  • This study aimed to develop reference materials (RMs) for mortar that can simulate the initial flow characteristics with constant quality over a long period. Through the previous research on the development of RMs for cement paste, the combination of limestone, glycerol, and water was used as the basic matrix for developing RMs for mortar in this study. In addition, glass beads of three particle sizes (0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mm) and ISO standard sand were selected as tentative candidates to derive fine aggregate substitutes. The mixture of glass beads could simulate the initial flow characteristics of mortar, but under the same mixing ratio, replicates showed an unstable tendency to indicate inconsistent values due to the generation of electrostatic properties between materials and equipment. On the other hand, the mixture using ISO standard Sand not only simulates the constant flow characteristics for a long period of time, but also shows stable results with little error in replicates. Therefore, limestone, glycerol, ISO standard sand, and water were finally determined as components that met the required properties of RMs for mortar. The effect of each component on the flow characteristics of RMs was analyzed. It was found that glycerol increased the cohesion between the particles of standard sand, resulting in a constant increase both in the plastic viscosity and yield stress. Both limestone and standard sand had a dominant effect on the yield stress. The relationships between various mortar mixing ratios and the corresponding mixing ratios of RMs were established. In addition, the results of the verification experiment showed that the rheological properties of the RMs obtained through the relationships correlated with various water/cement ratios and the fine aggregate volume fractions of mortar obtained with same manner. In other words, the RMs for mortar developed in this study can be used as standard samples because they can simulate the initial flow characteristics of mortar of various mixing ratios for a long period without any chemical changes.

  • In this study, as part of a study to improve the self-healing performance of concrete structures by applying self-healing capsules made of cementitious materials to cement composite materials, the engineering characteristics of mortars according to PCC(Powder Compacted Capsule) size and mixing ratio were compared and analyzed. For this, fluidity, compressive strength, reload test, carbonation, ultrasonic velocity, and water permeability characteristics were measured according to PCC size and mixing ratio of mortar. As a result of the measurement, the fluidity and compressive strength increased as the mixing ratio of PCC increased, and in the case of the load reload test, the healing ratio increased as the mixing ratio of PCC increased in the 03PC formulation. In the case of water permeability test, it was found that when PCC was used, the reduction ratio of water flow was up to 35 % higher than that of Plain, and when PCC with a size of 0.3 to 0.6 mm was mixed with 15 %, it was found to be effective in improving the crack healing ratio of the mortar.

  • Steel corrosion in reinforced concrete (RC) structures is a critical problem to structural safety and many researches are being actively conducted on developing methods to maintain the required performance of the RC structures during their intended service lives. In this study, concrete mixture proportioning technique through genetic algorithm (GA) for RC structures under carbonation, which is considered to be serious in underground site and big cities, is investigated. For this, mixture proportions and diffusion coefficients of $CO_2$ from the previous researches were analyzed and fitness function for $CO_2$ diffusion coefficient was derived through regression analysis. This function based on the 12 experimental results consisted of 5 variables including water-cement ratio (W/C), cement content, sand percentage, coarse aggregate content per unit volume of concrete in unit, and relative humidity. Through genetic algorithm (GA) technique, simulated mixture proportions were proposed for 3 cases of verification and they showed reasonable results with less than relative error of 10%. Finally, assuming intended service life, different exposure conditions, design parameters, intended $CO_2$ diffusion coefficients, and cement contents were determined and related mixture proportions were simulated. This proposed technique is capable of suggesting reasonable mix proportions and can be modified based on experimental data which consider various mixing components like mineral admixtures.

