The use of high-strength steel and concrete in the construction industry has been gaining increasing attention over the past few decades. With it comes the need to utilise high-strength structural bolts to ensure the design load to be transferred safely through joint regions, where the space is limited due to the reduced structural dimensions. However, research on the behaviour of high-strength structural bolts under various loading combinations is still insufficient. Most of the current design specifications concerning high-strength structural bolts were established based on a very limited set of experimental results. Moreover, as experimental programs normally include limited design parameters for investigation, finite element analysis has become one of the effective methods to assist the understanding of the behaviour of structural components. An accurate and simple full-range stress-strain model for high-strength structural bolts under different loading combinations was therefore developed, where the effects of bolt fracture was included. The ultimate strength capacities of various structural bolts obtained from the present experimental program were compared with the existing design provisions. Furthermore, design recommendations concerning the pure shear and tension, as well as combined shear and tension resistance of Grade 10.9 high-strength structural bolts were provided.
This paper firstly developed a new type of Double Skin Composite (DSC) beams using novel enhanced C-channels (ECs). The shear behaviour of novel ECs was firstly studied through two push-out tests. Eleven full-scale DSC beams with ECs (DSCB-ECs) were tested under four-point loading to study their ultimate strength behaviours, and the studied parameters were thickness of steel faceplate, spacing of ECs, shear span, and strength of concrete core. Test results showed that all the DSCB-ECs failed in flexure-governed mode, which confirmed the effective bonding of ECs. The working mechanisms of DSCB-ECs with different parameters were reported, analysed and discussed. The load-deflection (or strain) behaviour of DSCB-ECs were also detailed reported. The effects of studied parameters on ultimate strength behaviour of DSCB-ECs have been discussed and analysed. Including the experimental studies, this paper also developed theoretical models to predict the initial stiffness, elastic stiffness, cracking, yielding, and ultimate loads of DSCB-ECs. Validations of predictions against 11 test results proved the reasonable estimations of the developed theoretical models on those stiffness and strength indexes. Finally, conclusions were given based on these tests and analysis.
This paper aims to study the behavior of short reinforced concrete columns confined with external glass Fiber Reinforced Polymers (GFRP) sheets under eccentric loads. The experimental part of the study was achieved by testing 9 specimens under eccentric compression. Three eccentricity ratios corresponding to e/t = 0, 0.10, 0.50 in one direction of the column were used. Specimens were divided into three groups. The first group was the control one without confinement. The second group was fully wrapped with GFRP laminates before loading. The third group was wrapped under loading after reaching 75% of failure loads of the control specimens. The third group was investigated in order to represent the practical case of strengthening a loaded column with FRP laminates. All specimens were loaded until failure. The results show that GFRP laminates enhances both failure load and ductility response of eccentrically loaded column. Moreover, the study also illustrates the effect of confinement on the first crack load, lateral deformation, strain in reinforcement and failure pattern. Based on the analysis of the experimental results, a simple model has been proposed to predict the improvement of load carrying capacity under different eccentricity ratios. The predicted equation takes into consideration the eccentricity to cross section depth ratio, the ultimate strength of GFRP, the thickness of wrapping laminate, and the time of wrapping (before loading and under loading). A good correlation was obtained between experimental and analytical results.
In this research, bending analysis of a micro sandwich skew plate with isotropic core and piezoelectric composite face sheets reinforced by carbon nanotube on the elastic foundations are studied. The classical plate theory (CPT) are used to model micro sandwich skew plate and to apply size dependent effects based on modified strain gradient theory. Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka approach is considered for the effective mechanical properties of the nanocomposite face sheets. The governing equations of equilibrium are derived using minimum principle of total potential energy and then solved by extended Kantorovich method (EKM). The effects of width to thickness ratio and length to width of the sandwich plate, core-to-face sheet thickness ratio, the material length scale parameters, volume fraction of CNT, the angle of skew plate, different boundary conditions and types of cores on the deflection of micro sandwich skew plate are investigated. One of the most important results is the reduction of the deflection by increasing the angle of the micro sandwich skew plate and decreasing the deflection by decreasing the thickness of the structural core. The results of this research can be used in modern construction in the form of reinforced slabs or stiffened plates and also used in construction of bridges, the wing of airplane.
This paper aims to verify the feasibility of rubber rings to mitigate the shear concentration in perfobond connector (PBL) groups. Firstly, modified push-out tests for five specimens with four holes were conducted to investigate the effects of rubber rings on the shear mechanism of PBL groups. The test results showed that by employing rubber rings on partial holes, more shear forces were distributed to the holes without rubber rings. The rubber rings significantly improved the slip ability of the specimens, and the ductility of PBL groups is dependent on the number and thickness of rubber rings. Subsequently, three-dimensional numerical models were established and validated by the experimental results. According to the plastic strain distribution in concrete dowels, the action principle of rubber rings in PBL groups was explained. Furthermore, the parametric study was conducted to investigate the influential factors on shear distributions, including the width of steel plates, the hole spacing, the number of holes, the rubber ring thickness, and the positions of rubber rings. The parametric analysis results showed that the redistribution of shear forces is significantly affected by the rubber rings with the smallest thickness. By properly employing rubber rings in PBL groups, the shear forces of holes are more even. Finally, an analytical model for PBL groups with rubber rings was proposed to predict the shear distribution at the serviceability stage.

