In this paper, study and experiments are performed for finding recognition unit fit which can be used in large vocabulary recognition system. Specifically, a phoneme that is currently used as recognition unit and a syllable in which Korean is well characterized are selected. From comparisons of recognition experiments, the study is performed whether a syllable can be considered as recognition unit of Korean recognition system. For report of an objective result of the comparison experiment, we collected speech data of a male speaker and processed them by hand-segmentation for phoneme boundary and labeling to construct speech database. And for training and recognition based on HMM, we used HTK (HMM Tool Kit) 2.0 of commercial tool from Entropic Co. to experiment in same condition. We applied two HMM model topologies, 3 emitting state of 5 state and 6 emitting state of 8 state, in Continuous HMM on training of each recognition unit. We also used 3 sets of PBW (Phonetically Balanced Words) and 1 set of POW(Phonetically Optimized Words) for training and another 1 set of PBW for recognition, that is "Speaker Dependent Medium Vocabulary Size Recognition." Experiments result reports that recognition rate is 95.65% in phoneme unit, 94.41% in syllable unit and decoding time of recognition in syllable unit is faster by 25% than in phoneme.
Voice Recognition has recently been improved with AI(Artificial Intelligence) and has greatly improved the false recognition rate and provides an effective and efficient Human Machine Interface (HMI). This trend has also been applied in the defense industry, particularly in the aviation, F-35. However, for the quality evaluation of Voice Recognition, the defense industry, especially the aircraft, requires measurable quantitative models. In this paper, the quantitative evaluation model is proposed for applying Voice Recognition to aircraft. For the proposal, the evaluation items are identified from the Voice Recognition technology and ISO/IEC 25000(SQuaRE) quality attributes. Using these two perspectives, the quantitative evaluation model is proposed under aircraft operation condition and confirms the evaluation results.

The priming task was used in order to provide an experimental evidence on whether the processing unit of Korean syllable is antibody or not. Four types of experimental conditions were made: antibody overlap condition (e.g., sumjil -> sungjik), rime overlap condition (e.g.,: hungchik -> sungjik), onset and coda overlap condition (e.g.,: saengjeok -> sungjik), and no overlap condition (e.g.,: chanmeol -> sungjik). In addition, we manipulated the letter type by type and type in order to investigate on whether different degrees of priming are there for the priming task. The result showed that only type showed significant inhibitory effects. This implicates that certain Korean word would be represented and processed by the antibody unit, and further studies are needed to know the whole pattern of Korean word recognition.
In this study, we examined the effects of spatial attention in Hangul word recognition depending on visual factors. The visual complexity of words (Experiment 1) and contrast (Experiment 2) were manipulated to examine whether the effect of spatial attention differs depending on visual quality. Participants responded to words with and without codas in experiment 1 and words in high-contrast and low-contrast conditions in experiment 2. The effects of spatial attention were investigated by calculating the difference in performance between the condition where spatial cues were given at the target location (valid trial) and the condition where the spatial cues were not given at the target location (invalid trial) as the cuing effects. As a result, the cuing effects were similar depending on the complexity of the words. It indicates that the effects of spatial attention were not different across the visual complexity conditions. The cuing effects were greater in the low-contrast condition than in the high-contrast condition. The greater effect of spatial attention when the contrast is low was explained as a mechanism of signal enhancement.

The morphological analysis of wear debris can provide early a failure diagnosis in lubricated moving system. It can be effective to analyze operating conditions of oil-lubricated tribological system with shape characteristics of wear debris in a lubricant. But, in order to predict and recognize an operating condition of lubricated machine, it is needed to analyze and to identify shape characteristics of wear debris. Therefore, If the morphological characteristics of wear debris are recognized by computer image analysis using the neural network algorithm, it is possible to recognize operating condition of hydraulic driving members. In this study, wear debris in the lubricating oil are extracted by membrane filter (0.45$\mu\textrm{m}$), and the quantitative values of shape parameters of wear debris are calculated by the digital image processing. This shape parameters are studied and identified by the artificial neural network algorithm. The result of study could be applied to prediction and to recognition of the operating condition of hydraulic driving members in lubricated machine systems.
The summed-similarity model of visual short-term recognition proposes that the estimated amount of summed similarity between remembered items and a recognition probe determines recognition judgement decision (Kahan & Sekuler, 2002). This study examined the effect of a task-irrelevant location change on the recognition decision against two remembered Gabor gratings differing in their spatial frequencies. On each trial in Experiment, participants reported if two gratings displayed across the visual fields are the same or not as the probe grating displayed after about a second of memory delay. The probe grating would be the same as or different from the memory items (lure) by 1 or 4 JND units. The location of the probe would also vary randomly across the left and right visual field with respect to the location of the corresponding memory item. The participants were instructed to perform their recognition task exclusively to the spatial frequencies of the memory items and the probe while ignoring the potential location change of the probe. The results showed that false-recognition rates of the lure probe increased as the summed similarity between the memory items and the probe increased. The rates also further increased in the condition where the probe location was different from the location of the corresponding memory item compared to the condition where the probe location was the same. The increased false-recognition rates indicate that information stored into visual short-term memory is represented as a form of well-bound visual features rather than independent features.
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of self-regulated neurofeedback training on elementary school students' recall and recognition performance. For this purpose, the participants were randomly allocated to control condition where no training was provided or training condition where participants were trained in 4 self-regulated neurofeedback training sessions. As the dependent measures, correct free, recall rates and correct recognition rates were analyzed. The results showed that overall scores of recall and recognition were enhanced by the administration of the training itself, and as the training sessions advanced. In particular, the effect of the training seemed to induce more positive effect on the both memory tasks when the task difficulty (manipulated by increasing the number of target words) was increased. These results implied that self-regulated neurofeedback training can induce increased recollection ability for words by enhancing attentional process.
We investigated the importance and efficiency of active and passive exploration on the recognition of objects in a variety of virtual environments (VEs). In this study, 54 participants (19 males and 35 females) were randomly allocated into one of two navigation conditions (active and passive navigation). The 3D visual display was presented through HMD and participants used joysticks to navigate VEs. The VEs consisted of exploring four rooms (library, office, lounge, and conference room), each of which had 15 objects. 'Active navigation' was performed by allowing participants to self-pace and control their own navigation within a predetermined time limitation for each room. 'Passive navigation' was conducted by forced navigation of the four rooms in random order. Total navigation duration and objects for both navigations were identical. After navigating VEs, participants were asked to recognize the objects that had been in the four rooms. Recognition for objects was measured by response time and the percentage of correct, false, hit, and miss responses. Those in the active navigation condition had a significantly higher percentage of hit responses (t (52) = 4.000 p < 0.01), and a significantly lower percentage of miss responses (t (52) = -3.763, p < 0.01) in object recognition than those in the passive condition. These results suggest that active navigation plays an important role in spatial cognition as well as providing a better explanation about the efficiency of learning in a 3D-based program.
This paper proposes a new data-driven method for high-pass approaches, which suppresses slow-varying noise components. Conventional high-pass approaches are based on the idea of decorrelating the feature vector sequence, and are trying for adaptability to various conditions. The proposed method is based on temporal local decorrelation using the information-maximization theory for each utterance. This is performed on an utterance-by-utterance basis, which provides an adaptive channel normalization filter for each condition. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated by isolated-word recognition experiments with channel distortion. Experimental results show that the proposed method yields outstanding improvement for channel-distorted speech recognition.
