Comparison of 3-D structures of Halo CMEs using cone models

  • Halo coronal mass ejections (HCMEs) are major cause of geomagnetic storms and their three dimensional structures are important for space weather. In this study, we compare three cone models: an elliptical cone model, an ice-cream cone model, and an asymmetric cone model. These models allow us to determine the three dimensional parameters of HCMEs such as radial speed, angular width, and the angle (${\gamma}$) between sky plane and cone axis. We compare these parameters obtained from three models using 62 well-observed HCMEs from 2001 to 2002. Then we obtain the root mean square error (RMS error) between maximum measured projection speeds and their calculated projection speeds from the cone models. As a result, we find that the radial speeds obtained from the models are well correlated with one another (R > 0.84). The correlation coefficients between angular widths are less than 0.53 and those between ${\gamma}$ values are less than 0.47, which are much smaller than expected. The reason may be due to different assumptions and methods. The RMS errors of the elliptical cone model, the ice-cream cone model, and the asymmetric cone model are 213 km/s, 254 km/s, and 267 km/s, respectively. Finally, we discuss their strengths and weaknesses in terms of space weather application.

Comparison of the WSA-ENLIL CME propagation model with three cone types and an empirical model

  • We have made a comparison of the WSA-ENLIL CME propagation model with three cone types and an empirical model using 29 halo CMEs from 2001 to 2002. These halo CMEs have cone model parameters from Michalek et al. (2007) as well as their associated interplanetary (IP) shocks. For this study we consider three different cone models (an asymmetric cone model, an ice-cream cone model and an elliptical cone model) to determine CME cone parameters (radial velocity, angular width and source location), which are used for input parameters of the WSA-ENLIL CME propagation model. The mean absolute error (MAE) of the arrival times at the Earth for the elliptical cone model is 10 hours, which is about 2 hours smaller than those of the other models. However, this value is still larger than that (8.7 hours) of an empirical model by Kim et al. (2007). We are investigating several possibilities on relatively large errors of the WSA-ENLIL cone model, which may be caused by CME-CME interaction, background solar wind speed, and/or CME density enhancement.

  • Consider a strong Markov process $X^0$ that has continuous sample paths in the closed cone $\bar{G}$ in $R^d(d \geq 3)$ such that the process behaves like a ordinary Brownian motion in the interior of the cone, reflects instantaneously from the boundary of the cone and is absorbed at the vertex of the cone. It is shown that $X^0(t)$ has a representation $R(t) \ominus (t)$ where $R(t) \in [0, \infty)$ and $\ominus(t) \in S^{d-1}$, the surface of the unit ball.

  • In this paper, we introduce double controlled cone metric spaces via two control functions. An example of a double controlled cone metric space by two incomparable functions, which is not a controlled metric space, is given. We also provide some fixed point results involving Banach type and Kannan type contractions in the setting of double controlled cone metric spaces.

정밀 경운을 위한 원추지수 지도 작성 (Mapping of Cone Index for Precision Tillage)

  • Precision tillage is designed to till lands variably according to their firmness. Therefore, it is necessary to measure soil firmness in fields and present it in a form with which the variable tillage on be performed. Such forms may be classified into two categories: sensor-based and map-based forms. The map-based approach appears to be inevitable until the technology develops high enough to secure the sensor-based approaches. The first step for map-based precision tillage may be to develop a tillage recommendation map. In this study, a tractor-mountable automatic soil firmness measurement system was developed to construct a cone index map. The system is comprised of three ASAE Standard cone penetrometers and a hydraulic unit for controlling operation of the penetrometers. The system is designed to conduct stop-and-go measurements in fields. The measurements from the three penetrometers are transferred to a microcomputer and the average cone index was calculated. This average cone index was taken as soil firmness of the location where the measurement was made. The cone indices thus determined were used to construct a cone index map using the ArcView software. The system also displays the soil penetration resistance, cone index and soil depth as the cone penetrates into the soil. The field performance of the system was evaluated and the cone index maps at different depths were also presented.

우도(牛島) 분화구(噴火口)에서의 일윤회(一輪廻) 화산과정(火山過程) (One-cyclic Volcanic Processes at Udo Crater, Korea)

  • Udo Island, some 3 km off the coast of Sungsan Peninsula at the eastern promontory of Cheju Island, occurs in such a regular pattern on the sequences which reprent an excellent example of an eruptive cycle. The island comprises a horseshoe-shaped tuff cone, a nested cinder cone on the crater floor, and a lava delta which extends over northwest from the moat between two cones. The volcanic sequences suggest volcanic processes that start with emergent Surtseyan eruption, progress through Strombolian eruption and end with lava effusion followed by reworking of smooth tephra on the tuff cone. Eruptive environment and hydrology of vent area in the Udo tuff cone are poorly constrained because the stratigraphic units under the tuff cone are unknown. It is thoughl, however, that the tuff cone could be mainly emergent because the present cone deposits show no evidence of marine reworking, and standing body of sea water could play a great role. The emergent volcano is characterized by distinctive steam-explosivity that results primarily from a bulk interaction between rapidly ascending magma and a highly mobile slurry. The sea water gets into the vent by flooding accross or through the top or breach of tephra cone. Udo tuff cone was constructed from Surtseyan eruption which went into with tephra finger jetting activities in the early stage, late interspersed with continuous uprush activities and proceeded to only continuous uprush activities in the last. When the enclosure of the vent by a long-lived tephra barrier would prevent the flooding and thus allow the vent to dry out, the Surtseyan eruption ceased to transmit into Strombolian activities, which constructed a cinder cone on the crater floor of the tuff cone. The Strombolian eruption ceased when magma in the conduit gradually became depleted in gas. In the case of Udo, the last magmatic activity was Hawaiian-type (and/or fountain) which accumulated basalt lava delta. And then the loose tephra of the tuff cone reworked over the moat lava and the northeastern flank.

