  • Stable polyaniline-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid(PANI-DBSA) fully dissolved in toluene was obtained by a direct one-step emulsion polymerization technique. By using the proper molar ratio of APS/aniline monomer and DBSA/aniline monomer, the highest conductivity(7 S/cm) of PANI was obtained. The UV-Vis absorption spectrum of PANI confirmed PANI is emeraldine salt form. PANI/styrene polymers (polystyrene and styrene-butadiene copolymer) blends were prepared by mixing PANI solution with polymers in toluene. These blends exhibited the conductivity of 10$\^$-4/-10$\^$-3/ S/cm at 1 wt. % of PANI content. The mechanical property of conducting blend was decreased and TGA thermograms of conducting blends were similar to that of PANI. It had been checked that the flatness of coating layers of conducting blends decreased with increasing conducting components. It was also found that the morphology of blends was setting closer to that of PANI at higher conducting component contents.

  • The main idea behind the paper is to present two alternative methods of homogenization of the heat conduction problem in composite materials, where the heat conductivity coefficients are assumed to be random variables. These two methods are the Monte-Carlo simulation (MCS) technique and the second order perturbation second probabilistic moment method, with its computational implementation known as the Stochastic Finite Element Method (SFEM). From the mathematical point of view, the deterministic homogenization method, being extended to probabilistic spaces, is based on the effective modules approach. Numerical results obtained in the paper allow to compare MCS against the SFEM and, on the other hand, to verify the sensitivity of effective heat conductivity probabilistic moments to the reinforcement ratio. These computational studies are provided in the range of up to fourth order probabilistic moments of effective conductivity coefficient and compared with probabilistic characteristics of the Voigt-Reuss bounds.

  • In this work, we consider a problem in the context of thermoelectric materials with memory-dependent derivative for a half space which is assumed to have variable thermal conductivity depending on the temperature. The Lamé's modulii of the half space material is taken as a function of the vertical distance from the surface of the medium. The surface is traction free and subjected to a time dependent thermal shock. The problem was solved by using the Laplace transform method together with the perturbation technique. The obtained results are discussed and compared with the solution when Lamé's modulii are constants. Numerical results are computed and represented graphically for the temperature, displacement and stress distributions. Affectability investigation is performed to explore the thermal impacts of a kernel function and a time-delay parameter that are characteristic of memory dependent derivative heat transfer in the behavior of tissue temperature. The correlations are made with the results obtained in the case of the absence of memory-dependent derivative parameters.

  • NDT(Non-Destructive Testing Evaluation) using electromagnetic(EM) properties can be used for evaluation of physical performance in cement-based materials. In this study, a technique for strength evaluation in cement mortar is proposed through the measured EM properties(conductivity and dielectric constant). For this research, cement mortar specimens with 5 W/C ratios are made for evaluation of compressive strength and they are also utilized for tests of EM properties in the range of $0.2{\sim}20GHz$ frequency considering exposure condition and curing period. The averaged conductivity and dielectric constant in $5{\sim}20GHz$ frequency are reduced to $83{\sim}93%$ and $81{\sim}87%$, respectively with increasing water to cement ratios. Through the linear regression analysis, relationships between EM properties and results from the compressive strength are obtained, which shows higher correlated factor($0.93{\sim}0.94$) in the specimens exposed to room condition. The gradients in dielectric constant for strength results is measured to be higher than those in conductivity by $3.9{\sim}5.1$ times. The results from dielectric constant in room condition shows the most efficient relation for evaluation of strength.

  • The physical model considered here is a horizontal layer of fluid heated below and cold above with a conducting body placed at the center of the layer. The body has dimensionless thermal conductivities to the fluid of 0.1, 1 and 50. Two-dimensional solution for unsteady natural convection is obtained using an accurate and efficient Chebyshev spectral methodology for different Rayleigh numbers. Multi-domain technique is used to handle a square-shaped conducting body. The results for the case of a conducting body are also compared to those of adiabatic and neutral isothermal bodies. When the dimensionless thermal conductivity is 0.1, a pattern of fluid flow and isotherms and the corresponding time-averaged surface Nusselt number are almost the same as the case of an adiabatic body. When the dimensionless thermal conductivity is 50, a pattern of flow and isotherm and the corresponding surface and time-averaged Nusselt number are similar to those of neutral body. The results for the case of dimensionless thermal conductivity of unity are also compared to those of pure natural convection.

