  • Effects of cone angle, pressure-hole orientation and Reynolds number on the five-hole probe calibration have been investigated for eight large-scale conical five-hole probes, which have either perpendicular pressure holes or forward-facing pressure holes for the cone angles of 45 deg, 60 deg, 75 deg and 90.deg. Pitch and yaw angles are changed from -40 deg to +40 deg with an interval of 5 deg, respectively, when the probe Reynolds numbers are 1.77*10$^{4}$, 3.53*10$^{4}$ and 7.06*10$^{4}$. The result shows that larger cone angle results in more sensitive changes in the calibration coefficients. In the case that the cone angle is 45 deg, the pitch-angle and yaw-angle coefficients of the five-hole probe with the perpendicular pressure holes show a very different trend compared with those of the five-hole probe with the forward-facing pressure holes. On the other hand, when the cone angle is more than 60 deg, each calibration coefficient is nearly independent of the pressure-hole orientation. Additionally, the effects of the Reynolds number on the calibration coefficients are also reported in detail.

  • In this study, the effect of cone angle of seven-hole probe on the accuracy of measured flow angle and velocity has been investigated. The seven-hole probe consisted of seven 1mm OD stainless inner tubes and one 3mm ID stainless tube. Six cone angles of $45^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, $75^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, $105^{\circ}$ and $120^{\circ}$ were tested. Calibrations of the seven-hole probes were conducted within ${\pm}60^{\circ}$ range with the interval of $5^{\circ}$. Analysis results show that the effect on the cone angle was not significant on the accuracy of the measured flow angle, pressure, and velocity. However, the data reduction method had more effect on the measurement accuracy.

  • The present study was carried out in order to develope a seven-hole pressure probe which is able to measure high flow angles. The seven-hole pressure probe is a non-nulling, directional velocity probe used for measuring three dimensional flow that having high flow angles. A 4 mm diameter seven-hole conical pressure probe was manufactured with a cone angle of 70$^{\circ}$. The probe was comprised of seven 1 mm diameter stainless steel tubes packed close together and fitted into an outer stainless steel sleeve. The calibration procedure is based on the use of the Callington's polynomial curve-fit method. The validity of the seven-hole conical pressure probe is demonstrated by comparisons with hot-wire data.

  • Electrical resistivity is applied for understanding details about layers and obtaining basic properties of soils to various measurement devices. The objective of this study is development of TRP(Temperature-compensated Resistivity Probe), analysis about effects of temperature changes during cone penetration test, and observation of characteristics of cone penetration. In order to observation of temperature changes according to a diameter difference of resistivity cone probe, the cone which has wedge type cone tip is made to two types, 2mm and 5mm. Temperature sensor is attached at 15mm below from cone tip because of an electrical interference with elecrical resistance probe. Delectrical connector is used to prevent electric disturbance between motor type penetrating machine and electrical resistivity cone probe. Application tests are carried out in acrylic cell whose diameter is 30cm with uniform Jumunjin sand according to densification caused by blows. The test results indicate that the temperature is increased uniformly during penetration and a tendency, characteristics of cone penetration, is discovered during altering state of soils. This study suggests that the temperature effects and characteristics of penetration should be considered in penetrating tests in order to conduct an accurate ground investigation using TRP(Temperature-compensated Resistivity Probe).

  • Various rheological methods to measure the hardness of instant cooked rice by a texture analyzer were investigated and compared. Specifically, instant white rice samples with a wide range of hardness were subjected to four different rheological tests with disk, cylinder, rod, and cone probe whose results were inter-correlated. All the measurements demonstrated that the hardness of instant rice was reduced with increasing moisture content and showed negatively linear relationships. Out of the four tests applied in this study, the highest coefficient of correlation ($R^2=0.9268$) was observed distinctly in the cone probe test, where both compressive and shear forces can be applied to deform individual rice grains. However, the cylinder probe test had the lowest coefficient of correlation ($R^2=0.7247$) because it may be ineffective in causing direct deformation of individual rice grains. Furthermore, when the hardness values (N) were converted to stress (Pa), highly linear correlations ($R^2{\approx}0.99$) were observed between the tests with similar probe geometry and force application.

  • Plant root penetration through soil profile is restricted by compacted layer such as plow pan under conventional tillage. For detecting the compact layer, we made a graduated T-shape probe and measured compared between the depths with rapid change in feeling hardness of hand penetration using T-shape probe and with a rapid increase of penetrometer cone index. On upland crops, including red pepper, corn, soybean and cucumber, plow pan depth ranged from 10 cm to 25 cm depth. The effective rooting depth (ER) had significant correlation with the plow pan depth (PP) except soils with the shallow ground water and/or poorly drained soil. The regression equation was ER = 0.9*PP ($R^2=0.54^{**}$, N = 14) with the applicative PP range of 10-25 cm.

  • Ground stiffness(shear wave velocity) is one of the key parameters in geotechnical earthquake engineering. An In-situ seismic technique has its own advantages and disadvantages over the others in stiffness measurements. By combining the crosshole and seismic cone techniques and utilizing favourable features of bender elements, a new hybrid probe has been developed in order to enhance data quality and easiness of testing. The basic structure of the probe, called "MudFork", is a fork composed of two blades, on each of which source and receiver bender elements were mounted respectively. To evaluate the disturbance caused by the penetration of the probe, shear wave velocity measurements were carried out in the Kaolinite slurry in the laboratory. Finally, the probe was penetrated in coastal mud near Incheon, Korea, using SPT(standard penetration test)rods pushed with a routine boring machine and shear wave velocity measurements were carried out. The results were verified with data from laboratory and cone testing. The performance of the probe turns out to be excellent in terms of data quality and testing convenience.

  • A triple hot-wire probe has an essential potentiality for the measure- ment of an instantaneous velocity vector in a three dimensional unsteady flow with large amplitude of velocity fluctuations, the key problems asso- ciated with this instrument are the directional range of applicability and the accuracy. This present paper is concerned with a new method of the techniques of calibration and data processing to estimate the three dimensional flow field using an arbitrary shaped triple hot-wire probe. The method is not based on the assumptions of orthogonality or symmetry and it is especially useful for applications to a hand-made probe where probe geometry is not accurately known. The test application is made to evaluate the effect of cone angles of symmetric non-orthogonal probe.

  • The practical use of the electrical resistivity, which can makes the acquirement of the high resolution data in specific area, is increased in order to obtain a reasonable data for a ground investigation. The objective of this study is development of TRPF(Temperature-compensated Resistivity Probe for Field test), and an application in the field test for obtaining a reliable electrical resistivity value about considering the temperature effects. Temperature sensor is attached at 15mm, 30mm, 90mm below from the cone tip in consideration with the results of temperature transient process of cone probe and safety, and the angle of cone tip is $60^{\circ}$ for geometrical reason and minimizing the disturbance during the penetration test. Diameter of the cone probe is equally 35.7mm and penetration rate is 2 cm/sec for a comparison with standard cones such as CPT and SPT, and others. The temperature change is instantly observed around $4^{\circ}C$ when touching the ground, and the comparing results among the other cones indicates that the temperature compensation should be conducted in the ground survey using the electrical resistivity. This study shows that the necessity of temperature effects compensation during penetration test through the development and field verification of TRPF (Temperature-compensated Resistivity Probe for Field test).