Buried box culverts are crucial elements of transportation infrastructure. However, their behavior under foundation loads is not well understood, indicating a significant gap in existing research. This study aims to bridge this gap by conducting a detailed numerical analysis using the Finite Element Method and Abaqus software. The research evaluates the behavior of buried box culverts by examining their interaction with surrounding soil and the pressures from surface foundation loads. Key variables such as embedment depth, culvert wall thickness, concrete material properties, foundation pressure, foundation width, soil elastic modulus, and friction angle are altered to understand their combined effects on structural response. The methodology employs a validated 2D numerical model under plane strain conditions. Parametric studies highlight the critical role of culvert depth (H) in influencing earth pressure and bending moments. Foundation pressure and width demonstrate complex interdependencies affecting culvert behavior. Variations in culvert materials' elastic modulus show minimal impact. It was found that the lower wall of the buried culvert experiences higher average pressure compared to the other two walls, due to the combined effects of the culvert's weight and down drag forces on the side walls. Furthermore, while the pressure distribution on the top and bottom walls is parabolic, the pressure on the side walls follows a different pattern, differing from that of the other two walls.

Recently, thermal bridge breaker systems(TBBSs) applicable to RC slab-wall connections have been increasingly studied and proposed. This study also aims at proposing an analytic model which is applicable to predicting the flexural behavior of TBBS embedded in slabs from the initial elastic stages, yield states to ultimate conditions. The analytic models are developed by considering strain compatibility, force equilibrium and the constitutive law obtained from material test results. To verify the accuracy of the proposed analytic model, the moment-curvature relationship and change of neutral axis according to the loading states are compared with those of experimental results. Based on the comparison, it is verified that the proposed analytic model provides well predict the flexural behavior of TBBS embedded in slabs.

A moment-curvature relationship to simulate the behavior of reinforced concrete beam under cyclic loading is introduced. Unlike previous moment-curvature models and the layered section approach, the proposed model takes into consideration the bond-slip effect by using monotonic moment-curvature relationship constructed on the basis of the bond-slip relation and corresponding equilibrium equation at each nodal point. In addition, the use of curved unloading and reloading branches inferred from the stress-strain relation of steel gives more exact numerical result. The advantages of the proposed model, comparing to layered section approach, may be on the reduction in calculation time and memory space in case of its application to large structures. The modification of the moment-curvature relation to reflect the fixed-end rotation and pinching effect is also introduced. Finally, correlation studies between analytical results and experimental studies are conducted to establish the validity of the proposed model.

In this study, small scaled (1/30) laboratory chamber tests of the pile foundation for a lightweight concrete pavement system were carried out to evaluate the safety of a pile foundation on sandy soil. The testing ground was simulated in the field and a standard pile-loading test was conducted. The test piles were divided into 3 types, Cases A, B and C, which is the location from the center of the slab by applying a vertical load. The interval between the piles was set to 8 cm. As a result of the pile foundation model test, the pavement settled when the vertical load was increased to 12kg from 1.5kg in sandy soil ground, particularly the maximum settlement of 0.04mm. Judging from the model chamber test, Case A showed compressive deformation, whereas Case B represented the compression and tensile forces with increasing vertical load. Case C showed an increase in tensile strain.

Since clear span-to-depth ratio is used to define what is so called a deep beam, it is an important parameter ratio for study about deep beam. Deep beams can be designed by flexure design method, and shear provided by concrete ($v_c$) and by steel ($v_s$) for deep flexure members are provided in ACI 318-99 [1]. But in later version of ACI (from ACI 318-02) it is not provided and deep beams shall be designed either by taking into account nonlinear distribution of strain or by Appendix A of Strut-and-Tie Models (STM). The trend of deep beam design seems to be familiar with strut-and-tie model, but ACI traditional design is not forgotten. By comparing these two method, there should a point which definitely explain the different between the two methods. In this study, 68 samples result of steel, after reinforcement arrangement, are taken to be analyzed.
