Previous experimental researches indicate that reinforced concrete beam-column joints play an important role in the mechanical properties of moment resisting frame structures, so as to require proper design. In order to get better understanding of the beam-column joint performance, a rational model needs to be developed. Based on the former considerations, two typical models for calculating the shear carrying capacity of the beam-column joint including the inelastic reinforced concrete joint model and the softened strut-and-tie model are selected to be introduced and analyzed. After examining the applicability of two typical models mentioned earlier to interior beam-column joints, several adjustments are made to get better predicting of the test results. For the softened strut-and-tie model, four adjustments including modifications of the depth of the diagonal strut, the inclination angle of diagonal compression strut, the smeared stress of mild steel bars embedded in concrete, as well as the softening coefficient are made. While two adjustments for the inelastic reinforced concrete joint model including modifications of the confinement effect due to the column axial load and the correction coefficient for high concrete are made. It has been proved by test data that predicted results by the improved softened strut-and-tie model or the modified inelastic reinforced concrete joint model are consistent with the test data and conservative. Based on the test results, it is also not difficult to find that the improved beam-column joint model can be used to predict the joint carrying capacity and cracks development with sufficient accuracy.
In this study, experimental research was carried out to evaluate and improve the seismic performance of reinforced concrete beam-column joint regions using strengthening materials (steel plate, carbon fiber sheet, and embedded carbon fiber rod) in existing reinforced concrete buildings. Six specimens of retrofitted beam-column joints are constructed using various retrofitting materials and tested for their retrofit performances. Specimens designed by retrofitting the beam-column joint regions (LBCJ series) of existing reinforced concrete building showed a stable mode of failure and an increase in load-carrying capacity due to the effect of crack control at the time of initial loading and confinement from retrofitting materials during testing. Specimens of LBCJ series, designed by the retrofitting of FRP in reinforecd beam-column joint regions increased its maximum load carrying capacity by 26~50% and its energy dissipation capacity by 13.0~14.4% when compared to standard specimen of LBCJC with a displacement ductility of 4.

The seismic design of solid reinforced concrete bridge columns has been committed to, based on accumulated research and design specifications. The rational confinement model and seismic performance evaluation, however, are insufficient because of the lack of domestic and foreign design specifications about the experimental and analytical difficulties in the case of circular hollow reinforced concrete columns. In this paper, the seismic behavior of circular hollow reinforced concrete columns and its dependence on design variables are understood and explained. These research results can be used to derive the rational and economical design specifications for circular hollow sectional columns based on the result from the nonlinear analysis program, named RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology).
CFT column has excellent structural properties due to the composite action between concrete and steel tube. The bond behavior between the constituent elements has to be found for analyzing the behavior of CFT column. A new model is necessary because most of existing models for bond stress-slip relationship of the deformed bar cannot be applied to the CFT column. Therefore, the objective of this research is to develop a new model related to the bond behavior of CFT column considering the relation between bond stress and vertical stress, and the distribution of lateral stress under the confinement created by steel casing. From equilibrium condition, the formula for relationship between bond stress and vertical stress is derived, and the relationship for the lateral stresses of the CFT column section is obtained by an Airy stress function. The experiments are performed for five CFT column specimens axially loading on concrete alone. The relation between bond strength and lateral stress is investigated from the regression analysis using the measured strains. Finally a new bond strength model is proposed, which is able to predict the relationship for the stress of each direction of CFT column loading on concrete.