  • Conducting polyaniline-poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) polymer composites were synthesized via in situ deposition techniques. By dissolving different weight percentages of poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (PCL) (10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%), the oxidative polymerization of aniline was achieved using ammonium persulfate as an oxidant. FTIR, UV-vis spectra, and X-ray diffraction studies support a strong interaction between polyaniline (PANI) and PCL. Structural morphology of the PANI-PCL polymer composites was studied using scanned electron microscopy (SEM) and transmittance electron microscopy (TEM), and thermal stability was analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) technique. The temperature-dependent DC conductivity of PANI-PCL polymer composite films was studied in the range of 305-475 K, which revealed a semiconducting behavior in the transport properties of the polymer films. Conductivity increased with the increase of PCL in below critical level, however conductivity of the polymer film was decreased with increase of PCL concentration higher than the critical value.

  • In order to improve the mechanical properties of tungsten at room and elevated temperature, hafnium carbide (HfC) reinforced tungsten matrix composites were prepared using the spark plasma sintering technique. The effect of HfC content on the compressive strength and flexural strength of the tungsten composites was investigated. Mechanical properties of the composites were also measured at elevated temperatures and their trends, with varying reinforcement volume fraction, were studied. The effect of reinforcement fraction on the thermal properties of the composites was investigated. The thermal conductivity and diffusivity of the composites decreased with increasing temperature and reinforcement volume fraction. An inherently low thermal conductivity of the reinforcement as well as interfacial losses was responsible for lower values of thermal conductivity of the composites. Values of coefficient of thermal expansion of the composites were observed to increase with HfC volume fraction.

  • Conductive honeycomb-patterned polystyrene (PS) thin films were prepared by the formation of a polyaniline (PANI) thin layer on the surface of the patterned PS thin films using simple one-step chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline. The in situ chemical oxidation polymerization of aniline hydrochloride solution on the patterned structure of the PS films was conducted in the presence of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) to prepare the PANI-MWCNT/PS composite film. The concentration (wt %) of MWCNT was varied in the range of 1%-3% by weight. The dependence of surface morphology of the PANI/PS and PANI-MWCNT/PS composite film to the polymerization time was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The room temperature DC conductivity was obtained by the four-probe technique. The conductivity of the PANI-MWCNT/PS composite film was affected both by the MWCNT concentration and polymerization time. In addition, DC electrical field was loaded during the oxidative polymerization to affect the distribution of the MWCNT included in the composite film, varying the loading voltage in the range of 0.1-3.0 V. The conductivity of the PANI-MWCNT/PS composite film was increased as loading voltage rose. However, this increase stops at a voltage higher than the critical value.

  • In this study, we proposed to synthesize thermally stable, soluble and conjugated Schiff base polymer (SbP). For this reason, a specific molecule namely 4,4'-thiodiphenol which has sulfur and oxygen bridge in its structure was used to synthesize bi-functional monomers. Bi-functional amino and carbonyl monomers namely 4,4'-[thio-bis(4,1-phenyleneoxy)] dianiline (DIA) and 4,4'-[thiobis(4,1-phenyleneoxy)]dibenzaldehyde (DIB) were prepared from the elimination reaction of 4,4'-thiodiphenol with 4-iodonitrobenzene and 4-iodobenzaldehyde, respectively. The structures of products were confirmed by elemental analysis, FTIR, $^1H$ NMR and $^{13}C$ NMR techniques. The molecular weight distribution parameters of SbP were determined by size exclusion chromatography (SEC). The synthesized SbP was characterized by solubility tests, TG-DTA and DSC. Also, conductivity values of SbP and SbP-iodine complex were determined from their solid conductivity measurements. The conductivity measurements of doped and undoped SbP were carried out by Keithley 2400 electrometer at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, which were calculated via four-point probe technique. When iodine was used as a doping agent, the conductivity of SbP was observed to be increased. Optical band gap ($E_g$) of SbP was also calculated by using UV-Vis spectroscopy. It should be stressed that SbP was a semiconductor which had a potential in electronic and optoelectronic applications, with fairly low band gap. SbP was found to be thermally stable up to $300^{\circ}C$. The char of SbP was observed 29.86% at $1000^{\circ}C$.

  • Fluid conductivity logging has been applied in the boreholes to identify the permeable fi:actures and estimate the origin of saline groundwater in coast area. Fluid replacement technique measures the fluid electrical conductivity with depth at different times in a well after the borehole is first washed out with different water by passing a tube to the borehole bottom. Then formation water flows into the borehole through aquifer such as permeable fractures or porous formation during ambient or pumping condition. Measured conductivity profiles with times therefore indicate the locations of permeable zone or fractures within the open hole or the fully slotted casing hole. As a result of fluid conductivity logging for three boreholes in the study area, it is interpreted that saline groundwater is caused by seawater intrusion through fractured rock, although the effect by land reclamation partially remains. We are planning the quantitative analysis to estimate the hydraulic characteristics using fluid replacement technique, and this approach might be usefully utilized for assessing the characteristics of seawater intrusion, the design of optimal pumping, and estimating the hydraulic properties in coastal aquifer.
