  • In today's information-rich society, the need for information literacy has urgency. Three tasks of information processing are filtering, meaning-matching, meaning-construction that could be strengthened through inquiry-based learning. The cycles of reflection and practice develop the habit of mind, or conscious information processing that allow the learners to acquire higher level of information literacy. An on-line inquiry-based learning environment designed for information literacy may help learners to perform their lifelong learning better with the ability to appreciate, locate, evaluate, and use information effectively.

  • Chronic periodontitis is one of the most common diseases in clinical dentistry, which requires various surgical interventions to treat the moderately to severely destructed supporting periodontium. Most patients have anxiety and fear to these surgical procedures and dentists often have problems dealing with these patients. By applying the conscious sedation technique in outpatient units, periodontists have become able to manage their patients successfully with less anxiety or fear. Also, we have experienced the increased level of patients' satisfaction. Generally, periodontal treatments are time consuming procedures and patients are usually reluctant to the periodontal instruments. This study is focused on the sedation procedure with intravenous midazolam infusion performed in Department of Periodontology of Ewha Womans University Hospital. Using questionnaires, we evaluated 80 randomly selected patients for the anxiolytic effect of intravenous midazolam. Anxiety control using IV sedation was very helpful in performing various periodontal reconstructive and advanced surgical procedures in implant dentistry.

  • Background and Objectives : Though voice therapy is proven to be effective in academia, treatment results and satisfaction level are inconsistent in clinics. The inconsistency may rise from diverse vocal cords misuse patterns in patient population as they suffer from different diseases or have bad phonation habits. In order to overcome the limitation, we uniformized patients' vocal cords with injection laryngoplasty prior to voice therapy. The efficacy of voice therapy and consistency in treatment results after injection laryngoplasty were assessed. Materials and Methods : Patients diagnosed with vocal nodules were either treated with injection laryngoplasty followed by voice therapy (combined treatment group) or voice therapy only (voice therapy group). Each group consisted of 15 patients. Acoustic measures (jitter, shimmer, NHR), aerodynamic measures (MPT, Psub, MAFR), and subjective auditory conscious measures (K-VHI, K-VRQOL) between two groups were analyzed. Results : After treatments, both groups improved in terms of acoustic, aerodynamic, and subjective auditory conscious measures compared to pre-treatment. Combined treatment group had statistically significantly greater improvement in shimmer, P in K-VHI, and PF in K-VRQOL compared to voice therapy group. Conclusion : Injection laryngoplasty treatment prior to voice therapy synergizes in treating patients compared to voice therapy only.

  • Purpose: The purpose was to assess the usefulness of midazolam in patients undergoing minor oral surgery under conscious sedation. Materials and methods: Bispectral index was examined in 20 patients receiving oral minor surgery with conscious sedation supplemented with local anesthesia. All patients included were ASA I and had no contraindications to the study medications. The patients were escorted to the day surgery operation room where, before the commencement of the sedation and surgical procedures, routine monitoring was applied, including the noninvasive monitoring of arterial blood pressure, arterial oxygen saturation, and 3-lead electrocardiogram (Electrocardiogram). Bispectral index electrodes were applied on the frontotemporal region after cleansing the skin with alcohol. Bispectral index was calculated with the Electrocardiogram monitor (A-2000; Aspect Co.). Midazolam was then titrated (initially 3mg wait 2min and 2mg). Vital sign and Bispectral index checked every 5 minute until the end of the procedure. The results were then compared. Results: The Bispectral index index values throughout the sedation study period alter many level. The index was dropped at 5 minutes after administration, but raised at injection and odontomy procedure. During the operation, mean Bispectral index index was higher than conscious sedation index range($60{\sim}80$). The amnesic effect was shown 17 cases out of 20 cases(85%). Conclusion: Conscious sedation technique using midazolma is a safe and effective method of controlling behavior in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

  • The main objective of this research is how they recognize the face appearance before and after the make-up, based upon the survey on the female college students of their 20s (221 College students in Daegu metropolitan City), who are very conscious about their appearance. In addition, it is to provide the fundamental findings, which are necessary to establish the appearance management of self-concept through the make-up. The results are as follows: About 78% of subjects are performing the make-up on daily basis or needs basis, and 91.6% of the subjects wanted to have more elegant and improved make-up. Comparing the self-satisfaction level before and after the make-up, the satisfaction level on their appearance has been very much improved to 77.2% after the make-up, while the level was 28.8% before the make-up. It has been found out that the purpose of the make-up is more appreciated in pursuing the self-concept, rather than pursuing the beauty. Also we revealed that they could achieve a certain level of psychological stability by improving each individual's social image. We also found out that the stylish and modern style of image contributed more to the satisfaction level of make-up, compared with the image of neatness, individuality, delicacy, or youthfulness.
