  • The characteristics of a condenser dryer and a vented dryer that are common types of domestic clothes dryers for home use are predicted and compared in an effort to improve the efficiency and to overcome economical and environmental problems due to its inefficient power consumption. In the present study, a drying system is simplified by assuming the mechanism is composed of several elements such as heater and drum and mathematical models using the mass and energy conservation of moisture and air through each element are defined. Based on this mathematical model, the computational tool is developed to predict temperature, humidity and enthalpy of moisture and air in a drum and remained moisture contents (RMC) in drying materials. The computational results are verified by comparing with experimental results from existing studies. In addition, the efficiency of a dryer is calculated using these predicted results for a given condition and the drying characteristics of a condenser dryer and a vented dryer are compared and analyzed.

  • Heat pump drying has a great potential for energy saving due to its high energy efficiency in comparison with conventional air drying. In the present study, the performance simulation for the basic design of a heat pump dryer has been carried out. The simulation includes one-stage heat pump cycle, simple drying process using the drying efficiency. As an example, the heat pump cycle with Refrigerant 134a has been investigated. For the operating conditions such as the average temperature of the condenser, the heat rate released in the condenser, the flow rate of drying air, and drying efficiency, the simulation has been carried out to figure out the performance of the dryer. The parameters considered in the design of the dryer are COP, MER, SMER, the rate of dehumidification, the temperature and humidity of drying air and those parameters are compared for different conditions after carrying out the simulation.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the performance of a heat recovery heat pump dryer using a R245fa refrigerant experimentally. In this study, the main components of the heat pump dryer were an evaporator, a compressor, a condenser, and an expansion valve. As a result, when the amount of refrigerant varied from 15 kg to 16 kg, the hot air outlet temperature in the condenser and the heat transfer rate were almost kept constant. Therefore, the amount of refrigerant at 16 kg was considered to be a suitable amount in the heat pump. As the air inlet velocity varied from 0.5 m/s to 1.5 m/s, the highest temperature in the condenser could be obtained when the air inlet velocity was 0.5 m/s. The heat transfer rate, system (COP), and hot air outlet temperature were 5.6 kW, 3.4, and $102.5^{\circ}C$, respectively, when the bypass ratio and water temperature were 0% and $60^{\circ}C$.

  • The important problems from the point of view of preventing global warming are to save the power consumption of automotive air-conditioning systems and reduce the refrigerant amount filled. To achieve such requirements, integral receiver/dryer (R/D) condensers were developed recently. Typical integral R/D condensers have extra headers that play the role of R/D. Except an extra header and somewhat complex tube array resulting from the extra header, the most integral R/D condensers have almost the same specification that tube has multi channels, fin has louvers, flow in tube is parallel, etc. When integral condensers are applied, it is known that the refrigerating effect increases, resulting from the increase of subcooling degree in condenser, and the refrigerant amount used saves. In spite of several merits, integral condensers have not been applied a lot. That is why there is an uncertainty in performance, using integral condensers. The objective of this study is to theoretically optimize the tube array in an integral R/D condenser that is really being applied to some vehicles. The tube array has a great effect on the performance of the integral condenser as well as common ones. Through computer simulation, we could see that the tube array, 14-6-3-5-3-4, in the same condenser was the best, comparing heat release rate, pressure drop, etc. to the real array, 17-5-3-3-2-5. It should be noted that the optimization is based on the condenser performance only.

  • Sub-cooled hybrid condenser(SCHC) which have been developed through this study is an appliance of integrating a condenser with a receiver dryer, which were previously separated. It is supposed that the development of sub-cooled hybrid condenser will be able to reduce not only weight, size, production process and cost, but also quite improve in capability, which will be of great use for the technological development and research of an air conditioning system whose importance is higher in a car. Through the present study it was found that the developed SCHC increases in the degree of sub-cooling by 10∼100% compared to conventional condenser. The excessive sub-cool has improved the cooling performance by 10%, and that leads to the reduction in evaporator outlet air temperature $1.5^{\circ}C$. Additionally, it is expected that sub-cooled hybrid condenser weights less by 100g than the previous condensers which has equal super heat.

  • An experimental study was performed to understand the heat transfer and fluid dynamic characteristics of Sub-Cooled Hybrid Condenser (SCHC), which conventional condenser and receiver dryer are integrated into. SCHC also employs a sub-cooled refrigerant passages at the end of the condenser in order to supply perfect liquid refrigerant to the expansion unit. Throughout the present study, it was found that the developed SCHC increases in the degree of sub-cooling by 10~100% compared to conventional condenser. The excessive sub-cooling has improved the cooling performance by 10%, and that leads reduction in evaporator outlet air temperature by $1.5^{\circ}C$. Also found through the study is that the refrigerant pressure drop across SCHC is fairly increased due to insertion of the desiccant cartridge in the receiver tank which is composed of zeolite, filter and supporter plate.

  • A heat pump dryer for the frozen food needs to preheat the air to a certain temperature where condensation can efficiently occur. In this study, an analysis of a heat pump dryer performance with operating conditions, an analysis of supplying heat with internal and external evaporators and a warm-up experiment with the evaporators have been performed. The results showed that the external evaporator can significantly accelerate the warm-up time of the dryer, so that it can reduce power consumption greatly. The use of the external evaporator is more efficient for higher ambient temperature. In addition, it was found that COP decreases and the range of evaporating pressure for the evaporator becomes narrower as the condensing temperature of the condenser increases.

  • An energy efficient drying system, utilizing a heat pump to recover the wasted heat with high efficiency is proposed. In conventional drying systems, over-heating occurs through a condenser as the same amount of air is provided into the evaportator and the condenser. In order to prevent the over-heating, part of the outlet air from the drying chamber must be bypassed to increase the rate of vaporization in the drying chamber without release of the heat from the system. Since a part of the heat in the condenser is used to heat the air during the drying process of the proposed system, a high drying efficiency and low SPC(Specific Power Consumption) could be obtained, Comparing the performances between the proposed heat pump and a conventional one, it was found that the drying efficiency of the proposed heat pump is higher than that of the conventional heat pump by an amount of 7-25%.

  • In this study, the performance characteristics of a high temperature heat pump dryer that is able to raise the air temperature up to $80^{\circ}C$ by using waste heat as heat source were investigated numerically. The main components of the heat pump dryer were modeling as a compressor, condenser, evaporator and expansion device, and R245fa was selected as refrigerant. Experiments were also conducted to validate the numerical data. As a result, when the evaporator air inlet temperature increased from $50^{\circ}C$ to $65^{\circ}C$, the numerical results of the hot air temperature at outlet and heat pump COP were about 8~11% and 5~8% higher than that of experimental ones, respectively.

Analyses of Power Consumption of the Heat Pump Dryer in the Automobile Drying Process by using the Principal Component Analysis and Multiple Regression (주성분 분석과 다중회귀모형을 사용한 자동차 건조 공정의 히트펌프 건조기 소모 전력 분석)

  • In this paper, we investigate how the power consumption of a heat pump dryer depends on various factors in the drying process by analyzing variables that affect the power consumption. Since there are in general many variables that affect the power consumption, for a feasible analysis, we utilize the principal component analysis to reduce the number of variables (or dimensionality) to two or three. We find that the first component is correlated positively to the entrance temperature of various devices such as compressor, expander, evaporator, and the second, negatively to condenser. We then model the power consumption as a multiple regression with two and/or three transformed variables of the selected principal components. We find that fitted value from the multiple regression explains 80~90% of the observed value of the power consumption. This results can be applied to a more elaborate control of the power consumption in the heat pump dryer.
