avoid formation in the crystal. Experimental data on the radial crystal growth speed are discussed. This speed defines the formation of a gas phase layer at the crystal surface. The layer thickness il a function of time a temperature at specific values of pressure in the furnace and the free melt surface dimensions in the gap between the crystal and crucible wall. Analytical expressions have been derived for the impurity component mass transfer at the steady-state growth stage describing two independent processes, the impurity mass transfer along the <> path and its transit along the <> one. The heater (and thus the melt) temperature variation is inherent in any control system. It has been shown that when random temperature changes occur causing its lowering at a rate exceeding $0.5^{\circ}C/min$, a kind of the CF decoration by foreign impurities or by gas bubbles takes place. Short-term temperature changes at one heater or both result in local (i.e., at the front) redistribution of the preset axial growth speed.
