The program which could determine cross-sectional dimension of the prestressed concrete box girder bridges at the stage of preliminary design was developed using the optimal technique in this study. It could minimize the cost required in the design of box girder bridges and the construction with the full staging method. Objective cost function consisted of six independent variables such as height of cross-section, jacking force and thickness of web and bottom flange. The SUMT(Sequntial Unconstrained minimization Technique) was used to solve the constrained nonlinear minimization optimal problem. Using the program developed in this study, optimum design was performed for existing bridges with one cell cross section of constant depth. The result verify the compatibility of the program.

Represtressed preflex beams do not allow tensile stress under service load by introducing additional prestressing at the lower concrete of beams. In this study, optimal design of represetressed preflex beams are numerically investigated. Design variables are dimension of plate girder. Object function is the total weight of plate girder. Constraints of the stress of plate girder and upper and lower concrete flange and lower and upper bounds on the design variables are imposed. Structural analysis is performed by D.A.R.P.(Design and Analysis of Represtressed Preflex beams). For numerical optimization, ADS(Garret N. Vanderplaats) program is used. From result of application examples, optimum designs of different cases are successfully obtained. The design program developed in this study seems efficient and robust for the optimization of represtressed preflex beams.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate bending performance of concrete filled soldier pile for temporary retaining wall. Structural performance tests were conducted on total number of four specimens. Each specimen had a unique characteristics with combination of the following variables, existence of reinforcing bar and locations of reinforcing steel plates. The results of this study were as follows; concrete filled steel tubes with being reinforced bar and flange rather than non-bar showed better performance. Higher yield, tensile strength and sufficient plastic strain were archived and maximum moment observed in experiments exceeded theoretical maximum moment in both allowable stress design and limit state design at all specimens.

The seismic performance of structural walls subjected to the cyclic lateral loads are influenced by various factors, like sectional shape, aspect ratio, reinforcement ratio, arrangement of reinforcement, and axial load ratio etc. In this research, reinforced concrete structural walls with the T-shaped cross section were selected. The seismic performance of T-shaped wall was affected by the many (actors because T-shaped wall is irregular wall composed to two rectangular walls. Especially the seismic performance of T-shaped wall varies with the flange condition and the various factors including the flange condition were determined. Therefore, the objective of this study is to understand the factors to improve seismic performance of RC T-shaded tv using sectional analysis.
The calculation of fire resistance for a composite structural element comprises the calculation of the temperature within its cross-section and of the load bearing capacity, considering the evolution of the steel and concrete mechanical properties, function of the temperature. The paper proposes a method to calculate the bending capacity under ISO fire, for Slim Floor systems using asymmetric steel beams, with a wider lower flange or a narrow upper flange welded onto a half hot-rolled profile. The temperatures in the cross-section are evaluated by means of empirical formulas determined through a parametrical analysis, performed with the special purpose non-linear finite element program SAFIR. Considering these formulas, the bending capacity may be calculated, using an analytical approach to determine the plastic bending moment, for different fire resistance demands. The results obtained with this simplified method are validated through numerical analysis.

