In this study, the heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of a condenser for a refrigerator are analyzed with the numerical method. The main objective of the study is to obtain basic data in order to develop a new type of condenser focused on an influence of thermal resistance of air side and thermal contact resistance on the heat transfer performance. The CFD technique was used for whole study, and experiments were performed in order to verify the reliability of the numerical analysis and predict the thermal contact resistance. In this study, a heat exchanger sample was made of a part of condenser to make the experimental and numerical analysis simple and efficient. Water was used for the inner working fluid of the heat exchanger, and an experimental apparatus was composed concisely. A heat exchanger sample of tube type was used to verify the reliability of numerical analysis, and a heat exchanger of fin and tube type was used to predict the ratio of thermal contact resistance to the overall thermal resistance.

The direct extrusion with porthole die can produce condenser tube which has the competitive power in costs and qualities compared with the existing conform extrusion. In general, porthole die extrusion has a great advantage in the forming that produces the hollow sections difficult to produce by conventional extrusion with a mandrel on the stem. Especially, condenser tube manufactured by porthole die belongs to sophisticated part and demands tighter dimension tolerance and higher surface finish than any other part. In order to confirm the general of porthole die extrusion, we perform the 3D FE analysis of hot porthole extrusion in non-steady state by using DEFORM 3D and investigate a pattern of elastic deformation for porthole die through the stress analysis using ANSYS 5.5 during extrusion process.
The present work presents condensation heat transfer and pressure drop data for the flow of R-12 in flat extruded aluminum tubes with small hydraulic diameters. The tube outside dimensions are $18mm(width){\times}1.7mm(height)$. Three types of internal geometry with the same outside dimensions are tested : sample 1 (7 tube holes), sample 2 (13 tube holes) and sample 3 (7 tube holes, micro-fin). The overall heat transfer coefficient is obtained for air-to-refrigerant heat transfer, and the Wilson plot method is used to determine the heat transfer coefficient for refrigerant flow. The sample 2 and sample 3 show significantly higher performance than sample 1. The heat transfer rates for the sample 2 and sample 3 are 9% and 12% higher, respectively, than sample 1. The friction factors for the sample 2 and sample 3 are 11.9% and 2.4% higher, respectively, than sample 1.
A numerical study was conducted to calculate the cooling capacity variation of a power plant ACC (air-cooled condenser) caused by changes in operating conditions. A numerical model was developed using the ${\varepsilon}-NTU$ and finite volume method, containing 100 elements for a single low fin tube. The model was validated through a comparison of cooling capacity between the simulated values and manufacturer's data. Even though simple assumptions and previously presented heat transfer correlations were applied to the model, the prediction error was 1.9%. The simulated variables of the operating conditions were air velocity, air temperature, and mass flux. The analysis on the variation of thermal resistance along the tube showed that the water side thermal resistance was higher than the air side thermal resistance at the downstream end of the tube, indicating that the ACC capacity could be increased by applying technology to enhance in-tube flow condensation heat transfer.
A computer program was developed for simulating performance(capacity, power consumption and etc.) of air-conditioners using compressor, fin-tube heat exchanger and capillary tube. The program consists of five modules, condenser, evaporator, compressor, capillary tube simulation modules and properties modules of refrigerant and moist air, The present program is focused on R22 only, however can be easily extended for other refrigerants such as R407C and R410A just by adding property modules. The compressor simulation module utilizes performance maps supplied by manufacturers-map-based model. The condenser and evaporator simulation modules are modeled using tube-by-tube method. Simulation results(capacity and power consumption) were compared with calorimeter test results of actual air-conditioners of window and split types, where more than 82% of the data lied within ${\pm}5$% of the predicted results.