소형콘관입시험(Miniature Cone Penetration Test)의 국내현장 적용 (The Field Application of Miniature Cone Penetration Test System in Korea)

  • The cone penetration test(CPT) has gained its popularity in site characterization indebted by its reliability, speed, economy, and automatic measurement system since its development in the 1930s. The CPT results, commonly consisting of cone tip resistance, sleeve friction, and pore water pressure measurements, allow us to classify soils as well as to reveal their engineering characteristics. The site condition at which the CPT is allowable is often dependent on the capacity of a CPT system. In Korea, it has been considered that the CPT could be appled only to soft soils in most cases because CPT systems available for stiff soils are very rare due to their expensive procurement and maintenance cost. Luoisiana Transportation Research Center(LTRC) has developed and implemented a field-rugged continuous intrusion miniature cone penetration test(CIMCPT) system since the late 1990s. The miniature cone penetrometer has a sectional cone area of $2cm^2$ allowing system capacity reduction compared to the standard $10cm^2$ cone penetrometer. The continuous intrusion mechanism allows fast and economic site investigation. Samsung Engineering & Construction has recently developed and implemented a similar CIMCPT system based on its original version developed in LTRC. The performance of the Samsung CIMCPT system has been investigated by calibration with the standard CPT system at a well-characterized test site in Pusan, Korea. In addition, scale effect between the miniature cone penetrometer and the standard cone penetrometer has been investigated by comparing the field test results using the both systems.

원심모형실험용 소형 콘 개발 및 콘 선단저항치 특성에 관한 연구 (Development of Miniature Cone and Characteristics of Cone Tip Resistance in Centrifuge Model Tests)

  • 현장지반의 공학적 특성을 파악하기 위한 콘 관입시험(Cone Penetration Test; CPT)은 원지반의 연속적인 강도 특성을 분석하여 다양한 지반변수를 손쉽게 획득할 수 있다는 점에서 널리 활용되고 있으며, 원심모형실험에서도 널리 활용되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 원심모형실험에서 콘선단저항치를 계측할 수 있는 직경이 10 mm인 소형 콘을 개발하고 원심모형실험에서의 적용성을 평가하였다. 개발된 콘으로 4자유도 로봇을 활용하여 원심모형 가속 상태에서 콘 관입시험을 수행하였다. 이 때, 원심가속도 수준을 4회 변화시켜 다양한 유효응력상태에서 콘 관입시험을 실험을 수행하였다. 그 결과, 얕은 관입깊이의 동일한 유효응력에서 콘 선단저항치는 g-level에 영향을 받으며, 선단저항치가 임계 깊이 도달하는 깊이는 g-level과 상대밀도가 커질수록 깊어짐을 확인하였다. 또한, 각 실험에서 임계 깊이에 도달한 선단저항치와 실내실험에서 획득한 지반물성을 이용하여 기존 경험식과 비교하였다.

Comparison to Cone Models for Halo Coronal Mass Ejections

  • Halo coronal mass ejections (HCMEs) are mainly responsible for the most severe geomagnetic storms. To minimize the projection effect of the HCMEs observed by coronagraphs, several cone models have been suggested. These models allow us to determine the geometrical and kinematic parameters of HCMEs : radial speed, source location, angular width, and the angle between the central axis of the cone and the plane of the sky. In this study, we compare these parameters form two representative cone models (the ice-cream cone model and the asymmetric cone model) using well-observed HCMEs from 2001 to 2002. And we obtain the root mean square error (rms error) between observed projection speeds and calculated projection speeds for both cone models. It is found that the average rms speed error (89 km/s) of the asymmetric cone model is a little smaller than that (107 km/s) of the ice-cream cone models, implying that the radial speeds from both models are reasonably estimated. We also find that the radial speeds obtained from two models are similar to each other with the correlation coefficient of about 0.8.

무인 착저식 해양 콘관입시험기 개발 (Development of Unmanned Seabed type Marine Cone Penetration Testing System)

  • In the design and construction of the coastal/offshore structures, it is very important to evaluate the geotechnical characteristics of marine soils, which support the structures. Although the offshore site investigation is much more difficult than onshore, safe and precise jobs have not been accomplished in Korea because of the insufficiency of the test equipments especially for the site with deep water depth. The main objective of this study is to develop a new type of marine cone penetration testing(CPT) system, which can be utilized to even deep sea and high depth of soil layer. The system is one of seabed types and employs the conventional cone, which shows more reliable results than miniature cone. The most important parts of the marine CPT including continuous rod system, cone penetration system with wheel drive, automatic cone rod assembly/dissembly system etc., were designed and manufactured. Some tests to verify the developed marine CPT system were performed at both onshore and offshore sites as well as mechanical test in laboratory. The test results show the consistent and promising performance of the new equipment, and thereafter the system would be applicable to various sites with practical/economical advantages.