Many bridges are subject to lateral damage for their girders due to impact by over-height vehicles collision. In this study, the optimum configurations of carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) laminates were investigated to repair the laterally damaged prestressed concrete (PS) bridge girders. Experimental and analytical investigations were conducted to study the flexural behavior of 13 half-scale AASHTO type II PS girders under both static and fatigue loading. Lateral impact damage due to vehicle collision was simulated by sawing through the concrete of the bottom flange and slicing through one of the prestressing strands. The damaged concrete was repaired and CFRP systems (longitudinal soffit laminates and evenly spaced transverse U-wraps) were applied to restore the original flexural capacity and mitigate debonding of soffit CFRP longitudinal laminates. In addition to the static load tests for ten girders, three more girders were tested under fatigue loading cycles to investigate the behavior under simulated traffic conditions. Measurements of the applied load, the deflection at five different locations, strains along the cross-section height at mid-span, and multiple strains longitudinally along the bottom soffit were recorded. The study investigated and recommended the proper CFRP repair design in terms of the CFRP longitudinal layers and U-wrapping spacing to obtain flexural capacity improvement and desired failure modes for the repaired girders. Test results showed that with proper detailing, CFRP systems can be designed to restore the lost flexural capacity, sustain the fatigue load cycles, and maintain the desired failure mode.
In this study, the seismic performance of the connections between L-shaped columns composed of concrete-filled steel tubes (L-CFST columns) and H-beams used in high-rise steel frame structures was investigated. Seven full-scale specimens were tested under quasi-static cyclic loading. The variables studied in the tests included the joint type, the axial compression ratio, the presence of concrete, the width-to-thickness ratio and the internal extension length of the side plates. The hysteretic response, strength degradation, stiffness degradation, ductility, plastic rotation capacity, energy dissipation capacity and the strain distribution were evaluated at different load cycles. The test results indicated that both the corner and exterior joint specimens failed due to local buckling and crack within the beam flange adjacent to the end of the side plates. However, the failure modes of the interior joint specimens primarily included local buckling and crack at the end plates and curved corners of the beam flange. A design method was proposed for the flexural capacity of the end plate connection in the interior joint. Good agreement was observed between the theoretical and test results of both the yield and ultimate flexural capacity of the end plate connection.
T-shaped column is usually used as side column in buildings, which is one of the weak members in structural system. This paper presented a quasi-static cyclic loading experiment of six specimens of reinforced concrete (RC) T-shaped columns under compression-flexure-shear-torsion combined loadings to investigate the effect in the ratio of torsion to moment (T/M) and axial compression ratio (n) and height-thickness ratio of flange plate (φ) on their seismic performance. Based on the test results, the failure characteristics, hysteretic curves, ductility, energy dissipation, stiffness degradation and strength degradation were analyzed. The results show that the failure characteristics of RC T-shaped columns mainly depend on the ratio of torsion to moment, which can be divided into bending failure, bending-torsion failure and shear-torsion failure. With the increase of T/M ratio, the torsion ductility coefficient increased, and in a suitable range, the torsion and horizontal displacement ductility coefficient of RC T-shaped columns could be effectively improved with the increase of axial compression ratio and the decrease of height-thickness ratio of flange plate. Besides, the energy dissipation capacity of the specimens mainly depended on the bending and shear energy dissipation capacity. On the other hand, the increase of axial compression ratio and the ratio of torsion to moment could accelerate the torsional and bending stiffness degradation of RC T-shaped columns. Moreover, the degradation coefficient of torsion strength was between 0.80 and 0.98, and that of bending strength was between 0.75 and 1.00.
In this study, to investigate the seismic performance of beam-column joints using concrete-encased and -filled circular steel tube(CEFT) columns, two types of tests were performed: (1) column - flange tension test and (2) beam - column joint cyclic load test. In column - flange tension test, test parameters were concrete encasement and connection details: flange width and strengthening rebar. Five specimens were tested to investigate the load-carrying capacity and the failure mode. Test results showed that increase of flange width from 200mm to 350mm result in increase of connection strength and stiffness by 61% and 56%, respectively. Structural performances were further improved with addition of tensile rebars by 35% and 92%, respectively. In cyclic loading test, three exterior beam-column joints were prepared. Test parameters were strengthening details including additional tensile rebars, thickened steel tube, and vertical plate connection. In all joint specimens, flexural yielding of beam was occurred with limited damages in the connection regions. In particular, flexural capacity of beam-column joint was increased due to additional load transfer through tube - beam web connection. Also, connection details such as increase of tube thickness and using vertical plate connection were effective in improving the resistance of panel zone.
In the 1994 Northridge earthquake, connection damage initiated from the beam bottom flange was prevalent. The presence of a concrete slab and resulting composite action was speculated as one of the critical causes of the prevalent bottom flange fracture. In this study, four seismic retrofit schemes are proposed in order to salvage welded steel moment connections with composite floor slabs in existing steel moment frames. Because top flange modification of existing beams is not feasible due to the presence of a concrete floor slab, three schemes of bottom flange modification by using welded triangular or straight haunches or RBS(reduced beam section), and beam web strengthening by attaching heavy shear tab were cyclically tested and analyzed. Test results of this study show that haunch and web-strengthened specimens can eliminate the detrimental effect caused by composite action and ensure excellent connection plastic rotation exceeding 5% rad. Design recommendations for each retrofit scheme together with supplemental numerical studies are also presented.
