Incomplete combustion due to quenching in a narrow confinement has been a major problem for realization of a reliable micro combustion device. In most micro combustors, effects of flows are absent in the quenching because the flow is laminar and no severe stretch is present. In such circumstance, quenching is caused either by heat loss or by removal of active radicals to the wall surface of the confinement. An experimental investigation was carried out to investigate the relative significance of these two causes of quenching of a premixed flame. A premixed jet burner with a rectangular cross section at the exit was built. At the burner exit, the flame stands between two walls with adjustable distance. The gap between the two walls at which quenching occurs was measured at different wall surface conditions. The results were analyzed to estimate the relative significance of heat loss to the wall and the removal of radicals at the surface. The measurements indicated that the quenching distance was independent of the wall surface characteristics such as oxygen vacancy, grain boundary, or impurities at low temperature. At high temperature, however, the surface characteristics strongly affect the quenching distance, implying that radical removal at the wall plays a significant role in the quenching process.

This paper is to provide an analysis of the aspectual nature of naked infinitives(NIs) of English perceptual reports. Higginbotham(1983) proposes that only ‘active’ or ‘transient’ verbs can be used as NIs of English perceptual reports, but ‘state’ verbs cannot. This is called “confinement to the active or transient”. But there will be one problem when NIs of English perceptual reports are negatives. This is why the meaning of negative NIs of English perceptual reports may be static, which isn't in line with “confinement to the active or transient”. There are similar problems with ‘state’ NIs of English perceptual reports. In this paper some of these problems can be solved with the “Event Structure” of Pustejovsky(1991). According to Pustejovsky(1991), ‘process’ and ‘transition’ verbs have sub-eventual individuation units, but state verbs have no such units. It is the units that make it possible for ‘process’ and ‘transition’ to be perceived. As a result ‘process’ and ‘transition’ verbs are suitable for NIs of English perceptual reports. Nevertheless, there are still some problems unsolved. Moreover some state verbs are grammatically used as NIs of English perceptual reports. This paper proposes that these state verbs have “potentiality of transition”, and the potentiality comes from only the combination of the two parts of the complement - the subject and the naked infinitive. And the potentiality causes the “Event Structure” of Pustejovsky(1991) to be modified. And this modification makes it possible for us to explain aspect of NIs of English Perceptual Reports. It is concluded with some implication for Korean learners of English as a Foreign Language.
This essay aims to develop a critical approach of interpretation in examining the panoptical condition of representation that is said to permeate the tradition of modern realism in novels and paintings. In defining this approach, I am interested in the problem or inability of panoptical representation to tell a coherent story of solitude(solitary confinement, isolation, self-absorption, etc.) in a range of texts from prison documents to paintings and novels, and also what might occasion such an inability including social, material, or stylistic contradictions and conflicting epistemological angles. This task potentially anticipates a trajectory of readings and investigations that cuts through the history of panoptical representation, which is outside the scope of this essay. In this writing, I will engage in a series of debates with what I consider as major theories and views of panoptical representation offered by Jeremy Bentham, John Bender, and Michael Fried. Based on this, I will formulate a conceptual or methodological frame of discourse that would envisage an anti-panoptical approach of interpretation. As an attempt to validate this formulation, I will offer a reading of Henry Mayhew's Criminal Prisons of London and Scenes of Prison Life(1862), a case of panoptical representation that produces a peculiar sense of ambivalence while accounting for sites of penal solitude.

In many industrial practices it is an important problem to discharge a high-pressure exhaust gas to the atmosphere without generating a loud noise and much vibration. This may be achieved by confining a shock system inside the exhaust duct with a double orifice. The objective of the current work is to develop a new treatment method for the high-pressure exhaust gases. A theoretical analysis was applied to one-dimensional, steady. viscous, compressible model flowfield, and an experiment was performed using a shock tunnel facility. The results showed that the total pressure drop increases with a decrease of the opening area of the upstream orifice, and the shock confinement to the duct is possible by decreasing the opening area of the downstream orifice.
Since existing constitutive models developed for confined normal strength concrete overestimate ductility when they are applied to confined high strength concrete, these models cannot be directly applied to confined high strength concrete. In an effort to solve this problem, an accurate stress-strain relationship of the hihg strength concrete needs to be formulated by examining the confinement effects due to increase of the concrete strength. In this study, a constitutive model is developed to express the stress-strain relationship of confined high strength concrete by carrying out regression analysis of the main parameters affection strength and ductile behavior of reinforced high strength concrete columns. Twenty-five test specimens were chosen from the reported experimental studies in the literature. The experimental results of stress-strain relationships of show a good agreement with results of the stress-strain relationships of suggested high strength concrete, covering a strength range between 60 and 124 MPa.

