  • In this study, remote articulation training system which connects the hearing disabled trainee and the speech therapist via B-ISDN is introduced. The hearing disabled does not have the hearing feedback of his own pronuciation, and the chance of watching his speech organs movement trajectory will offer him the self-training of articulation. So the system has two purposes of self articulation training and trainer's on-line checking in remote place. We estimate the vocal tract articultory movements from the speech signal using inverse modelling and display the movement trajectoy on the sideview of human face graphically. The trajectories of trainees articulation is displayed along with the reference trajectories, so the trainee can control his articulating to make the two trajectories overlapped. For on-line communication and ckecking training record the system has the function of video conferencing and tranferring articulatory data.

  • Group communication on the Internet is exploding in popularity. Video conferencing, Enterprise IM, desktop sharing, and numerous forms of e-commerce are but a few examples of the ways in which the Internet is being used for business. The growing use of group communication has highlighted the need for advances in security. There are several approaches to securing user identities and other information transmitted over the Internet. One of the foundations of secure communication is key management, a building block for encryption, authentication, access control, and authorization.

  • The Internet is now of the fastest growing areas of telecommunications and of Computer Assisted Language Learning. It is rapidly becoming more integrated into society and accessible to people form around the world. A number of educators believe there is potential for language teaching and learning opportunities through the Internet, and have already developed uses and resources for this purpose. The range of what is available is growing continually. The purpose of this study is to research CMC via the Internet and other long-distance networks, to investigate the analyse best and worst things about studying English on the internet and to suggest some findings from the comparison between internet and classroom learning by means of questionnaire.

  • In this paper, we present an intensive patient monitoring service through the Internet, which enables medical doctors to watch their patients in a remote site, to monitor their vital signs and to give them some advices for first-aid treatment. The service consists of three service objects: Monitoring Information Service(MIS), Vital Sign Monitoring Service(VSMS) and Multimedia Consulting (MCS). Through the MIS, medical doctors can get information about the patients currently under monitoring, including their names, ages, genders, symptoms, current main complaints and current locations. The VSMS enables medical doctors to monitor in real-time patients' vital signs such as electrocardiogram (ECG), respiration, temperature, blood oxygen saturation (SpO$_{2}$), invasive blood pressure (IBP), and non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP). It also generates alarms when the patients are likely to be in a critical situation. The MCS provides a real-time multimedia desktop conferencing facility for watching patients and instructing attendants to administer some first-aid treatment. We carried out some experiments according to two different scenarios. The intensive patient monitoring service was functioning well in a 100Base-T Ethernet LAN environment.

  • KIPS is a net-world, cyberspace for scholars in Public Administration and Policy Sciences in WWW. All knowledge-intensive work has its core the publishing and debating of document. We have created a cyber forum for that work KIPS Cyber Forum has adapted ‘D3E’, the web-tool kit for non-technical users to easily debate and publish documents that exploit to the full networked interactive web media. And, for real-time communication, we added it the voice conferencing system. KIPS has opened Cyber Forum service in November 1998. The visitors on KWS Cyber Forum are increasingly growing, but the participants on the debate are a few. This means that the problems of Cyber Forum Service are not technical, but participation. The result imply that, at now, high participation of scholars on the debate is needed, at first, by the detailed guides for internet, www and relevant technical information. After that more expertly designed interface is to be important.

  • Recently, video conferencing, Web-casting service, and network sane service which use multicast-based service are popular in Internet. In order to support the broadband Internet services efficiently, more communication bandwidth are needed. The WDM single-hop broadcast network topology is coming into the spotlight in next-generation access networks area. In this paper, the new multicast scheduling algorithm, PGM, is proposed and is evaluated through the computer simulation. The PGM method shows the better performance comparing with existing multicast scheduling algorithm.

  • A remote maintenance system, which enables an engineer to check and treat machines installed at remote site with the help of data communication, has been developed. The maintenance of machines with the traveling of engineers is much costly in time and economically. With the developed system, the engineer at the remote site can diagnose malfunctioning machines. The remote maintenance system is composed of video conferencing system, camera control system and signal aquisition system. The developed system has been tested on the 100Mbps ATM network to evaluate its ability to diagnose remote machines.

  • One of the benefits of the internet-assisted instruction is that it can improve L2 Learners' motivation to express themselves in English. The purpose of this paper is to investigate an effective approach to British-American fiction learning in Korean universities, which can emphasize communicative strategies drawing on video-conferencing system, a chat system(CUSeeMe), and an e-mail system. Students are passive participants who cannot assert their creativity in the traditional teaching method of British-American fiction, which mainly relies upon reading and translation far from literature lessons. In CCDL(Cross-cultural distance learning) class, students can play active roles in asserting their own ideas and assuming considerable responsibility for making a presentation in English. A professor can play a role as a coordinator in supporting the students' activities and in winding up the class. The main significance of this article lies in providing a paradigm for CCDL class beyond the limitation of the traditional teaching method of British-American fiction in Korea and futhermore in exploring the eclectic integration of the traditional one and CCDL.

  • The motion-based video segmentation provides a powerful method of video compression, because it defines a region with similar motion, and it makes video compression system to more efficiently describe motion video. In this paper, we propose the Modified Fuzzy Competitive Learning Algorithm (MFCLA) to improve the traditional K-menas clustering algorithm to implement the motion-based video segmentation efficiently. The segmented region is described with the affine model, which consists of only six parameters. This affine model was calculated with optical flow, describing the movements of pixels by frames. This method could be applied in the low bit rate video transmission, such as video conferencing system.