  • This study focused on the field applicability evaluation of SB latex-modified concrete (LMC) for concrete bridge deck overlay using mobile mixer. The main experimental factors were water-cement ratio(31, 33, 35 37%), latex contents(0, 5, 10, 15, 20%), and fine aggregate ratio(55, 56, 57, 58%) in order to evaluate the workability, mechanical properties, and durability property of LMC. The slump loss, air content, compressive and flexible strength tests were used to evaluate LMC workability and strength properties. Also, the rapid chloride permeability test was used to evaluate the relative permeability of LMC. As a results, the LMC with enough workability and good quality was produced when it was mixed in field using mobile mixer, satisfying the target compressive strength and flexural strength. The required water-cement ratio of LMC for same workability when mixing with mobile mixer was less than that when mixing in laboratory. Increasing the amount of latex produced concrete with increased flexural strength by mobile mixer. The required cement-water ratios for same initial $19{\pm}3cm$ slump were 37% and 33% at laboratory and mobile mixer, respectively. The mobile mixer was accurately calibrated satisfying the required specification.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an impact crusher with a radial rotating plate installed at the bottom, which is a shock absorber that can produce high-quality recycled coarse aggregate for concrete and to verify the effect of improving the quality performance of recycled coarse aggregate and its applicability through concrete tests. As a result, it showed improved quality in all items such as absolute dry density, absorption rate, abrasion resistance, Particle shape judgment rate, amount lost in the 0.08 mm sieve passing test, alkali aggregate reaction, clay mass, stability, and impurity content, and it was found to meet the criteria of recycled aggregate quality standards. In addition, the air volume and slump of concrete to which recycled coarse aggregate is applied meet all domestic standards. According to the test results of the compressive strength characteristics by age of concrete according to the mixing ratio of the recycled coarse aggregate, it was confirmed that the mixing ratio of the recycled coarse aggregate was applicable up to 60 %.

  • This study intends to develop an eco-friendly concrete panel mixed with biochars. Experiments about mechanical and thermal properties were conducted on porous biochar concrete, which has insulation and carbon-capture performance. The concrete has a mixing ratio of 0, 5, 10, and 15 % for biochar and a water-binder ratio of 0.35. The unit weight, porosity, and permeability were measured to evaluate the mechanical characteristics. From the results, as the biochar mixing rate increased, the porosity and the permeability increased, but the unit weight decreased. Even though a decreased trend was observed in the compressive strength results, they satisfied the design standard. Since the thermal conductivity was decreased during the increase of contents, biochar could be considered an excellent material for insulation performance. In addition, regression analyses were conducted regarding the relationship of unit weight with porosity, compressive strength with thermal conductivity, and porous with thermal conductivity. From the regression, significant variables for expanding the scope of the application of biochar were presented.

  • The incorporation of non-biodegradable tyre waste in cement-based material has gained more interest towards sustainable construction these days. Crumb rubber (CR) from waste tyre is an alternative for sand replacement in low strength applications. Many researchers have studied CR cement-based materials produced by normal mixing (NM) method and reported a significant decrease in compressive strength due to CR. To compensate this strength loss, this research aims to study the innovative incorporation of CR in cement composite via the preplaced mixing (PM) method. In this investigation, cement composite was produced with NM and PM methods by replacing sand with 0%, 50%, and 100% CR by volume. The test results showed no significant difference in terms of densities of cement composite prepared with both mixing methods. However, cement composite prepared with PM method had lower strength reduction (about 10%) and lowered drying shrinkage (about 20%). In addition, the sound absorption coefficient and noise reduction coefficient of CR cement composite prepared by PM method were in similar range as those prepared with NM method. Overall, the results demonstrate that the PM method is promising, and the maximum replacement level of 50% is recommended for CR in the cement composite.

  • Water repellent and waterproofing agents fail to act work properly if cracks or detachment occurs outside. The method of making mortar was tested by classifying it into two methods: direct water-repellent put in concrete and water-repellent spray to sand method. It was found that the compressive strength was decreased as the amount of water repellent was increased. As a result of measuring the contact angle, all of the specimens were hydrophobic. The spray method showed greater water repellent effect than the direct mixing method.

  • This study has analyzed the engineering characteristics of resource-cycling mortar according to the variation of fine aggregate type using illite with high development potentials by setting the goal as developing eco-friendly construction materials. As a result, while flow has increased if recycled fine aggregate and waste refractory are used separately or mixing them adequately in case of flow and compressive strength, the flow had somewhat declined followed by illite replacement. However, the possibility of such usage is determined to be adequate if used by mixing illite, recycled fine aggregate and waste refractory properly due to the dry shrinkage effect.
