  • The conduct of research in the area of child abuse and neglect is one of the most difficult tasks in social science research. One requirement for maltreatment research is knowledge of the type and amount of exposure to child abuse or neglect. This paper addressed methodological and ethical consideration that are especially pertinent to research about child maltreatment. Issues of the subject recruitment, informed consent, confidentiality, and reporting that arises in the course of carrying out such research were discussed. Additional work is needed to implement definitional, legal, and ethical guidelines for hose who study child abuse to help clarify some of the complexity inherent in work in this field.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of the removable ankle-foot orthosis (RAFO) which was developed to improve the gait of stroke patients. The subjects of this study were five stroke patients who agreed to participate in this study by signing a written consent form. To verify gait improvement after wearing the orthosis, a Timed Up and Go test and Functional Gait Assessment were performed, and spatiotemporal gait variables such as gait speed, cadence, stride length, double limb support, and the efficient gait test of body sway angle were performed. For every variable, the differences prior to and after wearing the RAFO were compared using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Every gait variable improved significantly after wearing the RAFO compared to prior to wearing it. The pilot study will enhance future efforts to evaluate orthotic function objectively during gait in stroke patients.

  • Purpose: We investigated the effects of physical practice, mental practice, and cross education using serial reaction time (SRT). We recruited 21 right-handed healthy males and females who gave consent and had no clinical history for their upper limbs. Methods: The subjects were divided into three groups; actual practice (n=7), mental practice (n=7), and controls (n=7), who performed actual training, mental training, or no intervention respectively for three weeks. Super lab 4.0 displayed four symbols on the monitor and subjects pushed on the matching button, with reaction time assessed pre- and post-intervention. Results: Reaction time was significantly lower after actual or mental practice (p<0.05). Actual practice also decreased left hand reaction time. Conclusion: Actual practice and mental practice can improve motor learning, but mental practice is not sufficient for cross education.

  • Clinical trials in neonates of different gestational age, birth weight, postnatal age and general health status are needed to assure safe and optimal evidence-based-therapy to this special population. Pharmacodynamic maturation must be considered in grouping the neonates for clinical trials. Informed consent from the parents, protection of the neonates participating in the clinical trials, adherence to good clinical practice guidelines, and designation of short term and long term outcomes must be taken into consideration from the beginning of the trials. Collaboration between centers will be helpful in overcoming the problem with small patient size. Many of these challenges are surmountable and an well-designed clinical trial will improve the mortality and morbidity in these very small children.

  • It is well known that FTA increases consumer welfare. However, it is difficult to analyze consumer welfare effects of FTA for item by item because of the difficulty in data collection. In this respect, this study aims at analyzing the types of increasing consumer welfares with item by item. According to the result of the study, there are five types of consumer welfare increased by FTA, and the items are like below: banana, kiwi, octopus, wine, and etc. However, it is hard for consumer to feel effects of FTA directly for several reasons. The problem of distribution structure of imported goods and, tariff reductions over long period are parts of the reasons to reduce the consumer wealfare effects. And the lack of consumer awareness about imported goods also reduces them. In order to promote FTA more efficiently, this study suggests that the government must improve the problems mentioned because consumer consent is essential element for further FTA promotion.