Structural analysis used to evaluate the load carrying capacity of a bridge should implement behavioral characteristics similar to the actual behaviors of the structure through loading tests, but it is not feasible in many cases due to the behavioral characteristics of points, inadequate modeling method in structural analysis, errors in loading tests, changes in strength and rigidity resulting from cross-sectional damage, etc. This problem can be more serious if bridge bearings have been damaged or were not installed and, consequently, the bearings do not function properly. This study produced results similar to actual behaviors using a structural analysis model built with support moment derived from the difference $\Delta{\delta}$ between measured deflection obtained by confining the cantilever segment of a solid beam and calculated deflection under a unrestrained condition. When the load carrying capacity of a bridge in operation was evaluated in consideration of the confinement condition of supports, the result was 15~19% lower than load carrying capacity calculated by the existing method.
The stone columns are increasingly being used as a soil improvement method for supporting a wide variety of structures (such as road embankment, buildings, storage tanks etc.) especially built on soft soil. Soil improvement by the stone column method overcomes the settlement problem and low stability. Nevertheless, stone column in very soft soils may not be functional due to insufficient lateral confinement. The required lateral confinement can be overcome by encasing the stone column with a suitable geosynthetic. Encasement of stone columns with geogrid is one of the ideal forms of improving the performance of stone columns. This paper presents the results of a series of experimental tests and numerical analysis to investigate the behavior of stone columns with and without geogrid encasement in soft clay deposits. A total of six small scale laboratory tests were carried out using circular footing with diameters of 0.05 m and 0.1 m. In addition, a well-known available software program called PLAXIS was used to numerical analysis, which was validated by the experimental tests. After good validation, detailed of parametric studies were performed. Different parameters such as bearing capacity of stone columns with and without geogrid encasement, stiffness of geogrid encasement, depth of encasement from ground level, diameter of stone columns, internal friction angle of crushed stone and lateral bulging of stone columns were analyzed. As a result of this study, stone column method can be used in the improvement of soft ground and clear development in the bearing capacity of the stone column occurs due to geogrid encasement. Moreover, the bearing capacity is effected from the diameter of the stone column, the angle of internal friction, rigidity of the encasement, and depth of encasement. Lateral bulging is minimized by geogrid encasement and effected from geogrid rigidity, depth of encasement and diameter of the stone column.
Cosmic rays are ubiquitous in space, and are apparently present wherever the matter density is small enough that they are not removed by collisions with ambient particles. The essential similarity of their energy spectra in many different regions places significant general constraints on the mechanisms for their acceleration and confinement. Diffusive shock acceleration is at present the most successful acceleration mechanism proposed, and, together with transport in Kolmogorov turbulence, can account for the universal specta. In comparison to shock acceleration, statistical acceleration, invoked in many situations, has significant disadvantages. The basic physics of acceleration and transport are discussed, and examples shown where it apparently works very well. However, there are now well-established situations where diffusive shock acceleration cannot be the accelerator. This problem will be discussed and possible acceleration mechanism evaluated. Statistical acceleration in these places is possible. In addition, a new mechanism, called diffusive compression acceleration, will be discussed and shown to be an attractive candidate. It has similarities with both statistical acceleration and shock acceleration.
The hollow RC(Reinforced concrete) pier has decrease of weight and reduced of materials compared to solid RC pier. However, the hollow RC pier shows a low ductile behavior due to brittle failure of inside concrete. To overcome this problem, the internally confined hollow reinforced concrete column has been developed. In this study, the behavior of internally confined hollow RC piers were evaluated with safety ratio, ductility, total material cost, the total weight of the pier, etc. The chosen parameters for the study are hollow ratio, thickness of internal steel tube, intervals between vertical re-bars, numbers of horizontal re-bars, and strength of concrete.

The practice of splicing reinforcing bars in reinforced concrete structures to manage insufficient bar length is a common approach, which is mainly due to transportation limitations on bar length. The splicing of reinforcing bars side by side offers a simple and economical solution to the problem of continuity. This paper examines the influence of different structural parameters such as concrete cover, lap splice length, shear links confinement and concrete strength on the lap splices based on an extensive experimental database of laps and anchorage. The current study shows that increasing the lap splices beyond 50Ø has no additional benefit for increasing its strength. The results also show that relative to the measured stress, specimens with larger concrete side covers shows higher splice stress compared to the samples with smaller concrete covers.
