  • Knowledge of ground thermal properties is most important for the proper design of BHE(borehole heat exchanger) systems. The configure type, pipe size and thermal performance of the BHE is highly dependent on the ground source heatpump system-efficiency and instruction cost. Thermal response tests with mobile measurement devices were developed primarily for in-situ determination of design data for Standing Column Well apply. The main purpose has been to determine in-situ values of effective ground thermal conductivity and thermal resistance, including the effect of ground-water flow and natural convection in the boreholes. The test rig is set up on a some trailer, and contains a sub-circulation pump, a boiler, temperature sensors, flow meter and a data logger for recording the temperature and circulation fluid flow data. A constant heating power is injected into the SCW through the test rig and the resulting temperature change in the SCW is recorded. The recorded temperature data are analysed with a line-source model, which gives the effective in-situ values of rock thermal conductivity and thermal resistance of SCW.

  • This paper presents how to analyze heat transfer characteristics of double-layered soils. Thermal response tests were conducted to measure the ground thermal conductivities of Joomunjin sand and double layered soils filled in a steel box of which the size is $5m{\times}1m{\times}1m$. Double-layered soils were composed of Joomunjin sand and Kaoline clay. Each thermal conductivity of Joomunjin sand and Kaloine clay was measured by using Heat Flow Meter considering different void ratio. The ground thermal conductivity of double-layered soils was 15% smaller than that of Joomunjin sand.

  • From measured thermal conductivity and modeling by simulation, this study suggests that U-factors are highly related to materials used between steel and polymer. The objective and prospective point of this study are to relate the relationship between the U-factor and the thermal conductivity of the materials used. For the characterization, EDX, SEM, a thermal conductive meter, and computer simulation utility are used to analyze the elemental, surface structural properties, and U-factor with a simulation of the used material between steel and polymer. This study set out to divide the curtain wall system that makes up the envelope into an aluminum frame section and entrance frame section and interpret their thermal performance with U-factors. Based on the U-factor thermal analysis results, the target curtain wall system is divided into fix and vent types. The glass is 24 mm double glazing (6 mm common glass +12 mm Argon +6 mm Low E). The same U-factor of 1.45 W/m2·K is applied. The interpretation results show that the U-factor and total U-value of the aluminum frame section are 1.449 and 2.343 W/m2·K, respectively. Meanwhile, those of the entrance frame section are 1.449 and 2.

  • Efforts have been made in this paper to develop the measuring device for the insulation performance of full scale NO96 LNG CCS. The facility was designed to maintain environmental conditions which are similar to operation conditions of full scale LNG CCS. In the facility, the heat sink boundary was kept cryogenic temperature by cold chamber which contains liquefied nitrogen and heat source boundary was made by external case heated by natural convection. Heat Flow Meter method (HFM) was applied to this facility, hence Heat Flux Sensors (HFS) were attached to specimen. The equivalent thermal conductivity of full scale NO96 unit box was targeted to measure and PUF of same size was used for the calibration test. Additionally, the finite element analysis was carried out to check the performance of the developed test facility and experimental results were also compared with those predicted by the numerical method.

  • Novel characterization of thermal properties of a battery has been introduced by defining its frequency-dependent thermal impedance function. Thermal impedance function can be approximated as a thermal impedance spectrum by analyzing experimental temperature transient which is related to the thermal impedance function through Laplace transformation. In order to obtain temperature transient, a process has been devised to generate external heat pulse with heating wire and to measure the response of battery. This process is used to study several commercial Li-ion batteries of cylindrical type. The thermal impedance measurements have been performed using potentionstat/galvanostate controlled digital signal processor, which is more commonly available than flow-meter usually applied for thermal property measurements. Thermal impedance spectra obtained for batteries produced by different manufactures are found to differ considerably. Comparison of spectra at different states of charge indicates independence of thermal impedance on charging state of battery. It is shown that thermal impedance spectrum can be used to obtain simultaneously thermal capacity and thermal conductivity of battery by non-linear complex least-square fit of the spectrum to thermal impedance model. Obtained data is used to simulate a response of the battery to internal heating during discharge. It is found that temperature inside the battery is by one-third larger that on its surface. This observation has to be considered to prevent damage by overheating.

