  • Generally, in case of constructing the embankments on the soft clay layers, one-dimensional consolidation settlement under the assumption of a middle position stress in a single layer makes a great difference with the integral value, ie. the final settlement. Consequently, to find how many equal segments of the soft clay layer are needed to converge into the integral value and which position should be taken as a position of mean stress, authors compared the theoretical value of the settlement due to one-dimensional consolidation with the practical value of the settlement due to two dimensional consolidation. The obtained results are as follows. 1) The practical value of the two-dimensional consolidation settlement can be estimated by the 74-83% theoretical value of the one-dimensional consolidation settlement. 2) When the soft clay layer was cut into 8-16 equal segments according to the depth, one-dimensional consolidation settlement converge into the integral value. 3) Assuming a total soft clay layer as a single one, the depth of a mean stress position is 0.29-0.37 of the thickness of the total soft clay layer. 4) The Hyperbola Method which presumes the long-term settlement from the short-term practical value of settlement is credible, because all practical value of the settlement are in safe side of the standard error of estimation and the correlation coefficient is up to 0.95.

  • An individual vacuum consolidation system has gained a popularity for a ground improvement of soft clayey soil. Finite element anaylses have been performed to simulate the individual vacuum consolidation system using a Plaxis 2D. The modelling procedures of the vacuum consolidation system are presented with the results of an unit-cell analysis. In addition, a case study was carried out to assess the applicability of the Plaxis 2D for simulating the consolidation behavior of soft ground subjected to the individual vacuum pressure.

  • This study evaluated the stability and deformation subsea foundation after implementation of the contaminant isolation method by covering the contaminated materials using Zeolite and sands under subsea condition. The appropriate contaminant adsorption materials used in this study was selected as Zeolite based on the existing research results due to its efficiency. Safety (or stability) was evaluated by calculation and to analyze deformation after completing the contaminant isolation method. The minimum safety factors from slope stability analyses results were 30.1 and 11.2 depending on subsea submerged conditions and the amount of the maximum primary consolidation settlement from consolidation analysis results was 209.2 mm. In addition, change of consolidation amount with increasing consolidation time was evaluated based on consolidation degree.

  • This paper describes a systematic way of identifying the horizontal coefficient of consolidation of clayey soil by applying an optimization technique to the early part of dissipation data measured from the self-boring pressuremeter strain holding test. An analytical solution developed by Randolph & Wroth (1979) was implemented in normalized form to express the build-up of excess pore pressures as a function of the rigidity index and subsequent dissipation of excess pore pressures around a pressuremeter Horizontal coefficient of consolidation was determined by minimizing the differences between theoretical and measured excess pore pressure curves over 50% degree of dissipation range using optimization technique. The effectiveness of the proposed back-analysis method was examined against the real fled performances obtained from pressuremeter strain holding tests at Gimje and Yangsan site. It is shown that the proposed back-analysis method can evaluates the rational horizontal coefficient of consolidation, which is similar to those obtained from the piezocone dissipation test. Furthermore, proposed method can evaluate appropriate coefficient of consolidation for soil under partially drained condition.

  • The costal reclamation construction is for making reclaimed land by dredging marine clay with seawater, and then bringing the dredged soil into the reclaimed land. During the process, the dredged soil in the reclaimed land undergoes the sedimentation-consolidation process. Among the processes, the consolidation is a very critical factor when planning reclaimed land because of its requiring time and settlement. In order to predict the requiring time and settlement, the Column test, which was suggested by Yano, has been usually used in the nation. However, the test method needs a very long time to identify the characteristic of sedimentation-consolidation of dredged soil. Therefore, in this study, in order to supplement the weakness of the Column test which needs such a long time, and in order to identify the characteristic of the sedimentation-consolidation for dredged soil in a short time, the Geo-centrifuge test was examined as an alternative method. The result considered that Geo-centrifuge test would be useful to identify the characteristic of sedimentation-consolidation for dredged soil efficiently.

  • When a saturated clay is sampled in an undisturbed manner from a bore hole, the sample extends vertically and shrinks horizontally under undrained conditions due to stress release. The conventional consolidation test specimen is trimmed from the expanded sample so that its diameter is equal to the inner diameter of the consolidation test ring, and this test procedure does not reproduce the actual consolidation behavior. The measurement of sample extension was conducted by means of overcoring method showed that the extension strains were 1 to 2%. To simulate the in-situ consolidation behavior, we proposed the consolidation test method that uses a specimen with a slightly smaller diameter than the inside diameter of consolidometer so that the specimen expands laterally to the inside of the ring.

  • Metal matrix composites(MMCs) are increasingly attractive for high technology components such as aerospace applications and transportations due to their high strength, stiffness, and toughness. Many processes for fabricating MMCs have been developed, and relatively simple Foil-Fiber-Foil method is usually employed in solid state consolidation processes. During the consolidation processes at high temperature, densification occurs by the inelastic flow of the matrix materials, and the process is coupled with the conditions of pressure, temperature and volume fraction of fiber and matrix materials. This is particularly important in titanium matrix composites, and thus a generic model based on micro-mechanical approaches enabling the evolution of density over time to be predicted has been developed. The mode developed is then implemented into FEM so that practical process simulation has been carried out. Further the experimental investigation of the consolidation behavior of SiC/Ti-6Al-4V composites using vacuum hot pressing has been performed, and the results obtained are compared with the model predictions.

  • The rate of coating consolidation influences the operation of several coating methods and the final quality of the coating layer. The rate of coating consolidation is characterized with a dynamic gloss meter at short times for a thin coating layer applied to the base sheet of interest. During the coating consolidation process, the laser gloss meter response curve exhibits two critical turning points that indicate the two coating immobilization points defined by the traditional methods. Five base sheets with several different coating suspensions are characterized. A model is proposed to estimate the rate of consolidation based on physical properties of the coating suspension, the base paper, and the liquid phase of the coating. The paper properties, especially the contact angle, are found to be an important factor in determining rate of consolidation. The model predicts the correct trends for the different coating suspensions and base sheets. The test method, along the model, can be used to determine the filtercake resistance of the coating layer for a thin and rapidly formed filtercake.

  • The ultimate settlement of soft clay consists of three parts: $\circled1$ immediate settlement, S$\sub$d/; $\circled2$ Primary consolidation settlement, S$\sub$c/; $\circled3$ Secondary consolidation settlement, S$\sub$s/. In general, S$\sub$c/ can be accurately calculated by one-dimensional consolidation and S$\sub$s/ or S$\sub$d/ may be ignored. This paper focuses on a calculation method to estimate the immediate settlement induced by lateral deformation of subgrade, to which shear stress is applied by embankment on soft ground. Immediate settlement and consolidation settlement are discussed by comparing the field measurement of the Yangsan test embankment on treated soft foundation by vertical paper drains.

  • Pioneering work by Terzaghi imparted scientific and mathematical bases to many aspects of this subject and many people use this theory to measure the consolidation settlement until now. In this paper, Finite Difference Methods for consolidation are considered. First, it is shown the stability criterion of Explicit scheme and the Crank-Nicolson scheme, although unconditionally stable in the mathematical sense, produces physically unrealistic solutions when the time step is large. it is also shown that The Fully Implicit scheme shows more satisfactory behavior, but is less accurate for small time steps. and then we need to decide what scheme is more proper to consolidation. The purpose of this paper is to suggest the pertinent scheme to consolidation.
