During a study of harpacticoid copepods from Korea, one species of the family Orthopsyllidae was found by rinsing macroalgae collected from the intertidal and subtidal zones at Hangaechang, Munseum Islet in Jeju Island of Korea. The Orthopsyllus is closely related to Orthopsyllus linearis curvaspinata Mielke, 1993, however it is distinguished from the original description by the combined characters of slightly slender caudal seta V in the female, relatively short and ovoid caudal ramus, the seta formula of P3, and the length of P2 and P4 endopod in the male. Since Orthopsyllus linearis (Claus, 1866) is notorious for its incomplete previous descriptions and therefore its polymorphic status, it is premature to fix the status of present Orthopsyllus species from Korea, without the detailed comparative study among the congeners. However due to the urgent need for the report of the genus in the region, we report this species as Orthopsyllus linearis (Claus, 1866) like but different one within the genus: Orthopsyllus cf. linearis (Claus,1866). This is the first report of the genus Orthopsyllus for the first time in Korea.
Acanthochondria spirigera is redescribed based on the specimens recovered from the Lophiomus setigerus in the southern coast of Korea. This parasitic copepoda is distinguished from congeners by the possession of spirally twisted egg-strings. Acanthochondria spirigera(Chondracanthidae, Poecilostomatoida) is the first recorded species from Korea. This parasitic copepod was not found on the fish in May. Relative density and prevalence also decreased from January to May. A. spirigera live symbiotically within the pharyngeal cavity of the L. setigerus, and eat oesophageal mucous string of their hosts. The male of the parasitic copepoda is dwarf, and found on the ventral surface of genital segment of the female.
Bioaccumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides was studied in sediment dwelling bivalves, Manila clams (Ruditapes philippinarum), collected from the midwestern coast of Korea. As witnessed by the dominance of tetra- to penta-chlorinated congeners in sediments and the penta- to hexa-chlorinated congener dominance in clams, the profile of PCBs in the sediments and Manila clams differed. Lipid and organic carbon-normalized biota-sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) were determined for organochlorine pesticides. BSAFs of $\beta$-hexachlorocyclohexane ($\beta$-HCH) and $\Sigma$DDTs were in the range of 0.06~1.36 and 0.31~1.06. No clear relationships were found between BSAFs of $\Sigma$DDTs in Manila clams and the concentrations of DDTs in the associated sediment. The accumulated PCBs and organochlorine pesticides were compared in Manila clams and oysters (Crassostrea gigas) collected from 3 sites. Highly chlorinated PCBs were more commonly found in oyster tissues than in clam tissues. The reasons for the different accumulation pattern of organic pollutants in the two organisms are discussed.

Atmospheric concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners were measured every two weeks from July, 1999 to January, 2000 at Hankyong University in Ansung, Kyounggi-do. Atmospheric concentrations of ∑$_{24}$PCB showed a range of 19.8~71.9 pg/m3. The highest concentration of PCB homolog was tri-CBs (sum of PCB 18, 27, 28, 33, 38) which had a comparatively higher vapor pressure than other homologs. The contribution ratio of lighter PCB homologs (tri-CBs) to total PCBs was 44.5%, and these homologs were the main components of PCBs. The ratio PCB homologs/deca-CB (PCB 209) suggested that the contribution of vapor phase PCBs increased greatly in summer relative to other seasons. In addition, the regression lines for PCB homologs/deca-CB (PCB 209) and temperature ($^{\circ}C$) appeared as an exponential function with high correlation (R2>0.67, p< 0.01). This suggests that the concentration of vapor phase PCB homologs increases steeply with increasing temperature.
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were measured in soil samples of Ansung in Kyonggi-province to investigate concentration distribution of PBDEs and PCBs. The 10 soil samples were collected using a stainless steel hand-held corer that was cleaned before and after each sample using hexane. Total concentration of PBDE and PCBs were 2,205.3 and 348.1 pg/g dry weight (DW) in soil sample, respectively. BDE-209 showed as the most abundant congener in soil samples which was related to imported amount and usage amount of deca-BDE technical mixture in Korea. Also, BDE-99, BDE-47, BDE-100 deposition in soil sample was higher than other congeners and was related to the imported and usage amount reported for penta-BDE technical mixture in Korea. Correlation coefficient between PBDE contribution and technical mixture formulation (Bromokal 70-5DE) were significant (r=0.91, p<0.01) which suggests the influence of sources in this technical mixtures.