  • Electrical resistivity is an important physical property of portland cement concrete which is directly related to chloride induced corrosion process. This study examined the electrical surface resistivity (SR) and bulk electrical resistivity (BR) of concrete cylinders for various binary and ternary based high-performance concrete (HPC) mixtures from 7 to 161 days. Two different types of instruments were utilized for this investigation and they were 4 point Wenner probe meter for SR and Merlin conductivity tester for bulk resistivity measurements. Chronological development of electrical resistivity as well as correlation between two types of resistivity on several days was established for all concrete mixtures. The ratio of experimental surface resistance to bulk resistance and corresponding resistivity was computed and compared with theoretical values. Results depicted that bulk and SR are well correlated for different groups of HPC mixtures and these mixtures have attained higher range of electrical resistivity for both types of measurements. In addition, this study presents distribution of surface and bulk resistivity in different permeability classes as proposed by Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) specification from 7 to 161 days. Furthermore, electrical resistivity data for several HPC mixtures and testing procedure provide multiple promising options for long lasting bridge decks against chloride induced corrosion due to its ease of implementation, repeatability, non-destructive nature, and low cost.

  • The carbon laden suspensions in water with no surfactants have poor stability caused by the hydrophobic layer of particles. In this study, the water-based carbon nano colloide(CNC) was successfully produced using electro-chemical one-step method without agent. The properties of CNC were characterized by using various techniques such as particle size analyzer, TEM, FT-IR, turbidity meter, viscometer, and transient hot-wire method. The average size of the suspended in the CNC was 15 nm in diameter. The thermal conductivity of CNC compared with water was increased up to 14% with 4.2wt% concentration. The CNC was stable over 600hr. The enhanced colloidal stability of CNC may be caused by the chemical structures, such as, hydroxide and carboxyl groups formed in outer atomic layer of carbon, which (i) made the carbon nanofparticles hydrophilic and (ii) prevented the aggregation among nanoparticles.

  • Due to its high conductivity, pyrylium has been frequently used in electron transfer reactions or in the synthesis of various organic materials. It has also been used as a sensor material. Traditionally, the compounds have been synthesized using various methods; mostly in a multiple steps. In this study, two pyrylium salts, 2, 6-di-(4'-methylphenyl) pyrylium fluoroborate and perchlorate were synthesized. The synthesis of these products was confirmed by 1H-NMR, LC/TOF-MS and FT-IR analyses while their photo-properties were analyzed using UV/VIS spectrophotometry. In addition, the electron transfer capacities of the salts were analyzed with a conductivity meter, it was found that their electron conductivities were high. When the synthesized compounds were dissolved in acetone, a green fluorescent material was observed to form. The fluorescent material can be used as a sensitizer in the electrical industry.

  • In the present study we investigated the relationship between the morphology and mechanical properties of electrospun polysulfone (PSF)/polyurethane (PU) blend nonwovens, by using the electrospinning process to prepare three types of electrospun nonwovens: PSF, PU and PSF/PU blends. The viscosity, conductivity and surface tension of the polymer solutions, were measured by rheometer, electrical conductivity meter and tensiometer, respectively. The electrospun PSF/PU blend nonwovens were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and with a universal testing machine. The SEM results revealed that the electrospun PSF nonwoven had a structure consisting of cross-bonding between fibers, whereas the electrospun PU nonwoven showed a typical, point-bonding structure. In the electrospun PSF/PU blend nonwovens, the exact nature of the point-bonding structure depended on the PU contents. The mechanical properties of the electrospun PSF/PU blend nonwoven were affected by the structure or the morphology. With increasing PU content, the mechanical behaviors, such as Young's modulus, yield stress, tensile strength and strain, of the electrospun PSF/PU blend nonwovens were by up to 80%.

  • Recently, innovative process has been investigated in order to replace the conventional high-cost micro patterning processes on the electronic products. To produce desirable profit margins from this low cost products, printed circuit board(PCB), will require dramatic changes in the current manufacturing philosophies and processes. Innovative process using metal nano particles replaces the current industry standard of subtractive etched of copper as a highly efficient way to produce robust circuitry on low cost substrates. An advantage of using metal nano particles process in patterned conductive line manufacturing is that the process is additive. Material is only deposited in desired locations, thereby reducing the amount of chemical and material waste. Simply, it just draws on the substrate as glass epoxy or polyimide with metal nano particles. Particles, when their size becomes nano-meter scale, show some specific characteristics such as enhanced reactivity of surface atoms, decrease in melting point, high electric conductivity compared with the bulk. Melting temperature of metal gets low, the metal nano particles could be formated onto polymer substrates and sintered under $300^{\circ}C$, which would be applied in PCB. It can be getting the metal line of excellent electric conductivity.
