  • Even though underground conduits have became important city-infra structures which should be exhaustively and efficiently managed, there is few systems which supports the well-defined facility management standards. Due to the lack of the supporting systems, experts must visit underground conduits scattered several cities over the country to see and check the status of the underground conduits including built-in facilities. This type of management gives us a little bit delayed status information at the end of so much time and money costs. In this paper, to solve this problem and manage the conduit synthetically, we developed a web-based facility management system for underground conduits by using information technologies. The developed management system has a simplified map drawing interface to depict the overall architectures and locations of underground conduits and their built-in facilities into sketch maps. And, the system uses the 3D panorama image technology with zooming functions in addition to still images and video images to give the feeling of a spot inspection. Moreover, since the system accumulates the data of repair/reinforcement, occasional inspections and safety diagnosis, conduit managers can synthetically and effectively manage the facilities within underground conduits and themselves.

  • We have carried out granulometry and component analysis on pyroclastic deposits of the Maljandeung Tuff, Ulleung Island, to interpret the eruption types and prime dynamic mechanisms. It is divided into three members in the extracaldera area, each of which comprises the lithofacies of coarse tuffs and lapillistones in the lower part, and pumice deposits in upper one. The lithofacies present quantitative evidences in the granularity and component distribution patterns. As compared to the pumice deposits, the coarse tuffs and lapillistones exhibit a relative increase in both the lithic/juvenile and the crystal/juvenile ratios, and a preferential fragmentation of the juvenile fraction. The abundance of lithics and crystals in the tuffs and lapillistones can be attributed to preferential fragmentation of the aquifer-hosting rocks due to explosive evaporation of ground water, and indirect enrichment in lithics and crystals due to removal of juvenile fines from eruptive cloud. The above data exhibit that early phreatopmagmatic phase was followed by purely magmatic fragmentation phases. The coarse tuffs and lapillistones suggest phreatoplinian eruption derived from explosive interaction of magma with ground water near the conduit, while pumice deposits indicate magmatic eruption by magmatic explosion from juvenile gas pressure. In early stage, phreatoplinian eruption occurred from explosive magma/water interaction in connecting confining water with drawdown of the magma column in the conduit; Later it shifted to plinian eruption by explosive expansion of only magmatic volatiles in intercepting water influx due to higher magmatic gas pressure than confining water pressure with rising of the magma column in the conduit.

  • BACKGROUND: Adding pulsation to the Fontan circulation might change the fate of patients palliated by this procedure. Our aim was to compare the pulsatility index (PI) of the pulmonary artery (PA) between the various modifications of Fontan palliation. METHODS: Doppler-derived PI was measured in PA branches of a cohort of 28 patients palliated by 6 modifications of Fontan procedure. A group of normal individuals was included for comparison. RESULTS: Atriopulmonary connection (APC) group had the highest PA branches PI and statistically was close to the PI of the normal individuals (right pulmonary artery [RPA] PI of 1.58 vs. 1.63; p = 0.99 and left pulmonary artery [LPA] PI of 1.54 vs. 1.68; p = 0.46, respectively). The lowest PA branches PI was seen in the group of extracardiac total cavopulmonary connection (RPA PI of 0.62 and LPA PI of 0.65). Other 4 modifications including the extracardiac conduit with oversewn pulmonary valve, extracardiac conduit with preserved adjusted antegrade flow, extracardiac conduit from inferior vena cava onto the rudimentary right ventricle and lateral tunnel had a mean "RPA and LPA" PI of "1.19 and 1.17", "1.16 and 1.11", "1.13 and 1.11", "0.82 and 0.84", respectively. The modified Dunnett's post hoc test has shown a significant statistical decline in PI of all modifications compared to the normal individuals except for the APC group. CONCLUSIONS: Fontan palliated patients in different groups of surgical modification showed a spectrum of Doppler-derived PI with the highest amounts belong to the groups of pulsatile Fontan.

  • Recently, Flood hazard has been increased frequently in urban area by rainfall and Typhoon. To manage flood hazard effectively, it needs to construction of flood information management system. Especially, run-off by flood in urban area must be considered not only surface outflow by topographic gradient and elevation but also conduits outflow along conduit network. This paper suggests the flood hazard management system for analyzing flood outflow in urban area using conduits outflow simulation by ILLUDAS model and providing quickly flood hazard information using WebGIS and MobileGIS.

  • In Tokamak magnet for nuclear fusion, high current pulse type conductor is requested. Cable in Conduit type Conductor(CICC) is considered to be effective for this application because of not only high current but the high stability and mechanical strength. In this paper, the present status of conductor development for superconducting tokamak has been investigated.

  • Drainage concrete pavement, unlike water permeable concrete pavement, is to preclude the pavement from overflowing with water, such as rain water, from infiltrating into earth by placing a border in the middle layer which makes water to flow through the surface of the border to the conduit. Drainage concrete pavement enhances car wheel resistance to slippery and wet road surface and imbibes noise caused by friction on the road. Also, by using pigment, it adds to the beauty of the environment. Drainage concrete pavement can be used for sidewalks, roadways, parking lots and expressways.

  • The authors report a case of double aortic arch associated with complete transposition of the great arteries. On 7th, Feb. 1985, Rastelli operation was performed for transposition using extracardiac valved conduit. Postoperative course was complicated by persistent right lower lobe atelectasis which resulted from tracheal compression by double aortic arch. On 20th, Mar. 1985, left arch was divided distal to the left subclavian artery followed by complete resolution of the atelectasis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case ever reported in Korea.

  • We have recently operated 6 year-old male patient who had double outlet right ventricle with dextrocardia, situs inversus, pulmonary stenosis and 2 ventricular septal defects. Rastelli operation was performed by internal baffling with Cooley woven Dacron and tunnel grafting with Hancock valved conduit between the right ventricle and the main pulmonary artery. His postoperative course was uneventful. He was discharged in good conditions on P.O.D. #33.

  • Three component velocity measurements with a refractive index-matching technique was used to investigate the flow characteristics in the atrio-pulmomnary (AP) Fontan connection under the steady flow condition. A strong swirl was observed in the extra-cardiac conduit and the main pulmonary artery (MPA). Maximum velocity magnitude in the MPA was about 0.8 m/s near the posterior wall at 6 liter/min. Swirling motion of the flow as well as geometric abnormalities of the connection are important factors in energy loss across Fontan connections.
