  • An experimental investigation was carried out on the strength and behavior plain and fiber reinforced geopolymer concrete beam column joints and the results were compared with plain and steel fiber reinforced conventional concrete beam column joints. The volume fraction of fibers used was 0.5%. A total of six Geopolymer concrete joints and four conventional concrete joints were cast and tested under reversed cyclic loading to evaluate the performance of the joints. First crack load, ultimate load, energy absorption capacity, energy dissipation capacity stiffness degradation and moment-curvature relation were evaluated from the test results. The comparison of test results revealed that the strength and behavior of plain and fiber reinforced geopolymer concrete beam column joints are marginally better than corresponding conventional concrete beam column joints.

  • In the case of nuclear power plants near end of their design life, a reassessment of the performance of safetyrelated equipment may be necessary to determine whether to shut down or extend the operation of the power plant. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the level of performance decline due to degradation. Electrical cabinets, including MCC and switchgear, are representative safety-related equipment. Several studies have assessed the degradation and seismic performance of nuclear power plant equipment. Most of those researches are limited to individual components due to the size of safety-related equipment and test equipment. However, only a few studies assessed the degradation performance of electrical cabinets. The equipment of various nuclear power plants is anchored to concrete foundations, and crack in concrete foundations is one of the most representative of degradation that could be visually confirmed. However, it is difficult to find a study for analysis through testing the effect of cracks in concrete foundations on the response of electrical cabinet internal equipment fixed by anchors. In this study, using a simple cabinet model considering cast-in-place anchor in uncracked and cracked concretes, a tri-axial shaking table tests were performed and the seismic behavior were observed.

  • Within the context of continuum mechanics, inelastic behaviours of constitutive responses are usually modelled by using phenomenological approaches. Elasto-plastic damage modelling is extensively used for concrete material in the case of progressive strength and stiffness deterioration. In this paper, a review of the main features of elasto-plastic damage modelling is presented for uniaxial stress-strain relationship. It has been reported in literature that the influence of Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) can lead to severe degradations in the modulus of elasticity and compression strength of the concrete material. In order to incorporate the effects of ASR related degradation, in this paper the constitutive model of concrete is based on the coupled damage-plasticity approach where degradation in concrete properties can be captured by adjusting the yield and damage criteria as well as the hardening moduli related parameters within the model. These parameters are adjusted according to results of concrete behaviour from the literature. The effect of ASR on the dynamic behaviour of a beam and a column are illustrated under moving load and cyclic load cases.

  • The prestressed concrete containment is one of the most important structures in nuclear power plants, which is required to prevent release of radioactive or hazardous effluents to the environment even in the case of a severe accident. Numerical analyses are carried out by using the ABAQUS finite element program to assess the ultimate pressure capacity of the Y prestressed concrete containment with light water reactor at design criteria condition and aging condition considering varied properties of time-dependant materials respectively. From the results, it is verified that the structural capacity of the Y prestressed concrete containment building under the present, aging condition is still robust. In addition, the parameter studies for the reduction of the ultimate pressure capacity of containment building according to the degradation levels of the main structural materials are carried out. The results show that when the degradations of each materials are considered as individual and combined forms, the influence is large in the order of tendon, rebar and concrete degradation, and tendon-rebar, tendon-concrete and rebar-concrete degradation respectively.

  • The purpose Performance degradation of concrete structures is generally caused by the deteriorations, such as surface collapse, pop-out, crack, and so on. It may result in serious defects of the concrete structures. Thus it is very important to detect and repair the defects of concrete structures within a proper time to assure the structural safety. However, the defects due to the deteriorations are usually difficult to find by visual inspection. A sensor is developed in this study, which may give early indications for degradation of concrete structures and show the locations of the demage. Cracks can be defected by the liquid in a small glass capsules which are embedded in the concrete structures. This paper discusses the applicability of that was developed smart concrete.

  • Concrete has been recognized as a material which is resistant to high temperatures, but chemicophysical property of concrete is changed by the high temperature. So, mechanical properties of concrete may be reduced. So, concrete at high temperature is evaluated mechanical properties for safety inspection. However, research of ultrasonic method is not much. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to NDT(non-destructive test) of 30, 70, 110MPa concrete exposed high temperature using ultrasonic pulse velocity.

  • The effects of three mechanisms, calcium depletion, sulphate and carbonate penetration, on the concrete degradation have been studied. The shrinking core model (SCM) and the HYDROGEOC. HEM (HGC) model have been applied to evaluate how fast the mechanisms proceed. The SCM is an analytical approximation model and the HGC is a numerical mass transport model coupled with chemical reaction. The SCM leads to more conservative results than the HGC, and turns out to be very useful in the viewpoint of simplicity and conservatism. During 300 years, calcium has been depleted within 10 cm from the concrete outer surface, and sulphate has penetrated less than 13.5 cm into the concrete. Carbonate has not penetrated own 7 cm into the concrete in contact with the bentonite, and, furthermore, its penetration into the concrete with the groundwater is negligible. Conclusively, the concrete is expected to maintain its integrity for at least 300 years that are regarded as institutional control period of intermediate and low-level radioactive waste repository.

  • Rebar corrosion in concrete is one of the main causes of reduction of service life of reinforced concrete buildings. This paper presents the influence of rebar corrosion on the structural behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings subjected to strong earthquake ground motion. Different levels of rebar corrosion scenarios were applied on a typical four story RC frame. The deteriorated conditions as a result of these scenarios include loss in cross-sectional area and loss of mechanical properties of the reinforcement bars, loss in bond strength, and loss in concrete strength and its modulus of elasticity. Dynamic analyses of the frame with different corrosion scenarios are performed with selected strong earthquake ground motion records. The influences of degradation in both concrete and reinforcement on structural behavior are investigated by comparing the various parameters of the frame under different corrosion scenarios with respect to each other. The results show that the progressive deterioration of the frame due to rebar corrosion causes serious structural behavior changes such as change in failure mode. The intensity, propagation time, and extensity of rebar corrosion have very important effects on the level of degradation of steel and concrete, as well as on the earthquake behavior of the structure.

  • In-service reinforced concrete structures are simultaneously subjected to a combination of multi-deterioration environmental actions and mechanical loads. The combination of two or more deteriorative actions in environments can potentially accelerate the degradation and aging of concrete materials and structures. This paper reviews the coupling and synergistic mechanisms among various deteriorative driving forces (e.g. chloride salts- and carbonation-induced reinforcement corrosion, cyclic freeze-thaw action, alkali-silica reaction, and sulfate attack). In addition, the effects of mechanical loads on detrimental environmental factors are discussed, focusing on the transport properties and damage evolution in concrete. Recommendations for advancing current testing methods and predictive modeling on assessing the long-term durability of concrete with consideration of the coupling effects are provided.