Constitutive modeling of constituent materials is very important for reinforced concrete (RC) frames. Cyclic constitutive behavior of unconfined concrete, confined concrete and reinforcing steel should be well defined in fiber-based discretization of RC sections. This study performs nonlinear dynamic analyses of RC frame structures to investigate the sensitivity of seismic behavior of such frames to different constitutive models of constituent materials. The study specifically attempts to examine confinement effects in concrete modeling and degrading effects in steel modeling, which substantially affects the monotonic, cyclic and seismic responses of RC members and frames. Based on the system level analysis, it is shown that the response of non-ductile frames is less sensitive to confined concrete models while the modeling of reinforcing steel is quite influential to the inelastic response of both non-ductile and ductile frames.
This research focused on analyzing the post-fire behavior of high-performance concrete-filled steel tube (CFST) columns, with the concrete containing tire rubber and steel fibers, under axial compressive loading. The finite element (FE) modeling of such heated columns containing recycled aggregate is a branch of this field which has not received the proper attention of researchers. Better understanding the post-fire behavior of these columns by measuring their residual strength and deformation is critical for achieving the minimum repair level required for structures damaged in the fire. Therefore, to develop this model, 19 groups of confined and unconfined specimens with the variables including the volume ratio of steel fibers, tire rubber content, diameter-to-thickness (D/t) ratio of the steel tube, and exposure temperature were considered. The ABAQUS software was employed to model the tested specimens so that the accurate behavior of the FE-modeled specimens could be examined under test conditions. To achieve desirable results for the modeling of the specimens, in addition to the novel procedure described in this research, the modified versions of models presented by previous researchers were also utilized. After the completion of modeling, the load-axial strain and load-lateral strain relationships, ultimate strength, and failure mode of the modeled CFST specimens were evaluated against the test data, through which the satisfactory accuracy of this modeling procedure was established. Afterward, using a parametric study, the effect of factors such as the concrete core strength at different temperatures and the D/t ratio on the behavior of the CFST columns was explored. Finally, the compressive strength values obtained from the FE model were compared with the corresponding values predicted by various codes, the results of which indicated that most codes were conservative in terms of these predictions.
In this study, cyclic loading tests were conducted to assess the seismic performance of cast-in-place (CIP) concrete-filled hollow core precast concrete columns (HPCC) constructed using steel ducts and rubber tubes. The outer shells of HPCC, with a hollow ratio of 47%, were fabricated using steel ducts and rubber tubes, respectively. Two combinations of shear studs & long threaded bars or cross-deformed bars & V-ties were employed to ensure the structural integrity of the old concrete (outer shell) and new CIP concrete. Up to a drift ratio of 3.8%, the hysteresis loop, yielding stiffness, dissipated energy, and equivalent damping ratio of the HPCC specimens were largely comparable to those of the solid columns. Besides the similarities in cyclic load-displacement responses, the strain history of the longitudinal bars and the transverse confinement of the three specimens also exhibited similar patterns. The measured maximum moment exceeded the predicted moment according to ACI 318 by more than 1.03 times. However, the load reduction of the HPCC specimen after reaching peak strength was marginally greater than that of the solid specimen. The energy dissipation and equivalent damping ratios of the HPCC specimens were 20% and 25% lower than those of the solid specimen, respectively. Taking into account the overall results, the structural behavior of HPCC specimens fabricated using steel ducts and rubber tubes is deemed comparable to that of solid columns. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the two combinations for securing structural integrity functioned as expected, and that rubber air-tubes can be effectively used to create well-shaped hollow sections.

Domestically developed concrete storage casks include an internal canister to maintain the confinement integrity of radio-active materials. In this study, we analyzed the depth of flaws caused by loads that propagate canister weld cracks under normal, off-normal and accident conditions, and evaluated the maximum allowable weld flaw depth needed to secure the structural integrity of the canister weld and to reduce the welding time of the internal canister lid of the concrete storage cask. Structural analyses for normal, off-normal and accident conditions were performed using the general-purpose finite element analysis program ABAQUS; the allowable flaw depth was assessed according to ASME B&PV Code Section XI. Evaluation results revealed an allowable canister weld flaw depth of 18.75 mm for the concrete storage cask, which satisfies the critical flaw depth recommended in NUREG-1536.

The hollow RC(Reinforced concrete) pier has the merit of lightweight pier compared with solid RC pier. However, the hollow RC pier shows a low ductile behavior due to brittle failure of inside concrete. To overcome this problem, the internally confined hollow reinforced concrete column has been developed. In this study, the behavior of internally confined hollow RC piers were evaluated with safety ratio, ductility, total material cost, the total weight of the pier, etc. The chosen parameters for the study are hollow ratio, thickness of internal steel tube, intervals between vertical re-bars, numbers of horizontal re-bars, and strength of concrete. As a result of parameters study, the usage of a minimum necessary thickness of the internal steel tube is the most effective.

As a part of a series of study, this study reviewed the fire proof characteristics of high performance concrete RC column members using non-stripping form that accompanied metal lath lateral confinement to prevent spalling of high performance concrete which is increasingly used recently, and the results are as follows. Flow and air amount both satisfied target range, and compressive strength, over 80MPa at age 28 days, showed high strength range. As for spalling characteristics, in the case of plain in which no fiber is mixed, severe spalling occurred, and in the case of 0.05% nylon("NY" hereinafter)+polypropylene("PP" hereinafter) fiber mixture, only surface area experienced partial spalling. Regarding non-stripping form changes, both non-stripping 25-20 and non-stripping 50-20 experienced spalling at finish material area, and non-stripping 50-20 showed better spalling proof performance than non-stripping 25-20. In the case of non-stripping 50-40, spalling was prevented, and while mass reduction rate was less than 10%, its temperature hysteresis showed the most excellent fire proof performance with base metal surface area maximum temperature $376.1^{\circ}C$.