Monophyly and intergeneric relationships of the tribe Helleboreae, sensu Tamura, and related genera were studied using a 1,100-bp segment at the 5'end of the 26S ribosomal RNA gene. Forty-one OTUs, including eight species of the Helleboreae, were either directly sequenced or obtained from previous publications. Data were analyzed using distance and discrete character methods to infer phylogenetic relationships among the included taxa. The inferred phylogeny did not support monophyly of either Helleboreae or Cimicifugeae whose members were intermixed in our inferred phylogeny. This result is congruent with our previous study, which recommended against finely subdividing, suprageneric higher taxa within the R-chromosome group (subfamily Ranuncluloideae, sensu lato) until more molecular data were accumulated. Our data convincingly suggest the presence of the following three monophyletic groups: the Cimicifuga group (the clade of Actaea, Cimicifuga, Souliea, Eranthis, Anemonopsis, and Beesia), the Trollius group (the clade of Trollius, Megaleranthis, Adonis), and a clade including Anemonopsis and Beesia. Our data also suggest that Trollius and Megaleranthis might be congeners and Eranthis a paraphyletic group.
A new species of the Cletopsyllidae belonging to the genus Isocletopsyllus Huys and Lee, 1999 is described from the materials collected from subtidal sandy bottoms at Jeju Island and Ulleung Island, Korea. So far, only two species of the genus Isocletopsyllus, viz. I. tertius (Por, 1964) from Israel and I. quartus (Soyer, 1966) from Banyuls-sur-Mer (France) are recorded, both from the Mediterranean Ocean. The new species can be clearly distinguished from its congeners by the combination of the following characters: (1) female antennule with a large process on the outer margin of first segment, (2) caudal rami with a bulbous proximal inner expansion, and shorter than those of other species (about four times long as wide in the new species), (3) second segment of P1 exopod with a short rod-like inner seta, (4) sexual dimorphism presented in the second endopodal segment of male P2, not in exopod of P4, and (6) female P5 with a very long exopod with very short second outer seta. A table comparing the modifications of swimming legs in the family Cletopsyllidae Huys and Lee, 1999 is presented. This is the first record of this family from Korea.

We collected seven species of shellfish; all originating from the southern coastal areas of Korea, from a market every three months from Dec. 2001 to Sept. 2002, and determined the total polychlorinated biphenyl(PCB) levels by the sum of 26 individual congener levels. A GC-ECD system was applied for identification and quantification of these PCB congeners. Mussel showed the highest level in Sept. 2002 at 34.5 ng/g dry weight(d.w.). All species except mussel showed the lowest total PCB level in Dec. 2001 and their levels in tissue ranged from 0.6 to 5.5 ng/g d.w. The total PCB levels ranged from 0.8 to 17.3 ng/g in Mar. 2002, 2.2 to 9.5 ng/g in June 2002, and 1.8 to 34.5 ng/g d.w. in Sept. 2002. The principal congener group was penta-CBs, which accounted for 32% of the total PCBs, followed by hexa-CBs at 23%, and tetra-CBs at 21%.
The structure of thiamphenicol, one of the congeners of chloramphenicol which is a well-known antibiotic, has been determined by single crystal x-ray diffraction techniques. The crystal structure was determined using diffractometer data obtained by the $2{\theta}:{\omega}$ scan technique with $MoK{\alpha}$ radiation from a crystal having space group symmetry $P2_{1}2_{1}2_{1}$, and unit cell parameters a = 5.779, b = 15.292 and c = 17.322 ${\AA}$ . The structure was solved by direct methods and refined by least squares to an R = 0.070 for the 2116 reflections. The overall V-shaped conformation of thiamphenicol revealed in this study is consistent with those from the crystallographic studies and the proposed models from the theoretical and nmr studies of chloramphenicol. However there is no intramolecular hydrogen bond and the propanediol moiety is fully extended in the thiamphenicol molecule, while the crystal structures of chloramphenicol show the existence of the hydrogen bond between the two hydroxyl groups of the propanediol moiety forming an acyclic ring. All of the thiamphenicol molecules in the crystal are linked by a threedimensional hydrogen bonding network.
A new marine interstitial nematode species belonging to the subgenus Quadricoma of order Desmoscolecida is described from Jindo Island, South Korea. The new species, Tricoma (Quadricoma) jindoensis sp. nov., is most allied with T. (Q.) crassicomoides Timm, 1970 in sharing the similar cephalic setae, broadly truncated border of head, lip region including 6 labial papillae, and slender and long spicule among the seven congeners with 44 quadricomoid rings. However, T. (Q.) jindoensis differs from it by the globular protuberance on the penultimate ring, 7 tail rings, and 9 pairs of subdorsal setae in male. This is the first record of Quadricoma nematodes from East Asia.
