  • This paper describes design, fabrication, and evaluation of the conduction cooled high temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet for superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES). The HTS magnet is composed of twenty-two of double pancake coils made of 4-ply conductors that stacked two Bi-2223 multi-filamentary tapes with the reinforced brass tape. Each double pancake coil consists of two solenoid coils with an inner diameter of 500 mm, an outer diameter of 691 mm, and a height of 10 mm. The aluminum plates of 3 mm thickness were arranged between double pancake coils for the cooling of the heat due to the power dissipation in the coil. The magnet was cooled down to 5.6 K with two stage Gifford McMahon (GM) cryocoolers. The maximum temperature at the HTS magnet in discharging mode rose as the charging current increased. 1 MJ of magnetic energy was successfully stored in the HTS magnet when the charging current reached 360A without quench. In this paper, thermal and electromagnetic behaviors on the conduction cooled HTS magnet for SMES are presented and these results will be utilized in the optimal design and the stability evaluation for conduction cooled HTS magnets.

  • Toward the practical applications, on operation of conduction-cooled HTS SMES at temperatures well below 77 K should be investigated, in order to take advantage of a greater critical current density of HTS and considerably reduce the size and weight of the system. Recently, research and development concerning application of the conduction-cooled HTS SMES that is easily movement are actively progressing in Korea. Electrical insulation under cryogenic temperature is a key and an important element in the application of this apparatus. Using multi wrapped copper by Polyimide film for HTS SMES, the breakdown characteristics of models for turn-to-turn, that is surface contact model, were investigated under ac and impulse voltage at 77 K. A material that is Polyimide film (Kapton) 0.025 mm thickness is used for multi wrapping of the electrode. Statistical analysis of the results using Weibull distribution to examine the wrapping number effects on breakdown voltage under at and impulse voltage in $LN_2$ was carried.

  • The electrical insulation design of 600 kJ conduction cooled high-Tc superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) have been studied in this paper. The high voltage is applied to both ends of magnet of high-Tc SMES by quench or energy discharge. Therefore. the insulation design of the high voltage needs for commercialization. stability. reliability and so on. In this study. we analyzed the insulation composition of a high-Tc SMES. and investigated about the insulation characteristics of the materials such as Kapton. AIN. $Al_2O_3$. GFRP and vacuum in cryogenic temperature. Base on these results. the insulation design for 600 kJ conduction cooled high-Tc SMES was performed.

  • Superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) has attracted a great deal of interest from the viewpoint of energy saving. The magnet of conduction-cooled high temperature superconducting (HTS) SMES is cooled down by a cryocooler. One of the most important problems to be assured the protection of magnet and cryocooler is breakdown at cryogenic temperature. In this study, we investigated insulation materials such as Kapton, Aluminum Nitride(AIN), Alumina($Al_2O_3$), glass fiber reinforced plastics(GFRP) and vacuum in cryogenic temperature. Also, we analyzed statistically the Weibull distribution of breakdown voltage.

  • The characteristics of the Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) system are faster response, longer life time, more economical, and environment friendly than other Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) using battery. Fast charge and discharge time of SMES system can provide powerful performance of improving power quality in the grid. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of SMES, the authors make a 10kJ SMES system for connection with RTDS (Real Time Digital Simulator). Because the characteristics of superconducting magnet are very important in SMES system, the necessary items such as thermal characteristic, mechanical stress and protection circuit should be considered. In this paper, the authors experimented thermal characteristics of the 10kJ SMES system. The experiment was accomplished using a simulation coils made of aluminium. It has same dimension of the 10kJ class HTS SMES coil. The coil was cooled with GM (Gifford -McMahon) cryocooler through the OFHC (Oxgen Free High thermal Conductivity) conduction bar. The test results of cool down and heat loads characteristics of the simulation coils are described in detail.
