  • Nano-sized Sn particles were coated with Ni-P layer using an electroless deposition method and their anodic performance was tested for lithium secondary batteries. Uniform coating layers were obtained, of which the thickness was controlled by varying the $Ni^{2+}$ concentration in the plating bath. It was found that the Ni-P layer plays two important roles in improving the anodic performance of Sn powder electrode. First, it prevents the inter-particle aggregation between Sn particles during the charge/discharge process. Second, it provides an electrical conduction pathway to the Sn particles, which allows an electrode fabrication without an addition of conductive carbon. A pseudo-optimized sample showed a good cyclability and high capacity ($>400mAh\;g^{-1}$) even without conductive carbon loading.

  • Biomimetic terpene sensors which have high sensitivity and stability have been fabricated using moleculary imprinted polymer (MIP) technology. Since it is impossible to make a resistive type sensor due to the high resistance of MIP, we improved the sensor by adding conductive polymers. We investigated the sensitivity of resistive type sensors with nano particles depending on the amount of conductive polymers. The MIP membrane contained the methacrylic acid as functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as cross linker, which formed specific cavities originated by the target terpene molecules. The mixture of MIP and the conductive polymer was coated on the patterns of interdigit electrodes on the alumina substrate. The fabricated sensors showed their highest specific sensitivities exposed to 500 ppm target gases : limonene 0.055 at 40% of amount of conductive polymers and geraniol $5.84{\times}10^{-4}$ at 20% of amount of conductive polymers. In conclusion, we found that the terpene sensors are affected by the target molecules, functional monomers and the conductive polymers.

  • Inkjet printing is one of the direct writing technologies and is able to form a pattern onto substrate by dispensing droplets in desired position. Also, by inkjet technology manufacturing time and production costs can be reduced, and procedures can be more efficient. To form a metal pattern, it must be harmonized with conductive nano ink, printing process, sintering, and surface treatment. In this study, micro patterning of conductive line has been investigated using the piezoelectric printhead driven by a bipolar voltage signal is used to dispense $20-40{\mu}m$ diameter droplets and silver nano ink which consists of 50 nm silver particles. In addition, hydrophobic treatment of surface, overlap printing techniques, and sintering conditions with changing temperature and times to achieve higher conductivity.

  • While in the process of electroless plating of dendrite-shape copper with silver, various silver-coated copper (Ag@Cu) particles were prepared by using both displacement plating and reducing electroless plating. The physicochemical properties of Ag@Cu particles were analyzed by scanning electron microscope- energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis (BET), and it was confirmed that the silver coated by the reducing electroless plating was formed as nano-particles on the copper surface. Ag@Cu particles were compounded with an epoxy resin to prepare a conductive film, and its thermal stability was evaluated. We investigated the effect of the difference between the displacement plating and reducing electroless plating on the initial resistance and thermal stability of conductive films.

  • Screen printable CNT pastes were formulated including conductive nano particles (CNPs) and their properties were investigated with an expectation of stable cold cathodes for advanced lamp application. CNT cathodes showed a turn-on field of 1~1.5V/um, a life time of ~100 hours at an emission current density of 10uA/$cm^2$ for DC-bias. Detailed analysis of measured I-V was carried out by applying Fowler-Nordheim model to trace down the origin of emission property degradation.

  • Cu/carbon nano-particle hybrids were fabricated through the cathodic electrophoretic deposition (EPD) process. CNT and CNF nano-particles were modified to give positive charges by polyethyleneimine (PEI) treatment before depositing them on the substrate. Since a Cu plate was used as an anode in the EPD process, Cu particles were also deposited along with the carbon nano-particles. Experimental observation showed the nano-hybrids constructed a novel formicary-like nano-structure which is strong and highly conductive. Utilizing the hybrids, carbon fiber composites were manufactured, and their electrical conductivity and interlaminar shear strength were measured. In addition, the deposition morphology and failure surface were examined by SEM observations. Results demonstrated that the electrical conductivities in the through-the-thickness direction and the interlaminar shear strength significantly increased by 350~2100% and 14%, respectively.

  • In aqueous phase, we directly prepared conducting and photoluminescent nano-structured particles by oxidation polymerization. Thiophene(PT) was initiated by $FeCl_{3}/H_{2}O_{2}$ (catalyst/oxidant) combination system. And, polydispersed core-shell poly(styrene/thiophene) and polyaniline(PANI)-coated multi core-shell polystyrene latex particles were successfully prepared by oxidative and radical polymerization. The resulting latex particles have fine improved luminescence and conductive efficiency and dispersion state due to the PT and PANI shell. Hyper functionalized nanoparticle would be expected to increase the processibility in various electrical and electro-optical fields.

  • In order to improve performances of submicrometer-sized Si negative electrode which shows larger volumetric change than nano-sized Si, composite binders are introduced by blending between poly(phenanthrenequinone) (PPQ) conductive polymer binder and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) having good adhesion strength due to its carboxyl functional group. Blending between PPQ and PAA shows an effect that the adhesion strength of the Si electrode with the composite conductive binder is greatly improved after blending and this makes its better stable cycle performance. Blending ratios between PPQ and PAA in this work are 2:1, 1:1, 1:2 (by weight) and the best capacity retention at 50th cycle is observed in the electrode with the blending ratio 2:1 (named QA21). This is because that PPQ plays a role of conductive carbon among the Si particles or between Si particles and Cu current collector and PAA binds effectively the particles and the current collector. According to this synergetic effect, the internal resistance of the Si electrode with the blending ratio 2:1 is the smallest value. In addition, the Si electrode with PPQ-PAA composite binder shows the better stable cycle performance than the electrode with conventional super-P conductive carbon (20 wt.%).

  • In this study, we demonstrate a nano-scale lithograph obtained on localized (100) silicon (p-type) surface using by modified AFM (Atomic force microscope) apparatuses and by adopting controlling methods. AFM-based experimental apparatuses are connected to a customized pulse generator that supplies electricity between the conductive tip and the silicon surface, while maintaining a constant humidity throughout the lithography process. The pulse durations are controlled according to various experimental conditions. The electrochemical reaction induced by the pulses occurs in the gap between the conductive tip and silicon surface and result in the formation of nanoscale oxide particles. Oxide particles with various heights and widths can be created by AFM surface modification; the size of the oxide particle depends on the pulse durations and the applied electrical conditions under a humid environment.

  • Nano-structured conducting polypyrroles were synthesized in the ionic liquids (ILs) based on 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium family with tetrachloroferrate as an anion ($C_n\;mim\;[FeCl_4]\;with\;n\;=\;4,\;8,\;and\;12$). The polypyrrole nanostructures synthesized in ILs were formed as spherical shapes. For ionic liquids with alkyl side chain length $C_4,\;C_4\;mim\;[FeCl_4]$, the size of particles was ranged around 60-nm with a relatively narrow size distribution. As the length of alkyl chain increases, the particle sizes become larger and their distributions become wider. The self-assembled local structures in the solvent ionic liquids are likely to serve as templates of highly organized nano-structured polymers. The length of the alkyl chain in ionic liquids seems to affect these local structures.
