  • An experiment has been carried out to identify flow patterns in a horizontal condensing flow with R-113. Characteristics of flow patterns were determined based upon a statistical analysis of differential pressure fluctuations at an orifice. The probability density function and power spectral density function of instantaneous pressure drop curves for various flow conditions were obtained. In comparison to the results of air-water flows, the flow patterns in a condensing flow such as annular, wavy, slug and plug could be identified. The experimental data determined by this technique were compared with the flow pattern maps suggested by other investigators. The result indicates that the statistical characteristics of differential pressure fluctuations at an orifice may be a useful tool for identifying flow patterns both in condensing flows and in adiabatic two-phase flows.

  • Since the use of CFC and HCFC refrigerants are to be restricted due to the depletion of ozone layer, this experiment applies the NH$_3$ gas to study the performance characteristics from the superheat control for improving the energy efficiency. The experiments are carried out for the condensing pressure of refrigeration system from 14.5 bar to 16.0 bar by 0.5 bar and for superheat temperature from $0^{\circ}C$ to 1$0^{\circ}C$ by 1$^{\circ}C$ at each condensing pressure. As a result of experiment, when the superheat temperature is 1$^{\circ}C$ at each condensing pressure, the refrigeration system has the highest performance.

  • A computer simulation program of a high efficiency condensing heat exchanger is developed. The flue gas flows outside bare tube bundles both in strong cross flow and in weak counter flow and the cooling water inside the tubes. Condensing heat exchangers achieve high efficiency by reducing flue-gas temperatures to a level at which most of the water vapor in the flue gas is condensed and the latent heat associated with phase change of the water is recovered. The computer model has been verified by comparison with measured data. To verify the model, heat transfer coefficient was adjusted, along with the mass transfer diffusion coefficient and pressure drop coefficient, to achieve agreement between predicted and measured data. The efficiencies of heat exchanger increase 2.3 ~ 8.1% by condensations of 6.3 ~ 62.6% of the water vapor in the flue gas.

  • Nowadays CFCs and HCFCs refrigerants are restricted because it cause depletion of ozone layer. Accordingly, this experiment apply the $NH_3$ gas and not CFCs and HCFCs for refrigerant to study the performance characteristic from the superheat control and improve the energy efficiency from the high performance. The condensing pressure of refrigeration system is increased from 14.5bar to 16bar by 0.5bar and superheat temperature is increased from $0^{\circ}C$ to $10^{\circ}C$ by $1^{\circ}C$ at each condensing pressure. As the result of experiment, when the superheat temperature is $1^{\circ}C$ at each condensing pressure, the refrigeration system has the high performance.

  • This paper deals with the heat transfer characteristics of R-1270 (Propylene), R-600a (Iso-butane) and R-290 (Propane) as an environment friendly refrigerant and R-22 for condensing. The experimental apparatus has been set-up as a conventional vapor compression type heat pump system. The test section is a horizontal double pipe heat exchanger. A tube diameter of 12.70 mm with 1.32 mm wall thickness is used for this investigation. The test results showed that the local condensing heat transfer coefficients of hydrocarbon refrigerants were higher than that of R-22. The average condensing heat transfer coefficient was obtained with the maximum value in R-1270 and the minimum one in R-22. Comparing the heat transfer coefficient of experimental results with that of other correlations, the presented results had a good agreement with the Cavallini-Zecchin's correlation. It reveals that the natural refrigerants can be used as substitute for R-22.

  • A study on passive cooling systems for concrete containment of advanced pressurized water reactors has been performed. The proposed passive containment cooling system (PCCS) consist of (1) condenser units located inside containment, (2) a steam condensing pool outside containment at higher elevation, and (3) downcommer/riser piping systems which provide coolant flow paths. During an accident causing high containment pressure and temperature, the steam/air mixture in containment is condensed on the outer surface of condenser tubes transferring the heat to coolant flowing inside tubes. The coolant transfers the heat to the steam condensing pool via natural circulation due to density difference. This PCCS has the following characteristic: (1) applicable to concrete containment system, (2) no limitation in plant capacity expansion, (3) efficient steam condensing mechanism (dropwise or film condensation at the surface of condenser tube), and (4) utilization of a fully passive mechanism. A preliminary conceptual design work has been done based on steady-state assumptions to determine important design parameter including the elevation of components and required heat transfer area of the condenser tube. Assuming a decay power level of 2%, the required heat transfer area for 1,000MWe plant is assessed to be about 2,000 ㎡ (equivalent to 1,600 of 10 m-long, 4-cm-OD tubes) with the relative elevation difference of 38 m between the condenser and steam condensing pool and the riser diameter of 0.62 m.

  • Experimental results for heat transfer characteristic and pressure gradient of HCs refrigerants R-290, R-600a, R-1270 and HCFC refrigerant R-22 during condensing inside horizontal double pipe heat exchangers are presented. The test sections which have one tube diameter of 12.70 mm with 0.86 mm wall thickness, another tube diameter of 9.52 mm with 0.76 mm wall thickness are used for this investigation. The local condensing heat transfer coefficients of hydrocarbon refrigerants were higher than those of R-22. The average condensing heat transfer coefficient increased with the increase of the mass flux. It showed the higher values in hydrocarbon refrigerants than R-22. Hydrocarbon refrigerants have higher pressure drop than those of R-22 in 12.7 mm and 9.52 mm. This results from the investigation can be used in the design of heat transfer exchangers using hydrocarbons as the refrigerant for the air-conditioning systems.