Fin-tube type(Fin-type) heat exchanger has been tested in order to replace the heat exchanger of parallel flow type(P.F -type) which is now widly used in automobile air conditioning system The following conclusions are drawn by the comparison of the characteristics of the heat exchangers. Evaporator and condenser capacities and COP(Coefficience of performance) were varied as with the compressor speed, outdoor air temperature and air flow rate changed, which much influenced on the characteristics of the air conditioning system Evaporator and condenser capacities were increased with increasing compressor speed and outdoor air temperature. Evaporator and condenser pressures of Fin-type were decreased by 7% and 5% respectively compared with those of P.F-type. The COP of Fin-type was decreased with increasing outdoor air temperature and compressor speed. The COP of P.F-type was decreased by 14% compared with that of Fin-type.
A study on passive cooling systems for concrete containment of advanced pressurized water reactors has been performed. The proposed passive containment cooling system (PCCS) consist of (1) condenser units located inside containment, (2) a steam condensing pool outside containment at higher elevation, and (3) downcommer/riser piping systems which provide coolant flow paths. During an accident causing high containment pressure and temperature, the steam/air mixture in containment is condensed on the outer surface of condenser tubes transferring the heat to coolant flowing inside tubes. The coolant transfers the heat to the steam condensing pool via natural circulation due to density difference. This PCCS has the following characteristic: (1) applicable to concrete containment system, (2) no limitation in plant capacity expansion, (3) efficient steam condensing mechanism (dropwise or film condensation at the surface of condenser tube), and (4) utilization of a fully passive mechanism. A preliminary conceptual design work has been done based on steady-state assumptions to determine important design parameter including the elevation of components and required heat transfer area of the condenser tube. Assuming a decay power level of 2%, the required heat transfer area for 1,000MWe plant is assessed to be about 2,000 ㎡ (equivalent to 1,600 of 10 m-long, 4-cm-OD tubes) with the relative elevation difference of 38 m between the condenser and steam condensing pool and the riser diameter of 0.62 m.
Constant area expansion devices such as capillary tubes, short tube orifices are being gradually replaced with electronic expansion valves (EEVs) because of increasing focus on comfort and energy conservation. In this study, the performance of a water-to-water heat pump as a function of refrigerant charge is investigated in steady state, cooling mode operation with expansion devices of a capillary tube and an EEV. The performance of the capillary tube system varies drastically according to the change of refrigerant charge amount and inlet temperature of the secondary fluid in the condenser. Cooling capacity and COP of the EEV system show little dependence on the refrigerant charge, while those are strongly dependent on the secondary fluid temperature at the condenser inlet. In general, for a wide range of operating conditions the EEV system shows much higher performance as compared with the capillary tube system. The performance of the EEV system can be optimized by adjusting EEV opening to maintain a constant superheat at all test conditions.
The condensation heat transfer coefficients of pure refrigerants R-22, R-134a, and a binary refrigerant mixture R-410A flowing in a small diameter tube were investigated. The experiment apparatus consists of a refrigerant loop and a water loop. The main components of the refrigerant loop consist of a variable-speed pump, a mass flowmeter, an evaporator, and a condenser(test section). The water loop consists of a variable-speed pump, an isothermal tank, and a flowmeter. The condenser is a counterflow heat exchanger with refrigerant flowing in the inner tube and water flowing in the annulus. The test section consists of smooth, horizontal copper tube of 3.38mm outer diameter and 1.77mm inner diameter. The length of test section is 1220mm. The refrigerant mass fluxes varied from 450 to 1050kg/(㎡$.$s) and the average inlet and outlet qualities were 0.05 and 0.95, respectively. The main results were summarized as follows ; in the case of single-phase flow, the heat transfer coefficients increase with increasing mass flux. The heat transfer coefficient of R-410A was higher than that of R-22 and R-134a, and the heat transfer for small diameter tubes were about 20% to 27% higher than those predicted by Gnielinski. In the case of two-phase flow, the heat transfer coefficients also increase with increasing mass flux and quality. The condensation heat transfer coefficient of R-410A was slightly higher than that of R-22 and R-134a. Most of correlations proposed in the large diameter tube showed significant deviations with experimental data except for the ranges of low quality and low mass flux.
